Aquaculture Online:Farming from your desktop
Dr Andrew Morgan and Amy Wilson,Bay of Plenty PolytechnicElaine Taylor, Seafood ITO
Initial Concept• To deliver aquaculture training and education
for industry online, by adapting face to face teaching…..
o Use of adult learning theoryo Use of e-learning structureo Creation of interactive learning
….while meeting the needs of industry, SITO
Audience participation• Discuss the following with those at your table:
– How is your institution/programme interacting with ITO(s)?
– What structure do you have in place?– What type of consultation occurs?
Concept Model
NZQA
Industry structure and needs• How is the industry structured?
• Hatchery• Production• Harvesting and Processing
• How do you deliver unit standards online but teach the learning material in a context relevant to industry?
ANSWER = SCENARIOS
The scenario
• Allows for:– problem solving environment to be created– unit standards to be matched against method
of teaching– adaptation of face to face course material to
online delivery– contextualisation of theory based learning and
its application in the production cycle
Integrating unit standards
Construction of Content• Creation of the aquaculture course
environment
• Mapping of NZQA aquaculture domain unit standards
• Framing of scenarios

Audience participation• Discuss the following with those at your table:
– How would you introduce this type of flexibility into your existing programme(s)?
– How far would you follow through a case study or scenario?
The online course• Organised in topic blocks• Activities for each scenarios• Learner support• Backed up by industry professionals
Programme Structure• The Polytechnic has developed its own
aquaculture online course• Industry employees enrol in the Polytechnic
course• Industry employees select the aquaculture
unit standards they need to be assessed against for the Level 4 National Certificate
Learning outcomes:• The student will be able to:
– Technical – recognise how aquaculture structures’ and their layout interact with the environment and impact on the species being farmed.
– Theoretical – interpret relevant information on farming a species and apply it in the production cycle.
– Analytical – develop and/or consistently use or improve on a structured system of protocols and methods to increase productivity.
– Informed judgement – confidently make informed choices that have a positive impact on aquaculture operations.
Conclusion• Leaders in industry training and education• Development of online learning and
innovative methods' of content delivery• Providing an industry centred focus while
maintaining academic standards• Unit standards are an assessment tool
Conclusions (continued)• Providing pathways and linkages to existing
unit standards based training and infrastructure
• Overall – using existing resources but develop new and innovative ways to deliver the learning material that reflects relevant issues and problems occurring within the industry
