EXCERPTED FROM DECLARATION OF PEDRO INTERVIEWING NARANJO
NARANJO OF THE QUERES NATION
Asked what causes or motives said Indian rebels had for renouncing the law of God and obedience to his Majesty, and committing such grave and atrocious crimes, [he answered] the causes they have were alleged ill treatment and injuries received from the Spanish, because they had beat them, took away what they had and made them work without pay.

PUEBLO (POPÉ’S) REVOLT
• Significance:• The only successful expulsion
of European settlers in the history of North America
• Pueblo Indians believed they had reestablished the freedom lost through Spanish conquest
• By 1692, the Spanish had reconquered New Mexico as the Pueblo alliance disintegrated• But Spain was more tolerant
towards traditional religion and made fewer labor demands
