Dear Readers

With new life emerging everywhere around us this month let’s take as much pleasure as we can from the Spring weather and realise how lucky we are in this corner of the globe - especially given the recent dramatic events in Japan.

As we can only have an effect in a localised way to change the way we live for the better, and if you’re thinking of updating things at home, perhaps consider looking at the Surrey Reuse Network where you could find hidden treasures at a remarkably low price! We have more from Surrey Waste Partnership on Page 5.

If you have some spare time and would like to lend a hand locally, Hatchlands Park really need your help and have asked for volunteers to give talks, show visitors around and talk about the history of Hatchlands and help with on-going events.

If you have a budding musician in the family why not take them along to the splendid new event “Open Mic” on Sunday 10th April which showcases local children’s talents - the next event is also in aid of Surrey Air Ambulance, who we really do want to raise as much for as possible this year. Tickets are very reasonably priced so do go along to West Horsley Village Hall and support this great local event. All the details are on Pages 32 & 33.

There is so much going on in April and May with Easter hols, the royal wedding and lots of days off! Enjoy it all.

Regards Diana Isherwood Stone Editor E: [email protected] www.thehorsleydirectory.co.uk

When you’re buying new furniture and products for your home, have you ever thought about visiting a reuse organisation? Buying reusable furniture and kitchen appliances is great value, good for the environment and you might just find a hidden treasure.

The Surrey Reuse Network offers a wide range of good quality items at affordable prices. Made up of a group of six charities, the network aims to find new homes for donated furniture and kitchen appliances, as well as offering training and employment opportunities and helping local families in need.

Why buy from a local reuse showroom?

You’ll find everything you need to make a house a home:

Fantastic savings – whether you buy a modern piece of flat pack furniture or a 100-year-old solid wood piece, you’ll be getting a bargain.

Excellent choice – new items come into the showrooms all the time so there is always a wide range to choose from.

Great quality – whether modern or old the items for sale are checked for quality and safety.

Hidden treasures - one off pieces regularly feature and can add a unique sense of style to your home.

Good cause – buying from the network enables the community support it provides, helping families in need and enabling people to get back into work.

Looking for quality and quantity? Give your house an affordable makeover

Did you know? There’s an estimated 3,000 tonnes of reusable furniture and white goods

that end up in Surrey landfill?

To find your nearest reuse show-room call 0800 082 0180 or visit www.surreyreusenetwork.org.uk

Why donate my unwanted furniture?

Find a new home for those items you no longer want or need:

It’s easy – a simple phone call is all it takes to donate. A member of our friendly team will arrange for collection or you can drop it off if easier

Convenient – you will be given a 2 hour collection slot to fit in with when you’ll be at home.

Help on hand – staff from the reuse charities will help take the items out of your home, particularly helpful if you’re elderly or disabled.

Low cost – it will almost always be cheaper to have the items collected and taken away by a reuse charity than any other alternative.

Community benefit – your donation will help raise funds for the community work the charities carry out, helping families in need and enabling people to get back into work.

Green savings – buying reusable items saves them from going to landfill, which is both financially and environmentally costly.

Did you know? You could pick up antique style

armchairs for £60, a 4-piece table and chairs for £70, a sideboard for £30 and

a tall lamp for just £5.

How often have you matched your eye shadow with your outfit, only to realise that the colours which suit you perfectly in clothes, don’t necessarily work on your eyes? We each have our own unique eye shadow palette. The suggestions below are a good starting point to find your perfect colour combination.

BlueBlue eyes look good using grey, violet, taupe or purple. For a more vibrant look, use a deep shade of blue. A dramatic evening effect can be created by adding silver, fuchsia or turquoise.

If your hair is blonde, then violet and lavender are the colours for you, but a combination of red hair and blue eyes calls for brown shades – with a gold shimmer to enhance evening make up.

GreenGreen eyes on redheaded women with pale skin should suit brownish pinks and purple shades, while those with darker skin can go for dark bronze and greens.

Good base colours for both skin tones include cream, mocha,

taupe, peach, apricot, coral, soft purple and light green.

