Author

Nadia Amoroso is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto. She has lectured at Harvard and Cornell universities, and is the author of The Exposed City: Mapping the Urban Invisibles.

Despite its importance to place-making, urban planning and the environment,

landscape design has often played an inferior role to architecture. Coinciding

with heightened social sensitivities, advances in material application,

data-driven mapping techniques and digital technologies and construction

methods, new practices in landscape design are producing a new wave

of work around the world. This overdue publication presents work by the

50 most innovative practices across the globe. From dedicated landscape

designers to architects turning their hand to the horizontal plane, an entirely

new language of design is reshaping our gardens, public squares, leisure

areas and business parks. A successor to Digital Architecture Now, this large-

format, highly visual publication is packed with inspirations and new spatial

ideas for a world of more beautifully designed outdoors.

Author

Kengo Kuma is the author of several books, including Anti-Object and Kyokai: A Japanese Technique for Articulating Space. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including XS Extreme (Thames & Hudson). Kenneth Frampton is the author of Modern Architecture and American Masterworks, both published by Thames & Hudson.

The quintessential Japanese architect of today, Kengo Kuma has forged a

modern design language that artfully combines the country’s traditional

building crafts with sophisticated technologies and materials. Combining

a deep understanding and respect for native construction techniques

with a more globalized outlook than many of his compatriots, Kuma’s

work represents a significant generational shift in a country rich with

contemporary architecture. From his iconic Glass House (1995) to Tokyo’s

Nezu Museum (2009), this is the complete record of Kuma’s built work,

comprising twenty-five projects to date.

In a lengthy essay, architectural historian Kenneth Frampton frames

Kuma’s work in the context of post-war Japan’s flourishing architecture

scene and influential figures, and recounts the international acclaim that

Kuma’s ideas and buildings have received. The heart of the book consists of

projects presented in detail, accompanied by descriptive text and detailed

drawings, and organized by the material themes that have come to define

the architect’s output.

Richard Powers’ previous books include Living Modern, Tropical Minimal and The Iconic House, all published by Thames & Hudson. Phyllis Richardson has published numerous books on lifestyle, interiors and building, including Living Modern, the XS series, Contemporary Natural, and the London and Paris volumes of the ‘StyleCity’ travel series.

Living Modern, published in 2010, remains the ultimate resource for

contemporary living. Defining the ‘modern’ space as much more than

‘modernist’, the book featured global interiors with clean lines, sophisticated

colour combinations, outdoor rooms, great design objects and open areas for

relaxing and eating. Featuring a new selection of photography and houses,

Living Modern Tropical applies these attributes to the lifestyles in tropical

climates, where the expression of modern living has found its natural home.

The book has a general introduction and ten sections, each with themed

subsections that focus on the attributes most enjoyed in tropical spaces.

Regardless of where you live, Living Modern Tropical offers hundreds of

Author

Emmanuel Ducamp is a specialist on 18th- and 19th-century Russian history. He contributed extensively to Great Private Collections of Imperial Russia, also published by Thames & Hudson. Marc Walter’s recent books include A Taste for the Exotic, Empire Style, The Great Family Houses of Europe and The World in 1900, all published by Thames & Hudson.

Situated just south of St Petersburg, the Russian imperial residence of

Tsarskoye Selo is now more than three hundred years old. Tsarskoye Selo –

the ‘Tsar’s Village’ – was once a modest estate housing a summer residence

for Catherine I, second wife of Peter the Great. The building now known

as the Catherine Palace was extensively rebuilt by Empress Elizabeth and

then lavishly refurbished by Catherine II, known as Catherine the Great.

This empress’s love of art and decoration is evident in the sumptuous

interiors and in the extensive park, filled with fanciful pavilions, bridges and

monuments. Catherine also commissioned the neoclassical Alexander Palace

for her favourite grandson, the future Alexander I; this later became home to

the last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family until their exile to Siberia.

Occupied by the Nazi forces in 1941, Tsarskoye Selo saw its treasures

plundered and many of its interiors left derelict. Fortunately, some of its

magnificent interiors survived the vicissitudes of history, while others, such

as the extravagant Amber Room, have since been painstakingly restored

to their former opulence. The estate is not only a piece of art history but a

living testimony to the tastes and private passions of the Romanov family.

Their clothes and porcelain, their desks and bookshelves build an intimate

and involving portrait of life in imperial Russia.
