Book Title _________________________________________________________________________________

Please follow the directions for completing this “characterbook” project. Understand that all parts must be

completed.

(1) Large Blank Box – Photo of Me

Draw a picture of the character of your choice. It doesn’t have to be the main character. As with the rest of this project,

color this illustration.

(2) People I Know

Draw four other characters from the story and provide their names on the lines below the pictures.

(3) Photos

Draw a picture that illustrates the setting of the story. Include a brief caption on the line below it describing the picture.

(4) Status

Choose a quotation (something your character said) from the book to post as her/his/its status.

(5) Basic and Personal Information

Use information from the book to complete this section. If the book doesn’t say exactly the character’s age or

hometown, make a best guess or use generic terms such as “Teenager” and “Small Town, USA”. Most often, though, the

book will reveal this information to some degree.

(6) Wall

Go back in the book and find two examples of other characters talking directly to your character. Write those

quotations here and be sure to include on what page number I can find the quote.

Literacy Terms Dictionary

Option A: Create a PowerPoint presentation that contains a slide for each of the literary terms listed here. On each slide

provide the definition and explain in detail how that literary element was evident in the novel. Include a photo or

illustration to help convey your thoughts. Terms: character, plot, setting, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action,

resolution, theme, conflict, symbol, point of view…and more if you’d like! Attach your file to an email sent to the

following address: [email protected]

Option B: If a computer isn’t handy you may create this dictionary using paper. Please ensure there is a front and back

cover for your dictionary. Turn this into the AR project box. The rest of the directions remain the same.

Example:

Although David struggled to forgive his

father for abandoning him at such a

young age, and although David didn’t

think his father necessarily deserved

forgiveness, doing so lifted a weight off

of his shoulders. He was able to move

on with life after bringing his painful

relationship with his father, or lack

thereof, to a close.

While there a few woven throughout the story, one certainly

serves as primary theme: the power of forgiveness.

Meaning, moral, lesson, or big idea of the story

New Book Cover with Book Review

New Book Cover: This activity will require that you consider the author’s purpose behind writing your selected book.

Beyond determining whether it was to entertain or something else, what do you suppose the author hoped the reader

would learn or take from reading the novel? Is there a theme, lesson, or moral? Or perhaps it was purely educational?

You decide. Then using the white paper provided create a new book cover which will best represent the author’s

purpose. For example, let’s say you read Everything on a Waffle and you decided the author hoped that readers would

learn how important keeping hope in your heart can be. The original book cover is below as well as an example of how

you might change it to reflect this lesson.

Things you must include:

 Title—in creative font

 Author—in creative font

Your first and last name on back

An illustration to support your idea

A phrase that you created that will help convey your

idea and encourage others to consider reading the book.

Other things to know:

 Full color

May be computer generated such as the example I did with Paintbrush

or done by hand (of course!)

Place in the AR basket when finished.

Book Review: The book review may be typed or handwritten in ink. This book review will not serve as an advertisement

for other readers but will instead help you analyze the book you read and help me assess your understanding of the

book. For that reason, feel free to discuss important points of the book, surprises, and even the ending. It will consist of

three paragraphs…see below.

Things you must include:

A paragraph summary of the book. Touch on the characters, the setting, the conflict, and the resolution.

Your reaction to and opinion of the book. Include at least one positive comment and one critique.

Questions you have about the book or the issues within the book. Can you make connections between the book

and you, others, the world?

Turn in both the book cover and review to the AR book at the same time.

as Paintbrush. Do so on three separate sheets of paper in full color. If you don’t have a color printer you can email your

Tic-Tac-Toe Assignment

Select three activities to complete in a winning tic-tac-toe configuration.

Name: _______________________________________________________________________________________

Book Title: ____________________________________________________________________________________

If the book you have just read

developed into a movie, what

songs would likely be part of the

soundtrack? Make a CD booklet

insert (with cover) listing the

songs, the artists, and a sentence

explanation for why the song was

chosen.

Create a timeline of events that took

place in your book. At least ten events

must be included on the timeline. You

may choose how to create the timeline.

Create an acrostic poem using the

name of the main character to

create your poem. Each letter is

used in the construction of phrases

or sentences that describe the

character.

Turn your book into a comic strip

consisting of at least nine

windows. Be creative and have

fun!

Either typed or handwritten in pen,

answer the following question in one

well thought out paragraph:

What life-long lesson can you take

away from the book?

Write a letter to the author of your

book. Your letter should both offer

praise and ask questions. Use

specific details in order to show the

author exactly what you’re talking

about…and to show me you read

the book. ;)

Make a colorful illustration of a

particularly memorable scene in

the story. Include a title and a

caption to describe your picture.

Then, on a separate sheet of

paper, in one paragraph explain

why you chose this scene. Be

specific.

Create a crossword puzzle based on the

story using at least ten names or terms

from the book. You must include a

separate answer key.

Create a trivia game using ten index

cards. Ask two of the following

types of questions for a total of

twelve. The answers must be on the

back in small print.

who, what, when, where,

why, and how

Podcast

You and a friend partner up to create a radio talk show of sorts that focuses on reading, books, authors, and

the like. Your friend will be the host of this show asking you questions about the book you have chosen. You

have freedom to go about this however you like as long as you abide by the guidelines provided below. For

example, you may pretend as though you’re the author. Or you may simply be someone on the show

critiquing the book. You can submit this in various formats…just see me for further instructions.

Note: If you are unable to convince a friend to help you with this, feel free to play both roles…which could

prove quite fun and entertaining. ☺

Ensure the audience knows by the end of the podcast the following:

 The name of your show

 The title of your book

 The author of your book

 AR level and point value

The genre of the book (fantasy, historical fiction, horror, etc.)

A general idea of the book’s plot

 Your opinion of the book

Ensure the audience does NOT know the following:

 The entire plot!

 The ending!

Enough to pass an AR test over the book!
