Guardian Security Pipe Systems

IntroductionGuardian is a flush fitting architecturalfeature pipe in a wide range of shapes, providing a high level of security.

Guardian rainwater downpipe systemshave high impact resistance. The material hardness and fixingmechanisms give excellent rigidity. The systems and components howeverare not designed for use inunderground drainage or as part of a soil or waste system.

All Guardian extruded pipe systems areof 2.0mm thickness.

FeaturesGuardian comprises a range of sevenattractive extruded aluminium downpipeprofiles in 2 metre lengths, suppliedcomplete with unique fittings purposemade for each project specification.

■ Concealed jointing and fixing Inaccessible after assembly

■ Vandal resistant aluminium extrusion will not shatter or split

■ Wide range of colours with16 standard or specials on request

■ Smooth visual appearance No sockets or pipe clips

■ Non removable designPrevents theft by use of levers

■ Easy installation featuresFront fixing allows fitting intorecesses

■ Ground up installationFixing plates insert into top ofpipe section

Guardian has been specifically designedfor security conscious environments. It fits completely flush with the wall, and is therefore resistant to vandalismand completely ungrippable, whilst atthe same time integrating visually withthe total building design in a way notpreviously achieved by a rainwaterdownpipe system.

Guardian pipework may be used inconjunction with any gutter systemfrom the Contemporary range, and thisensures that there will always be acombination of gutter profile anddownpipe configuration to match the architectural requirementsof individual projects.

Systems are assembled from the groundupwards connecting to running outletswhich are manufactured on a projectby project basis to suit the combinationof gutter and downpipe section.

General Description

Performance

Structural and mechanical

Guardian is highly resistant to impactdamage, and capable of supportingladder weights.

ApprovalsAlumasc is approved to BS EN ISO 9001:1994 – Registration Nos Q 06401 and FM 35898.

Guardian rainwater downpipe systemsare extruded to BS EN 12020:2001,BS EN 515:1993, BS EN 573:1995 and BS EN 755, from grade 6063 T6 alloy, and are drift tested at works.

FinishGuardian can be supplied in plain finishor in polyester powder coatings toorder. These are powder coatings to BS 6496:1984 Specification for powderorganic coatings for application andstoving to aluminium alloy extrusions, sheet and preformed sections forexternal architectural purposes, andfor the finish on aluminium alloyextrusions, sheet and preformedsections coated with powder organiccoatings.

Alumasc holds BBA Certification No. 86/1671 for a range of polyestercolours applied to BBA approvedstandards.

Special colours with a BS or RALnumber can be supplied to customers’specification: consult AlumascTechnical Services for further details.

Coated Alumasc rainwater products are shrink wrapped in polythene priorto despatch.

Fire

Non-combustible to BS 476: Part 4:1970 (1984). Melting temperature foraluminium is approximately 660°C.

Chemical

Guardian is corrosion resistant butshould not be used in areas where acidsor detergents occur.

Biological

Guardian is vermin and rot proof.

Thermal

Guardian is designed to fullyaccommodate thermal movementat every joint.

Compatibility

Direct aluminium contact withdissimilar metals or with materialscontaining lime or cement should beavoided. The polyester coating is aninsulation, but a liberal coating ofbitumen will be an additional safetyfactor in these and marine situations.

The use of aluminium in conjunctionwith copper roofs, claddings orflashings should be avoided. ContactAlumasc Technical Services for advicewhere heavily polluted atmospheresare involved.

Durability

Guardian should have a lowmaintenance life in excess of 40 yearsin rural and suburban conditions, and in excess of 25 years in industrial andmarine conditions.

Exceptional Weather Conditions

Alumasc advise that the designer andcontractor satisfy themselves that theapplication is suitable. Extra fixings, brackets and snowboards should beconsidered where appropriate.

InstallationGuardian is a ‘Ground upwards’assembled security pipe system.

1 Tap both ‘fixing plates’ into the endof the pipe section using the fixingplate ‘insertion tool’ (Figure 1) or a hammer (use a block of wood orsuitable packing as a buffer toprevent damage to the aluminium).

2 Fix to the wall using No. 12 x 38mmtwin thread zinc plated pan headscrews through each plate (Figure 2).

3 Slide the next pipe section intoplace to mark holes, allowing 3-4mm gap for thermal movement.Drill and plug. Seal pipe junctionwith bead of low modulus siliconesealant around spigot and fix (Figure 3).

4 Continue to build the stack as above until a point is reached wherea connection must be madebetween the stack and the outlet, hopper or offset.

5 Where the gutter length containingthe outlet spigot can be positionedlast, build up the stack to therequired height (trimming thetopmost pipe section to the correct length) and secure topplates prior to placing and fixing the gutter outlet.

6 Where the gutter outlet is alreadyfixed, a telescopic section withcover piece must be usedimmediately beneath the offset, orwhere there is no offset, a straightmake up pipe of equivalent length. To allow for this, the topmost pipesection must stop 6/700mm short of the underside of the gutter. (Figure 4.)

7 After screw fixing the topmost pipe fixing plates, insert thetelescopic section.

8 Lift the telescopic section toconnect with the spigot on theoffset or make up pipe.

9 Cut a cover piece to fit the gap and fix in place with adhesive. (Figure 4.)

Note: Drain adaptors may be required. Please consult Alumasc Technical Services.

The Alumasc RainwaterDrainage Design ServiceAlumasc Technical Services can calculatethe most appropriate system of guttersand downpipes for all of the rainwatersystems that are offered.

Using dedicated design software inconjunction with the requirements of BSEN 12056:2000: Gravity drainage systemsinside buildings – Part 3 calculation of themost efficient drainage set up takes intoconsideration the following criteria:

■ Catchment area

■ Local rainfall intensity

■ Building life and safety factor

■ Size and flow rate of gutters

■ Frequency and size of outlets anddownpipes

The gutter flow software, used byAlumasc automatically checks thecapacity of downpipes used and suggeststhe minimum size to which down pipescan be sized.

Specification and Colour

ColoursAll Alumasc aluminium rainwaterproducts can be supplied in plain finishor in the Raincote range of factoryapplied polyester powder coatings.

The standard range comprises the 16 colours illustrated below, chosen to complement both traditional andcontemporary building styles andmaterials. Other colours with a BS orRAL number can be supplied to specialorder. Consult Alumasc TechnicalServices for further details.

Raincote complies with BS 6496: 1984Specification for powder organiccoatings for application and stoving toaluminium alloy extrusions, sheet andpreformed sections for externalarchitectural purposes, and for finishon aluminium alloy extrusions, sheetand preformed sections coated withpowder organic coatings.

The aluminium undergoes a series ofpre-treatments to provide the perfectlyprepared surface to receive an electro-statically applied polyester powder inthe chosen colour. This is then ‘baked’and bonded to the fitting in a carefullycontrolled oven; the complete processis achieved on a continuous line toobtain the best results. Alumasc holdsBritish Board of Agrément CertificationNo. 86/1671 for a range of polyestercolours applied to BBA approvedstandard. The performance greatlyexceeds that of site painting.

Polyester powder coating in accordancewith BS 6496:1984 refers to thecovering of ‘significant’ surfaces. In thecase of rainwater systems this isaccepted to mean surfaces visible fromground level. Alumasc systems willcertainly be finished to this standard, and will in most cases exceed it.

Delivery

Alumasc factory finished rainwaterproducts are shrink wrapped inpolythene prior to dispatch.
