Peo p le o f p re-Islam ic period , whilst b elieving in sup erstition , they still reta ined

som e o f the Abraha mic t rad itions suc h as devo tion to the Holy Sanc tua ry,

circumambulation, observance of pilgrimage, the vigil on ‘Arafah and

offering sacrifices, all of these were observed fully despite some innovations

that adulterated these holy rituals. Quraish, for example, out of arrogance,

feeling of superiority to other tribes and pride in their custodianship of the

Sac red House, would refrain from go ing to ‘ Arafah with the c row d , instea d

they w ould stop short at Muzda lifah. The Nob le Qur’ân reb uked and toldthem:

Another heresy, dee p ly estab lished in their soc ial trad ition, dicta ted tha t they

would not ea t dried yoghurt or coo ked fat, nor would they enter a tent ma de

of c ame l hair or seek shade unless in a house of a dob e b ricks, so long as they

were c om mitted to the intention o f pilgrima ge . They a lso, out o f a deep ly-

rooted misconception, denied pilgrims, other than Makkans, access to the

food they had brought when they wanted to make pilgrimage or lesser

pilgrimage.

They orde red p ilg rims c om ing from outside Makkah to c irc uma mb ulate Al-Ka‘bah in Quraish uniform clothes, but if they could not afford them, men

were to d o so in a sta te of nud ity, and w om en with only som e p iec e o f cloth

to hide the ir groins. Allâh says in this c onc ern:

"O Children of Adam! Take your ad ornment (by w ea ring your c lean c lothes),

while p raying [and g oing round (the Tawa f of) the Ka‘b ah]. [Al-Qur'an 7:31]

If men or women were generous enough to go round Al-Ka‘bah in their

c lothes, they had to d isc ard them after circ uma mb ulation for go od . [Bukhari

1/226; Ibn Hisha m 1/202]

When the Makkans were in a pilgrimage consecration state, they would not

ente r their houses through the doo rs but through ho les they used to d ig in thebac k wa lls. They used to regard suc h be haviour as dee ds of p iety and go d-

fea ring. This p rac tice wa s p rohibited by the Qur’â n:

"It is not Al-Birr  (piety, righteousness, etc.) that you enter the houses from the

back but Al-Birr  (is the quality of the one) who fears Allâh. So enter houses

through their proper doors, and fear Allâh that you may be successful." [Al-

Qur'an 2:189]

Suc h w as the religious life in Arab ia, polythe ism, idola try, and superstition.

Juda ism, Christianity, Magianism a nd Sab ianism, howe ver, c ould find the ir

ways easily into Arabia.
