1.0 Background
1.1 Central Sussex College instructed John Cooban CMLI M.Arbor.A to
undertake a tree survey and report in connection with proposed development of land in the southern part of Crawley Campus, College Road, Crawley, RH10 1NR. The tree survey fieldwork was carried out on 20 March 2012.
1.2 The Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS) together with the Tree Protection Plan (TPP) are the final part of the design phase of the overall process described in BS 5837:2005 Trees in relation to construction – Recommendations. The AMS report follows on from the Tree Survey Report and Tree Constraints Plan (TCP), and an arboricultural implications assessment of the client’s development proposals.
1.3 The Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS) incorporating the Tree Protection Plan (TPP) is the documentation which in its final form is intended for submission to discharge a Planning Condition, which is then implemented through inclusion in demolition / construction main contract documentation, and subject to enforcement action by the Local Planning Authority if necessary. The rationale behind construction site tree protection is the probability that accidental or unwitting damage to retained trees or their rooting areas will occur unless measures are designed and put in place physically to prevent or reduce it to acceptable levels.

2.0 Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS)
2.1 The AMS follows the recommendations of Section 7 of BS
5837:2005 Trees in relation to construction - Recommendations.
2.2 A Tree Protection Plan has been prepared which shows the trees to be removed, retained and protected.
2.3 Appendix A: Tree Protection Schedule details the removal or protection measures applicable to each tree.
2.3 Appendix B: Arboricultural Operations Sequence outlines the programme for protection measures during the construction phases.
2.4 This AMS is a provisional draft in support of a planning application. A final version may be required to accommodate contractor facilities and detailed amendments for the purpose of discharging planning conditions.
3.0 Summary
3.1 All existing trees are shown as retained except for trees T44, T45 and T46 (all small recently planted Category ‘C’ trees) to be removed due to incompatibility with the layout.
3.2 A combination of contract specified working limits, vertical barriers and ground protection are the general methods to be used for root protection areas (RPAs), trunks and canopies of trees identified for retention.
3.3 An Arboricultural Association approved contractor will be employed for any necessary remedial treework.
3.4 An arboriculturist will monitor the protection scheme for compliance with this Method Statement throughout protection installation, demolition, construction and completion stages.

Its validity is limited to two years from this date, or any earlier event, occurrence or change that might affect tree condition. This report is solely for the purpose of guiding the client’s proposals for existing trees in relation to development. No liability shall be incurred in respect of its use for any other purpose.
