The Architect/Engineer I role provides career tracks for  architects or  engineers whoseexpertise levels range from trainee to advanced level. Responsibilities include applyingarchitecture/engineering principles and practices to projects of varying complexity inspecialty areas. Specialty areas include those requiring knowledge of civil, environmental,

structural, mechanical, electrical, transportation, traffic, safety, materials, or rehabilitationengineering and architecture.

Architect/Engineer I

COMPLEXITY  Applies a broad and thorough knowledge of engineering or architectural principles, mathematics,physical and applied sciences, properties of materials,and fundamentals of design.Plans, designs and coordinates engineering projects of 

varying types and complexity.Drafts, designs, details and modifies engineering plans.Reviews materials prepared by privatearchitects/engineers for compliance with codes andpolicies to maximize the efficiency of each project. Applies knowledge of departmental programs, policiesand applicable state and federal regulations sufficient toimplement such and to represent such to publicofficials, the general public and the private sector. Applies knowledge of principles of project management

to administer projects/activities.Uses concepts and principles of negotiation to achieveprogram/project objectives. Advises internal and external contacts on engineeringor architectural design, development and agencystandards and projects. Applies knowledge of project scoping process andvalue engineering. Applies knowledge of project planning principles.Licensure as specified by the Code of Virginia.

This includes budgetary, planning,scheduling, public relations, human resource functions, and technical activities related to

Architecture/Engineering Manager II

The Architecture/Engineering Manager III role provides career tracks for managers whodirect the transportation engineering, construction, maintenance, administrative and other operations and programs of a defined geographic transportation district. This roleprovides career tracks for managers who serve as an assistant to the Commissioner for Transportation and direct the operations of divisions and/or districts in areas such asadministration, planning and operations. In addition, this role provides career tracks for 

executive level of Engineering and Buildings, and Facilities Management managers for the Commonwealth and for managers of an agency’s design and construction projects

ENGINEERING DESCRIPTORS

Chemical: Responsibilities include the design of chemical plant equipment and deviseprocesses for manufacturing chemicals and products, such as gasoline, synthetic rubber,plastics, and cements by applying principles and technology of chemistry, physics, andengineering.

Civil: Responsibilities include performing engineering duties in planning, designing, andoverseeing construction and maintenance of buildings, structures, and facilities, such as roads,

airports, bridges, harbors, power plants, water and sewage systems and waste disposal.

Electrical: Responsibilities include the design and review of electrical plans andspecifications and directing the installation, renovation, and maintenance of moderatelycomplex electrical systems and devices. Work activities include independently reviewingelectrical plans for new buildings and renovation work to ensure conformance withapplicable codes and regulations.

Environmental: Responsibilities include designing, planning, or performing engineering

duties in the avoidance, minimization, and mitigation of environmental hazards utilizingvarious engineering disciplines. Work may include waste treatment, site remediation or pollution control techniques, and the avoidance or minimization of adverse environmentalimpacts.

Materials: Responsibilities include the evaluation of engineering techniques, proceduresand criteria in relation to materials.

Mechanical: Responsibilities include the design and development of plans for mechanicalsystems such as heating and air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, special equipment,

and other related areas and the evaluation of field installations with possiblerecommendations for design modifications.
