Summer Prayer

As we begin the summer months, gracious and

loving Jesus, remind us of Your ever present

guidance and love.

Give us confidence in Your presence, remembering

all that we have and let us live it in our summer

experiences.

As we work, play and enjoy our family and friends

this summer, may we feel Your love within us,

guiding us toward all that is right and just.

Let us be grateful for the gift of summer, Jesus.

Allow us to enjoy it safely and remind us daily of

Your love for us.

Amen.

What a Difference a Dress (or suit) Can Make!

The Office of Development and Stewardship organized the second

annual collection for Communion dresses and suits to help families in

need in our four counties. Over 400 dresses and 220 suits were

donated and distributed to children throughout the Archdiocese in

time for their First Holy Communion. Sixteen parishes participated

by organizing a collection and “Little Nikki’s,” located in Ho-Ho-Kus,

donated a dozen brand new dresses and purses. We also receive

several monetary donations to purchase outfits for the children which

made it possible to purchase dresses in specific sizes and several pairs

of shoes.

Communications were sent to all parishes and schools informing them

of the communion outfit drive. A BIG thank you to Msgr. Richard Gronchi, Rev. John

McCrone and Rev. Leo Butler who delivered the outfits that were collected at their parishes!

Archdiocesan employee Meg Dean helped by volunteering to pick up dresses and suits at

various parishes. Judy Nitkowski, also an Archdiocesan employee organized a drive at her

parish and the Rosary Society bought many of the new veils. A special thank you to Kevin

Comp, Director of Facility Operations/Security for helping our department deliver some of the

outfits. It was team work that made this project a success.

This year I was moved to tears by a mom that requested an outfit for

her child. She is battling cancer and her husband recently had a heart

attack. Thanks to all the donations we received I was able to deliver an

outfit. I was even able to purchase a new pair of shoes for her child,

thanks to the monetary donations. When I told her we had the size

she needed for her child she replied, “You are my life saver”. I told her

I’m just the delivery person….and the thanks belong to all the parishes

that organized a collection and all the parishioners that donated a new

or used outfit and sent in monetary donations. It truly is team work.

It’s amazing what happens when people come together.

Sister Josefa Gonzalez, Director of Catechesis at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

sent a letter thanking us for the beautiful First Communion outfits for girls and boys. Part of

the letter read, “We really appreciate your willingness to help our community children. The

parents are very grateful.”

Reverend Aro Nathan, Pastor of Saints Joseph & Michael Church, sent a thank you letter.

Part of his letter read, “Your gift tells me that you recognize the role of each person in the

evangelization and life of our diocese. Your generosity insures that the people of our parish

and diocese will continue to receive spiritual, educational, and social services from the Church.

Thank you in hearing, responding, and ensuring the ministries of our Church continue on.”

A lovely thank you card was received from a mom thanking us for the communion dress. Her

hand written note said, “Thank you so much. Because of you my daughter will look like a

princess to receive the KING. I received the dress through Sister Josefa.”

I hope that after reading this you will feel the joy that they experienced and know that

together we are doing God’s work. If not us, then who? Thank you for making a difference!!!

Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal

Springtime is always a very joyous time within the Catholic Church. In

addition to celebrating the wonderful joy of the Easter Season, our local

church, The Archdiocese of Newark, has been blessed with a very fruitful

spring season.

This May, the Archdiocese of Newark welcomed nine newly ordained Transitional Deacons and

twelve newly ordained Priests. Ordinations took place at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred

Heart.

Our local Archdiocese is given new life with each new Deacon and Priest we are able to welcome

into the Archdiocese of Newark, and it is your prayers and support that help encourage more and

more vocations. While many dioceses in the United States have no candidates for the priesthood

and clergy shortages are widespread, the Archdiocese of Newark is blessed with several men

each year who are willing to answer God’s call to serve, insuring that the Church will be present

for future generations. In fact, in several recent years, the Archdiocese of Newark has ordained

more priests than any diocese in the United States.

A portion of the funds collected by the Annual Appeal supports seminary training and formation

of our new priests. Your support of the Annual Appeal continues to directly fund the three semi-

naries maintained by the Archdiocese to educate and train future priests. We are truly blessed

with a large number of men studying to be our future leaders.

@NwkArchdiocese!

Thank you for continuing to support these important programs and ministries, especially our

our seminaries. Please continue to pray for all of the seminarians, the newly Ordained Deacons,

and our newly ordained Priests. Thank you for your support of the Annual Appeal which

makes this all a reality!

We are Living Stones Capital Campaign

We Are Living Stones will allow each of us to join our gifts

with those who made the parishes and programs of this

Archdiocese a reality in years past and will ensure that we

remain a strong, vibrant and faithful Church in the years to

come. We know that our greatest strength is our Catholic

faith and the faith of our people. This campaign is centered

primarily on the spiritual growth and development of our

people’s faith. We are relying on your generosity to create a

legacy for this generation -- a legacy of faith that will pass on

to those who will cherish and take it into a new time, gratefully adding their own gifts to what

you have so generously given.

Case for Support

The We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign will provide the solid foundation upon which our

Church will continue to build and enhance the future for all one million Catholics across North-

ern New Jersey. Financial resources are essential to enable our parishes to continue supporting

the journey of faith, spirituality and ministry of our expanding Catholic community.

