First Iteration

OBJECTIVE

§  This is an exercise to warm up the creativities of the students and all of us need to think about the iteration based on individual personalities.

§  The primary focus of this iteration is the curvilinear shape which emphasizes on the meaning of moving carefully.

§  The secondary fact is the unique and supportive forms that make the whole iteration to stand well by making the triangular shaped spaces.

§  The tertiary focus is the emotionally stable. The quality of being able to place in every position portrays the stability.

REFLECTION

The focus of this iteration is to portray the movement, supportive and stable concepts by combining the curvilinear and rectilinear shapes. The movement of cardboard and the absent of base fulfill the requirement datum of this iteration.

Second Iteration

Second Iteration

OBJECTIVE

§  The purpose of the second iteration is to continue the development of the first iteration by identifying the critique of the previous one.

§  This iteration emphasizes (the primary focus) to demonstrate the parabola shape by putting the woods together carefully.

§  The secondary focus is to identify the rectilinear shapes that connect and make unity between the three parabola shapes.

§  The tertiary form is the square shaped cardboards which make contract between two colors and make the repetition and rhythmic composition between each other.

REFLECTION

The idea of this iteration is to focus the same idea of the first iteration and make more complexities in compositions of the design process. I attempt to create the main idea of carefully moving and unity of the whole abstract model. However, I abandon my first iteration in terms of shape because I use curvilinear shape in my first iteration. I need to maintain the shape in my third iteration.

Third Iteration

Third Iteration

OBJECTIVE

•  The third iteration is to continue developing correlation between the qualities and understanding design language based on the strength and weakness of the last two iterations and introduce the usage of kit of parts.

•  The iteration focus on the varying sizes of curvilinear, rectilinear and parabola forms which make the iteration to be rhythmic and repetitive actions while representing the movement.

REFLECTION

In this iteration, I specify to show the movement by using the wavy pattern cardboard and making the curvilinear shape. I also try to play with the spaces in this iteration by covering the gap with blue cross pattern sheets. This iteration promotes the way of using kit of parts and I figure out the advantages of using them. I can imagine the possible shapes through kit of parts which is awesome.

Fourth Iteration

Fourth Iteration

OBJECTIVE •  To make an iteration which is related to the previous three iterations and try

to make a written narrative by expressing the ideas and qualities. •  The design process bases on the same concept of moving carefully along

the wavy journey. WRITTEN NARRATIVE AND REFLECTION When it comes along with the curvilinear shape, it supports the feeling of complexity at the middle part of the composition where two curvilinear parts meet. The wavy shape cardboard adds more complexity from one point. Besides, the overall expression based on the texture that gives the contract feeling of complexity and smoothness. The core of the composition supports the whole model to define the spaces between each other. Like in the society, we, humans, need to support each other to get a stronger and more beautiful world. By this way we can observe better surroundings from obstacles of our lives. While designing this iteration, my intention is to establish the idea of complexity movement and I wonder how I can make the model to get the gap between each other. I find out that I need the supporting part in the middle of my composition. However, I am not satisfied with my final result because I feel like it lacks the enough complexities compared to my third iteration even though I create the same idea of movements in my iteration.

Proportional Study (Golden Section Ratio)

Proportional Study (Golden Section)

OBJECTIVE

•  Studying the proportional scales such as the Golden Ratio, Fibonacci Series, Harmonic proportions and Modular proportions to perform the nature’s beauty.

REFLECTION

After demonstrating with a lot of curvilinear forms in my first four iterations, I try to establish the rectilinear shape as the primary part. However, the dominant one is the curvilinear shape which gives the information of golden nature ratio. The drawing is clearly based on the golden section and makes some push/pull to preform the complexity and rhythmic to response the nature. In this golden section ratio, the height of the middle part is the same as the largest part of the proportion which means they are related to each other. It demonstrates the development of the design process that responds to the nature.

Shapes of Space

Shapes of Space

OBJECTIVE

To create the interesting composition by following the matrix which gives the possible generic options together with human figure scale.

REFLECTION

In this study, I try to generate the possible composition options based on the matrix I created. According to the matrix, I find out 20 possible compositions that can establish the interesting spaces. From this studying, I have learned how spaces are important when we dwell a building. After studying these possibilities, I try to create a composition by putting together the U shaped sticks and I find out its attractive. However it only includes the primary aspects and I need to work on complexity.

Welcoming and comfortable Awesome and monumental Intimate and tranquil OBJECTIVE To create a 3D composition journey experiences which establish the qualities of i.  Welcoming and comfortable ii.  Awesome and monumental iii.  Intimate and tranquil by using Sketch Up and designing a physical model. REFLECTION Based on the study of genetic spatial compositions, I develop my 3D composition which is emphasized on welcoming, monumental and intimate spaces. For welcoming space, I use the stair case which will lead to the entrance of the monumental part and dome shaped roof to give the feeling of comfortable. For the monumental part, I make two high walls that lead your eyes to the sky and make you feel freedom. The intimate section comes after monumental composition. For the intimate composition, I use semi circle that make you feel warm and peaceful while looking at the surrounding of the building.

Truth, Nature and Frames + Surfaces

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the design consisting of frame and surfaces to response the site (landscape).

REFLECTION

After I finish doing my landscape, I think how should I respond it with my building. I intentionally try my columns to be back slope to respond my landscape’s wavy shape. I also establish the hierarchical of line weight and try to make the space composition called spaces within the space. The weakness I have to improve is that to make the columns to the opposite directions and make the V- shape. If so, the building will be more balance on its position.

Conclusion

Overall, I learned a lot form this first half of the semester. Even though I abandoned my first

iteration, I got the precious feedbacks from my instructor and colleagues for my second iteration. With those

valuable feedbacks, I did the third iteration by using the similar shape of the first iteration. Besides, I learned

how to make the models hierarchically. By this way, I represented the frame exercises that response the

landscape, very well according to the primary, secondary and tertiary. I extremely appreciate to have such a

supportive instructor and colleagues. Without them, I can't go that far in my design studio class and I am excited

to start our second half of the semester with big, big project.

Thank You!!