BrownA shimmering cream, eggshell, champagne or apricot covering the entire eyelid gives the perfect base to bring brown eyes to life. Use dark brown or plum in the crease as a contrasting shade and to add depth.

HazelWomen with hazel eyes have the best of all worlds, as their eyes can be made up to look classic, romantic or sexy using a full colour palette. They are able to mix and match – and will find most colours flattering.

Local businesses were given a guided tour of the Surrey Air Ambulance and met its life-saving crew at the helicopter base in a drive to raise awareness and funds.

Representatives from Business Networking International (BNI) were among the guests at an Up Close and Personal event at Dunsfold Park last week (February 22). Supporters of the charity learned about the advanced medical procedures that can be carried out by the specialist doctor and Critical Care Paramedic on board.

Chief Executive Adrian Bell told them: “It’s always good to let people know who we are, what we do and how we do it. We often suffer from the problem that people are not aware that we are a charity and that we don’t get any statutory funding from government. What we bring to an incident is, in effect, an A&E department in the form of the doctor and critical care paramedic enabled by the helicopter’s speed and agility. Yes, we save lives but quality of survival is key to what we do as well because if we can get the team to the scene directly and intervene early we can make a big difference to the nature and speed of a patient’s recovery.”

Local businesses, groups and organisations are currently needed to sponsor events such as the first-ever Double 100 Bike Challenge on July 3rd and Dragonboat Racing on September 17 and 18. Nearly 40 visitors attended the Up Close and Personal event where Dr John O’Neill and paramedic Mick Carter explained how they could carry out anaesthetics, chest surgery, intubation, sedation and pain relief.

The helicopter currently flies during daylight hours but the eventual aim is to provide a 24-hour service after permission for trials of night flying was granted by Waverley Borough Council. Chief Executive Adrian Bell said: “We plan to operate by night and that is quite a significant challenge because operating a helicopter by day is relatively easy. If you then turn the lights out and think of the sort of places where it has to land it gets a little bit harder. But there is a significant number of incidents that we don’t get to because of night time and we think we should be working to achieve that. It will take a long time but we have plans in hand to roll it out over the next three to five years because it takes that long to expand the service in that nature.”

If you would like to make a donation to the Air Ambulance please call 01622 833833. Alternatively cheques can be made payable to Surrey Air Ambulance and posted to Wheelbarrow Park Estate, Pattenden Lane, Marden, Kent, TN12 9QJ

Up Close and Personal

Grace & Flavour, the community vegetable-growingco-operative at Dene Place, Ripley Lane

I have to admit that I am something of a gardening novice, even now after a year working in the Grace & Flavour garden. One of things I most appreciate about this community kitchen garden project is the opportunity to learn as I go. Just last weekend another member taught me how to tell an apple sapling from a pear, and I know from other members that they too love the teaching and learning that is part of every day spent at G&F. It’s one of the things that prompts people to join.

What I did not expect to learn about was aggregates and geotextiles but I have! Grace & Flavour members are just nearing the completion of a car park. We secured Surrey Hills Leader Funding in January after hitting a last minute delay with the lease in December 2010. The funding was enough to cover 85% of the cost of materials for the car park but conditional on completion of the project by the end of March, so it has been a case of all hands to the wheelbarrow. The level of physical work required has been quite something to see, and the numbers of members pitching up to help on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays has been very encouraging.

Once the car park is complete we will be able to gain access far more easily to the garden from Ripley Lane. The path to the community garden will be more easily navigable on foot or by wheelchair too – something we have all been aiming for since we started. The long-awaited allotments will also soon be available, bringing even more people on to the site.

So with better access complete we can turn our thoughts back to planting. The garden is looking in good shape. Many of the potatoes are already in, others are in egg boxes at members’ homes being ‘chitted’. The onions and garlic look very healthy and we have had seed deliveries from both Tozer Direct and organic seed specialist Tamar. Support from Tozer, a local seed company of international repute has made such a difference to the viability of G&F – a stroke of luck to have such a wonderful resource on our doorstep. One of the benefits of having Tozer as a supporter is that we can grow varieties that the G&F gardeners have always wanted to try, not just those that we know people will buy.

