OCEANICCONTROVERSIESStudentsjoiningthisstudioshouldhaveaninterestinsocialchange,architecturalandpoliticaltheory,andadesiretotranslatethisintodesign.Thisstudiooperatesasakindofmini-thesisprojectinwhichstudentswillbesupportedinlearningtodeveloparesearchinquiry,aprojectbrief,apoliticalintentandadesignproposition.Wewillforegroundamassiveandcomplexissueofconcern—theurbanproblemofsealevelrisecausedbyclimatechange—andhelpstudentstoorientthemselveswithinthisfieldbyconsideringideasfromcontemporarytheoristsandarchitectstobetterformulatehowarchitecturemightparticipateinsocialissues.Thisisabroad(ratherthandeep)studiointhatitwillquicklycoverawiderangeofskills:Research:Howdowemakealargeandcomplexresearchtopicmanageable?Design:Howdoweconnectdesignpracticesacrossscales(trans-scalarity)toissueswe’reinterestedinorareconcernedabout?Communications:Whatisitthatarchitectsandarchitecturalpropositionsactuallydointheworld,andhowdowedesignfortheseperformativeeffects?

Wewillapplythisapproachtotheproblemofsealevelrise(SLR)asitactsonadiverserangeofsitesinAuckland.IncoastalcitiestheissueofSLRwillalmostcertainlybecomeoneofthemajorchallengesforarchitectsandurbandesignersasbuildings,infrastructureandecosystemsareincreasinglyfloodedbytheocean.However,thisisn’tjustatechnicalproblemtobesolvedbyexperts;itissociallycontroversialwithavarietyofcontestorybeliefsandarguments.Forinstance:willSLRactuallyoccurand,ifso,howmuch?;whoistoblame?;whowillbeaffected?;isthisaproblemforgovernments,corporationsorprivateindividualstofix?;shouldwefocusonadaptationormitigationstrategies?;shouldweproceedquicklyorcautiously?;shouldcitiesretreat,defendorfloat?;whoshouldbeallowedtoparticipateinthesedebates?Therearemanymorequestionswecouldalsoask—noneofwhichhavestraightforwardanswers.Whattheyhighlightisthedeepuncertaintiesatthecoreofthisissue.Thisiswhatacontroversylookslike:adynamicandcontestedsitewherepeoplecometogether,oftenthroughdisagreement.Herewecanwitnessandparticipateinthevariousways–architectureisone-thesocialworldisconstructed.FollowingtheoristslikeBrunoLatour,IsabelleStengersandJaneBennett,whoincludenon-humanentitiesasactiveparticipantsinsocialcollectives,wewilltestarchitectureasatypeofsocialconnectorthatcangiveavoicetotheoceanasaparticipantinthecontroversyofSLRinAuckland.Wewillthusfocusourarchitecturalskillsanddevicesonadeceptivelysimplequestion:whatsocialrelationshipshouldwehavewiththeoceanintheeraofclimatechange?Iftheeraofmodernityhastreatedthethresholdbetweenoceanandcityasasitetobeexploitedforleisure,privilege,circulationorshipping,whatarchitecturemightbeappropriatefortheocean’sedgeinaneraofclimatechange?And,asweexplorethesequestionsandpositionourselvesinrelationtothiscontroversy,howcanwe,asarchitects,haveaninfluence?

TOPICSTRUCTUREANDCONTENT

Thisstudioisstructuredbythreeinquiriesthatactasascaffoldsupportingstudentstolearnhowtodeveloptheirownresearchanddesigntrajectories.Studentswillbeencouragedtotakeownershipoverthisstructurewiththetutoractingprimarilyasaneventmanagerkeepingthingsrunningsmoothly.Inquiry1focusesonresearchandorientation;Inquiry2ondesigning;and,Inquiry3ontheoreticalfundamentals.Inquiry1:ResearchingSLRinAucklandThestudiowilloperateasaresearchlabexploringthedynamicsocialconstructionofSLRasanurbancontroversyconnectedtospecificsitesinAuckland.Inquiry1willarticulateasocio-materialassemblageintowhichInquiry2willbeembedded.In‘sitegroups’of3-4,studentswillselectaspecificsitewithaspecificspatialproblematicthatwillformthebasisfortheirresearchandindividualdesignproposition.Siteoptionswillbesuppliedonceconfirmed.

Tocreateaclassdatabaseofsharedresearchinformationwewillbeginbyworkingfortwoweeksinverticalresearchgroups(1studentfromeachgroupabove)toexploreSLRatdifferentscales:

Ateachofthesescalesresearchgroupswillneedtoask:

-Whoarethekeyhumanandnonhumanactors?-WhateffectswillSLRhave?-Whatactorsarenotabletoparticipateinthecontroversy?-Whatarethepotentialdesignopportunitiesforarchitects?

Oncethisinformationiscompiled,studentswillworkintheirsitegroupstosynthesisethistothespecificsoftheirdesignsite.Eachgroupwillproducea3-4minutefilmthatwillbescreenedpriortotheirindividualdesignpresentationsandsummarisetheirsiteproblematicintonarrativeform.

Inquiry2:DesigningoceanicarchitecturalpropositionsThroughthreestageseachstudentwillindividuallydesignaninventivearchitecturalpropositionthatexplorestheimplicationsofthequestion:whatsocialrelationshipshouldwehavewiththeoceanintheeraofclimatechange?

2a:MaterialinventionsThefirststageofdesignwillbetodevelopamaterialartefactthatcreatesaspatialandaestheticrelationshipbetweenhumansandtheocean.Startingpointscouldbeideasofretreat,resistance,flotation,submersion,caring,repairing,utilisingandsoon.Thesecouldbeconceivedasarchitecturaldetailsorobject-design.Wewillconceptualisethisobjectasbeinganonhumanentitythathasaparticulartypeofpoliticalinfluenceontheworld.Theonlyrulesare:

-youwillhavetophysicallyexperimentwithmaterials-buildtheobject,orapieceofit,at1:1-fullyintegratetheobjectintoyourarchitecturalpropositionanddemonstrateitsperformanceatreviews

2b:SpatialinventionsConnectingthesmallscaleof2atothelargescale,thissecondstagewillbethedesignofanarchitecturalpropositionthatrespondstothespecificSLRproblematicofyourchosensite.Questioningthecertaintyandauthorityofa‘masterordirectionalplan,’wewillcollectivelyexplorewaystorepresentandchoreographthetemporality,materialityandspatialityacrossarangeofscales(thedetail,building,site,urbanandplanetaryscales).Eachstudentwillproducearchitecturaldrawingsandmodelsthatoperateinatrans-scalarwayandshowhowsmallthings,likeanarchitecturaldetailorspatialmoment,areconnectedtobigthingsliketheglobalproblemofSLR.Briefspecificswillberefinedonanindividualbasisinconversationwithyourtutor.2c:CommunicativeinventionsWorkingfromthepremisethatarchitectureissocial,eachstudentwillbeaskedtoquestionthepoliticalneutralityofstandardpin-ups.Howdoarchitectspersuadeothers?Howdoarchitectsencouragedebateorcontroversy?Howdoarchitectsantagoniseopponents?Howdoarchitectscommunicatetransparentlyoropaquely?Whatrolecandrawings,modelsandotherarchitecturaldevicesplayinsocial
