    BOARD OF DIRECTOR

Xizhen Huang, MD, Beijing, China, President

Dr. Huang Xi Zhen is a distinguished Professor of Medicine for Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) and Chief of Staff for the Peking Union Medical College

Hospital (PUMCH). She has long been recognized as the founder of Chinese sleep medicine.

Upon her graduation in 1957 from Hunan Xiangya Medical College she joined the staff of PUMCH when she has remained to this day. In 1979 she studied in Japan at

the 19th Session of the Pulmonary Function Research Group at the famous ToHoKu University. Her interest in sleep disorders grew out of her work in the pulmonary

medicine field where she confronted many patients suffering from breathing problems that seem to be associated with sleep.

In 1981 Dr. Huang diagnosed and treated her first obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patient. A solitary pioneer, she set up the first Chinese laboratory

dedicated to sleep-disordered breathing. As her work progressed, she realized she needed an international education in order to develop a world class practice and

    research facility in sleep medicine.

Thus in 1986 Dr. Huang arrived at the Stanford University Sleep Disorder Center in California. It was here that she met the world renowned father of international

sleep medicine, William Dement and was the first Chinese to study under him. In 1991 she furthered her studies at the Stanford University Sleep Disorder Center.

Mrs. Huang can be rightly called the Mother of Chinese sleep medicine. In her long and very productive career, she has trained over 2,000 doctors in sleep medicine

while treating some 20,000 patients. She has written over 100 academic papers, a number of which were published in international, peer reviewed publications. She

has also authored and co-authored a number of books on sleep disorders in China. She wrote the first popular book on sleep in China, Sleep Advice, which was a

best seller in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong with over 200,000 copies sold to date.

She has been chairman of the board of the Chinese Sleep Research Society for many years. She was a member of the science committee of the 5th and 7th sessions

of the World Sleep Breath Disorder conventions. She is the current chief editor of the journal of Chinese Sleep Medicine and chairman of Asian Pacific Sleep Society.

She became a member of the Program Committee for the World Association of Sleep Medicine Second World Congress in 2007.