The goal is to raise more than $90 million in pledges to support six priorities:

As we embark on the We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign, we look forward to the future,

confident that all of our Brothers and Sisters of Christ will consider a sacrificial gift and join to-

gether to raise the important funds.

Strong Futures Program Strong Futures is a supportive housing program located in Union City. It provides services to young men ages

16-21 who are aging out of the child welfare system or are homeless. Eligible youth lack family resources and

are in need of transitional housing services. The youth must have the commitment and abilities to prepare for

independent living and self-sufficiency. Strong Futures aims to provide the support and skills that each young

person needs to make a successful transition to adulthood.

A few months ago the Office of

reached out to the Camden,

They were interested in the outfits.

I had an opportunity to meet the do-

that the outfits will be used to help

families in need and that some of the

outfits will be helping “our neigh-

Legacy Society Prayer Service and Tea By: Theresa Lynch—Planned Giving Manager

On Tuesday, March 24, 2015, the

Planned Giving Department at the

Archdiocese of Newark held their

annual Legacy Society Prayer Ser-

vice and Tea to recognize a special

group of friends who have remem-

bered their parish or the Archdiocese

of Newark in their estate plans.

More than 40 guests attended this

year’s event with Most Reverend Ma-

nuel A. Cruz presiding over the pray-

er service and tea. We were also

blessed with the presence of Most

Reverend Bernard A. Hebda and

Reverend Monsignor Thomas

Nydegger.

Each member of the Legacy Society was presented with a certificate. All new members

received a certificate, recognition pin and commemorative medal. It was an honor to host

the Legacy Society members. It is our way of thanking parishioners for remembering their

parish, Church of Newark and the many programs they support throughout the Archdio-

cese. It is a great way to thank donors now because their gift truly makes an impact on

future generations. A growing number of parishioners have made planned gifts in support

of the many services and programs of the Archdiocese. Many of these gift opportunities,

such as a charitable gift annuity, which provides a lifetime payments in exchange for a

charitable gift, offer significant financial benefits and tax savings not available with other

forms of financial planning. If you are interested in joining the Legacy Society or would

like more information, please do not hesitate to contact Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving

Manager, at (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected]. You can also contact Lynn

Gully at (973) 497-4589 or by e-mail at [email protected].

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the

one who was speaking say to me, ‘Son of man, I am sending you…’” (EZEKIEL 2:2-3)

God asks each of us to do some special work for Him. He gives us the resources we need to do

His work. However, do we listen to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and give our

talent to do the work He asks of us? Remember, God doesn’t call the equipped, he equips the

called.

July 12, 2015

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick – no food, no

sack, no money in their belts.” (MARK 6:8)

How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God.

Today, we make our journey through life more difficult because of all the material baggage that

we drag along. Yet, the more we can let go of, the freer we are to serve God with love and joy.

July 19, 2015

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“…come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile.” (Mark 6:31)

Do you spend time listening for God? Most of the time, He speaks in soft whispers. Open your

heart and hear the Lord. Take time in silence everyday and ask God what it is He wants you to

do. Consider making a retreat this year.

July 26, 2015

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these

for so many?” (JOHN 6:9)

The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes is the only miracle which is recorded six times in the Gos-

pel. It carries two important messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have

enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we

are just willing to let Him.

“Each day the people are to go out and gather their

daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they

follow my instructions or not.” (EXODUS 16:4)

When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of

manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same

way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and

to be willing to share the rest.

August 9, 2015

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” (1 KINGS 19:7)

Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be difficult, so He gave us the nourishment of

the Eucharist. When we take time to join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find

the strength to give and joy in our giving.

August 16, 2015

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise…” (EPHESIANS 5:15)

A wise person recognizes that all we have comes from God. A wise person thanks God every

day for all His many blessings. A wise person realizes that God has blessed us for a reason

and He wants us to be partners with Him in His work here on earth.

August 23, 2015

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve…As for

me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (JOSHUA 24:15)

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the

Lord. A partner is a person who invests their time, talent and treasure. If we say we serve

God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it!

August 30, 2015

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Be doers of the word and not hearers only…” (JAMES 1:22)

What do you do to live God’s word? Do you share your time in prayer with God? Do you use

your talent to help those in need? Are you generous with your financial resources? If not,

what are you waiting for?

September 6, 2015

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich

in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who

love him?” (JAMES 2:5)

What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that

possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith we

know that material things really do not matter and we are more willing to share what we

have.

September 13, 2015

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow

me.” (MARK 8:34)

When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being re-sponsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well.

September 20, 2015

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of

all.” (MARK 9:35)

Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many

people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. Howev-

er, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and

“facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service

of God.

September 27, 2015

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I

say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” (MARK 9:41)

Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We tend to

forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you look at others, do

you see the face of Jesus in them?

bras “sacer” = sagrado y “facere” = hacer. En otras palabras, hacemos nuestras vidas santas

compartiendo nuestros dones al servicio de Dios.

“Y cualquiera que os diere un vaso de agua en mi nombre, porque sois de Cristo, de cierto os

digo que no perderá su recompensa.” (MARCOS 9:41)

¿Refleja tu vida la vida de Jesús? Recuerda, fuimos hechos a Su imagen. Tendemos a olvidar-

nos de ésto. ¿Cuando otros te ven, ven el rostro de Jesús? ¿Cuando miras a otros, ves el rostro

de Jesús en ellos?
