Notes

Restricted titles. Almost all pre-1950 Arabic newspapers held in hard copy only arenot available for use in the reading room because they are too fragile. This applies to newspapers with shelfmarks beginning OP. They are awaiting preservation microfilming. Holding details are for information only. Once these titles have been filmed, the microfilm number will be added to this list. Older newspapers with numeric shelfmarks beginning 145…. are available for use (they are bound).

Microfilm. Where we hold newspapers on microfilm you will not be able to order the hard copy for dates available on film. Use of the microfilm prevents further damage to the original hard copy.

Early newspapers. In addition to modern newspapers, this list includes most early journals which may be regarded as newspapers. Details of these are in the ‘Union catalogue of Arabic serials and newspapers in British Libraries’, in the Asian and African Studies Reading Room at OIE 011.34

Recent issues. We do not hold very recent issues of London-based newspapers as they are sent to us monthly rather than coming daily. Newspapers currently received on microfilm generally come between 12 months and 24 months after their publication date.
