RELIGIONS EFFECT ON THE COLONIES
Many of the earlier settlers sought religious freedom, the established beliefs and tolerance of the different areas in the colonies contributed to their long lasting growth and success, but ultimately their influence
New England Pennsylvania~ Founded by William Penn
as an experiment in liberal government styles
Open mindedness and advertising campaign attracted a wide range of settlers
Had a good relationship with Native Americans, many moved to PA as well as sold land to Penn
Quakers bought West New Jersey to expand because of growing population
New EnglandRhode Island~ Established by Baptist Roger
Williams, extended religious tolerance to everyone including Jews and Catholics
Expanded as small clusters of exiles flocked around Providence
Populated mostly by outcasts from the colonies not from Europe
Self sufficient and independent because few colonies were willing to work with RI
Chesapeake Bay
Massachusetts~ Non- Separatist Puritans obtain charter for
the infertile Massachusetts area in 1629 More turmoil in England resulted in more
settlers fleeing to Mass. For religious freedom John Winthrop, first governor, came to power
as a calling from God to lead the religious experiment
Shared sense of purpose resulted in prosperous land the Bay became one of the most influential outposts
Chesapeake Bay
Massachusetts~ Due to religious
stringency Mass. lost many of its citizens to more liberal states
Ann Hutchinson a radical female critic of the church was exiled to Rhode Island
Any other threats to the secular establishment were put on trial and banished to either other colonies or back to England
Chesapeake BayMaryland~ Established by Lord
Baltimore as financial endeavor and refuge for Catholics
Primarily awarded land to prominent Catholic familes
Offered very liberal religious tolerance
Influx of Protestants, becoming the majority, threatened Catholic freedom
Many rights denied to anyone denied Jesus’ existence
Flourished in tobacco farming and shipping
The South
North Carolina~ Result of rejects of gentrified Protestants
in Virgina Rebelled against the aristocracy of the
Church of England, similar to RI Did not have as affluent a slave trade as
other Southen colonies Incredibly successful outpost because of
their independence
The SouthGeorgia~ Relatively diverse,
Lutherans and Prtoestants have religious tolerance
Catholics and Jews denied this right
Comprised primarily of Native Americans and slaves missionaries often came to Georgia to convert
Contiual attacks from the French and Spanish resulted in slow growth, mostly ungentirifed citizens
