The conceptual content of the stained glass was developed emphasising light, colour and its symbolic significance.

The visual image was developed courtesy of a collaboration between artists and technical specialists.

The artist’s concept is manifested through the exposition of the idea which provides the foundation for the next stage of the project - the technical design, during the the course of the study of which, the most effective colours, technical options and technology will be precisely defined.

“Es, būdams tikai sešus gadus vecs, kopā ar vecākiem piedalījos 1991. gada janvāra Barikāžu dienu notikumos. Veidojot šo piemiņas zīmi man nav tiešu vizuālu atmiņu vai sajūtu par notikušo, tādēļ apzinos, cik svarīgi ir nostiprināt piemiņu, kas ir tik ļoti gaistoša un trausla. Skice, kas sākumā šķiet netverama un izplūdusi pārtop par kaut ko pastāvīgu un taustāmu - simbolu kolektīvai atmiņai.

Lai uzzinātu vairāk par Barikāžu dienu notikumiem, uzrunāju cilvēkus sev apkārt un sapratu, ka katram ir savas atmiņas un asociācijas - kāds uzsvēra kopības sajūtu, cits neziņu, vēl kāds sāka ar atmiņām par ugunskuriem un barikādēm, bet visus vienoja viens mērķis - degsme par brīvu Latviju, gaišas domas par nākotni un neapdzēšama cerība.”

Latvija is one of the Baltic States which are located in Northern Europe on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea.

In 1918, after the end of the First World War, Latvia declared itself to be an independent republic, but in 1940 the country was occupied by the Soviet Union.

Latvia restored her independence in 1990 by launching a peaceful opposition movement including the entire Latvian population.

This art work is a memorial tribute to the restoration of the independence of the Latvian State and people’s fervour for freedom.

“Although I was only a few years old at the time, together with my parents I was a witness to the events triggered by the opposition movement in 1991. In creating this memorial sign, I have no direct visual memories or feelings about these events, but realise how important it is to consoli-date memory, which is so very transient and fragile.

This sketch, which at first seems imperceptible and diffuse, evolves into something enduring and tangible for the collective memory of symbols.

To learn more about the opposition movement, I talked to the people around me and understood that everyone has their own memories and associations; one person em-phasised the feeling of togetherness, someone else mentioned uncertainty, while another person began with memories of the bonfires and barricades, but they were all united by one common denominator -fervour for a free Latvia, bright thoughts of the future and eternal hope.”

Jaunā vitrāža atradīsies Rīgas Domā, kas ir Rīgas slavenākais pilsētas simbols un kulta celtne, kuras pamatakmens likts 1211. gadā, pašā vecpilsētas sirdī.

Domam un Doma laukumam ir īpaša nozīme Latvijas valsts vēsturē. Doms ir bijis liecinieks kariem, politisko iekārtu maiņām, tostarp nearkarības iegūšanai un atjaunošanai.

Latvijas neatkarības aizstāvji 1991. gada Barikāžu laikā baznīcā rada ne vien garīgu, bet arī fizisku patvērumu.

Vitrāža raudzīsies tieši uz Doma laukumu, kas ir viens no nozīmīgākajiem publiskajiem laukumiem pilsētas centrā.

The new stained glass will be located in the Rīga Cathedral, which is Rīga’s most famous urban symbol and a cult building whose foundation stone was laid down in 1211 in the very heart of the old town.

The Cathedral and Dome Square are of particular importance in the history of the Latvian State. The Cathedral has borne witness to wars, changes in political apparatus, including the attainment and restoration of independence.

The opposition movement defending Latvia’s independence in 1991 creates not only a spiritual, but also a physical sanctuary.

The stained glass will have a direct view of Dome Square which is one of the most important public squares in the city centre.

Latvijas neatkarības atjaunošanas simbols atradīsies Marijas kapelas ziemeļu sienā ar skatu uz Doma laukumu.

