Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, A Martyr The Salvador-ean Archbishop, +Oscar Romero came a step closer to canoni-zation the First week of January when a panel of theologians at the Vatican declared that he was assassinated “in hatred of the faith.” The decision from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints means that the Archbishop of San Salvador, who was shot at the altar in 1980 during Mass, can officially be consid-ered a martyr. A group of cardinals and then Pope Francis will now ratify the decision. Pope Francis could possibly “raise +Archbishop Romero to the altars” as soon as this March on the anniversary of the assassination of the Salvadorean Archbishop, March 24th or on August 16th which would have been his 100th birthday. Many in the Church are grateful for the election, presence and environment created by Pope Francis which has made the long awaited canonization of Archbishop Romero possible. Shortly after the assassination of Archbishop Romero, Pope John Paul II went to El Salvador and prayed at the tomb of the slain Archbishop. Many noted that nothing more of the Archbishop was mentioned by the pontiff during that papal visitation or during the papacy of Benedict XVI. It is believed that Archbishop Romero will be referred to as Saint Oscar Romero of the Americas. “Con Monseñor Romero Dios Pasó Por El Salvador” Quote by Father Ignacio Ellacuría, SJ, President of the (Catholic) University of Central America. Father Ellacuría himself would be assassinated, martyred by the Salvadorean military along with other Jesuits, Fathers Ignacio Martín-Baró, Segundo Mon-tes, Juan Moreno, Joaquín López y López, Armando López , their housekeeper, Elba Ramos and her 15 year old daughter Celina Ramos, at the University of Central America twenty five years ago on 16 November 1989. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus spends the Sabbath at Capernaum with his first disciples. There he manifests his extraordi-nary authority as much by his teaching as by heal-ing the possessed and sick. Thus, from the very beginning of his ministry, his fame spreads through Galilee. After Easter this region will be-come the point of origin for the Church’s universal mission. In today’s gospel Jesus goes to the synagogue and teaches there. After the scribe’s catechesis on the law, Jesus no doubt reads a prophetic text and gives the homily as he did at Nazareth (Luke 4:16). He provokes wonder and astonishment in his hear-ers. Unlike the scribes, who were anxious to ex-plain the letter of the Law on the basis of commen-taries received from their masters. Jesus speaks from his own authority. He confirms that authority when he heals the man with an unclean spirit. That healing gives rise to the question, “Who is this man?” Many are uneasy with such healing miracles. Medicine and depth psychology seem to reduce to a purely natural pathology what antiquity attrib-uted to the supernatural world. Yet many scien-tists recognize that there is more to the human than the eye can see. Thus we should not fall into the trap of a new reductionism by having recourse exclusively to the empirical sciences. Like the peo-ple in Capernaum, we who live in a technological age must confront the same question, “Who is this man?”

The Dominican Laity A group of lay Catholics who make a formal

commitment to live out the Dominican charism of prayer, study, community, ministry, and preaching,

has found a new home. We will now meet at St. Therese Catholic Church, 3424 Fourth Street NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107. We meet on the first Sat-
