III. METHOD SUMMARY

Metals

This is a procedure used to determine metals concentra-tions in aqueous matrices. It , involves an acidicdigestion under oxidizing conditions of approximately 25milliliters of sample. Nitric and hydrochloric acids aswell as hydrogen peroxide are employed in the digestion. The digested sample is filtered and diluted to 25milliliters. The analysis is performed by ICP andfurnace atomic absorption. Reference methods are 1988CLP Statement of Work for Inorganics and EPA Methods forthe Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes, Revised, March1983.

Cyanide

An aliquot of sample is acidified under analysis condi-tions liberating cyanide as HCN. A distillation followsleaving behind interferences and scrubbing the distilledHCN in sodium hydroxide solution. An aliquot of the NaOHsolution is analyzed colorimetrically for cyanide ion.Reference method is EPA Methods for the Chemical Analysisof Water and Wastes, Revised, March 1983, Method 335.2.

III. METHOD SUMMARY

Puraeables by GC/MS

EPA Method 624 - This is a purge and trap gas chromato-graph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) method. The organiccompounds are separated by the gas chromatograph anddetected using the mass spectrometer. Federal Register,Vol. 40, No. 136, July, 1988.

An HP5890/5970 GC/MS was used with a packed column of 1%SP-1000 on Carbopack B.

Method detection limits are as stated.

Semivolatiles by GC/MS

EPA Method 625 - This is a gas chromatograph/mass spec-trometer (GC/MS) method applicable to the determinationof a number of organic compounds that are partitioned inan organic solvent and amenable to gas chromatography.Federal Register, Vol. 40, No. 136, July, 1988.

An HP5890/5970B GC/MS was used with a Rtx-5 fused silicacapillary column.

Method detection limits are as stated.

III. METHOD SUMMARY (Continued)

Metals

This is a procedure used to determine metals concentra-tions in aqueous matrices. It involves an acidicdigestion under oxidizing conditions of approximately 25milliliters of sample.

Pesticides/PCB's

EPA Method 608 - This method covers the determination ofpesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) insamples by extraction/concentration with organic solventsand subsequent qualification/quantification by GasChromatography. The gas chromatograph utilizes anelectron capture detector (BCD) which is applicable forthe determination of the compounds listed for this methodin the U.S.E.P.A. Manual entitled "Methods for OrganicChemical Analysis of Municipal and IndustrialWastewater".