Kapela celta ap 14. gs. un tagadējo izskatu ieguva 19. gs sākumā. Tā ir lūgšanu vieta Domā, kas bez ierobežojumiem pieejama apmeklētājiem arī starp dievkalpojumu laikiem.

Svētdienās 12:00 tiek atvērti vātri uz galveno zāli, lai nodrošinātu pieeju tur notiekošajam dievkalpojumam.

This symbol of the restoration of Latvian independence will be on the north wall of Marija’s Chapel with a view of Dome Square.

The chapel was built around the 14th century and obtained its current appearance at the start of the 19th century. It is the place of prayer in the Cathedral to which visitors also have unlimited access between church services.

At 12:00 on Sundays, the gates to the main hall are opened in order to ensure access to the church service taking place there.

The stained glass exists alongside living memories of past events with a bright view of the future. It is dedicated to the defenders of freedom and future generations of this free country.

Each stained glass window has a particular significance and symbolism, jointly forming a unified composition.

Katru reizi aplūkojot vitrāžu, gan no Doma ārpuses, gan no iekšpuses, cilvēks iegūst neatkārtojamu pārdzīvojumu, jo mainoties gaismas avota leņķim un intensitātei, piemēram, saules gaismai, mainās vitrāžas atstarotā gaisma un krāsa. Krāsu gammu ietekmē arī apkārt esošie apstākļi - mājas, cilvēku pārvietošanās, laikapstākļi u.c.

Tradicionālā izpratnē vitrāža netiek izkrāsota, bet krāsa pati par sevi ir tās neatņemama sastāvdaļa.

Vitrāža ir kā dimants - lai arī caurspīdīgs, tomēr ietver visu krāsu spektru, neizslēdzot un neuzsverot kādu kā galveno.

Each time you gaze at the stained glass from both outside and inside the Cathedral, you have an inimitable experience, because as the angle and intensity of the source of light change, for example, due to the sunlight; the light and colour reflected through the stained glass change. The colour gamma is also influenced by the surrounding circumstances - buildings, movement of people, and weather conditions, etc.

In the traditional sense, the stained glass is not coloured, but rather colour is an element of it in itself.

The stained glass is like a diamond - even though it is transparent, it nevertheless incorporates the whole spectrum of colours, excluding none, nor emphasising any colour as the main one.



Uguns liesma ir “dzīva” – tā ir nepārtrauktā kustībā, ko atspoguļo vitrāžas vizuālais mainīgums, radot spēcīgu gaismas noskaņu baznīcas iekšienē.

Liesmu ģeometrija veidota savienojot katru novadu ar Pirmo un Otro Neatkarību, Lieldienām, Ziemassvētkiem un Pilnību.

The flame of fire is “alive” – it is in perpetual movement which is reflected by the visual metamorphosis of the stained glass, creating a powerful atmosphere of light inside the church.

The geometry of the flames is formed connecting each region with the First and Second Eras of Independence, Easter, Christmas and the Whole.

Each person is like a star that lights up in the sky as part of the whole constellation.

Uniting every person who directly or indirectly participated in the establishment of the second era of independence and formation of contemporary Latvia, a visual code is formed alluding to the importance of each and every person in the unified whole, not differentiating people according to gender, nationality or other signs.

Katram vēsturiskajam novadam veltīts atsevišķs vitrāžas logs, kurā tiks attēlots konkrētā novada ģērbonis. Šie ģērboņi iestrādāti starp “liesmām”, kas iedegas atsevišķi un tajā pašā laikā veidojot vienotu liesmu.

An individual stained glass window depicting the relevant coat of arms has been dedicated to each region. These coats of arms are inserted between “flames” which ignite separately, at the same time forming a united flame.

Lode ir tīra un skaidra, bet vizuālo tēlu veido gaisma tās iekšpusē.

The Whole is the centre of the composition which the other symbols of the stained glass converge towards.

The orb is clean and clear, but the visual image is formed by the light on its inside.
