The Hard Slog
The island o Bougainville in the South Pacic was the site o one o thelargest and most gruelling campaigns ought by Australian orces duringthe Second World War. During the oensive against the Japanese romNovember 1944 to August 1945, more than 500 Australians were killedand two Victoria Crosses awarded. A veteran later described Bougainvilleas ‘one long bloody hard slog’. Despite this, little is known about thecampaign, which was dismissed as an unnecessary and costly operation.