So if you want to learn more about vegetable gardening and have some spare hours every once in a while, come along and have a look – you will be very welcome. You can sign up for updates at www.graceandflavour.org

Lifestyle planning can meanmany different things, butmost often it refers to a complete re-appraisal of your personal and financial position coming up to retirement.

Lifestyle planning can be useful at anystage of life, especially when there arechanges such as career moves, marriage, house purchase or children.

The changes at retirement are so greatthat this is the time of life when it ismost useful.

Why plan? Well, there is an old adage:‘He who fails to plan plans to fail’. Mostof us do things, both personally andfinancially, just because they havebecome a habit. This can be very helpfulif circumstances are the same as it saveseffort. However, when circumstances dochange, these habits need reviewing andperhaps new ones need to be started.

Lifestyle planning involves standing backand working out what you actually want– what are your objectives (both yourpersonal objectives and your financialones) and your views? Then you needto look at where you are (this certainlyincludes a financial summary).Next, estimating your finances for futureyears is essential to assess your likelyposition and help you plan. The laststage, of course, is making the changes.

The review when approaching retirement is probably the greatest.Clearly, income is about to change radically, both in type and in size. Formany people there will be a lump sum tobe invested, and all other investmentsshould be reviewed – in general mostpeople should reduce the risk level oftheir investments as there will no longerbe the chance of replacing anything thatis lost. There is also a huge change inthe way you live and it is a good time tore-consider your home, your car, yourholidays, etc.

Fitting all this into one plan will taketime, and is often best done in severalgoes as your views will change as you consider the plan. Often, it can help tosit down with a professional outsiderwho can help you take a more detachedview and re-think some of those habits.

If we can help, please contact Keith Hardy on 01843 225457 or [email protected].

Your plan will also need to change asyour views and circumstances changeand as the world changes, but theprocess of making the plan will put youin a position to adjust it to reflect thechanges.

Karine Millington started the Charity Junior Open Mic at West Horsley Village Hall in January. Her idea was to have a venue where youngsters could perform, sing or play an instrument, in order to entertain a family friendly audience. She set the tickets at a very reasonable price of – £10 for Adults and £5 for children and this includes a two course supper. Although her idea was also to raise money for charity, she really wanted local families to be able to afford to come and support the amazing young talent she knew was available locally.

At her January event, she managed to raise £225 for Cancer Research and £300 for Creche de Tangier in February – an Orphanage in Morocco which a group of Surrey youngsters are going to visit with the Voice in a Million Singing Academy. Both evenings were sold out and a large audience of 100 were entertained by an amazing selection of musicians, including a 7 year old on keyboards, a couple of 8 year old Saxophonists, a 13 year old guitarist and ukulele player who wrote his own song, a band of 13 year olds and lots of singers aged between 8 -16 years of age - some of whom sang solos and some duets.

Karine said that the feedback they received was absolutely amazing...'Better than X Factor' was a remark heard on several occasions!

Junior Open Mic

The next Open Mike event will be on Sunday 10th April to raise money for The Horsley Directory’s Charity of the Year 2011 - Surrey Air Ambulance. If you would like to buy some tickets or to book a performance slot, please contact Karine Millington on 01483 284744 / 07710 257779 or

Most adults were brought up with the idea that children need a good blast of fresh air outside (come rain or shine, with the latter bringing vital Vitamin D) for health and general well-being. But is this just an urban myth?

Young children need space to run, explore, create and make a noise that is perhaps considered inappropriate inside. Early years educational establishments offering extensive purpose-built play areas plus spacious grounds can offer children the best of both worlds. Staff at Bright Stars schedule a significant amount of activity outside be it exploring the fenced play area with its slides, structures and steps or taking children into the spacious playing fields and grounds. All these activities could be judged as being just ‘play’. However, they are carefully planned and include the six areas of the curriculum with intended learning goals aimed at each individual child’s development.

Young children need time outside that is not too structured or adult-led and that an outdoor environment can encourage all sorts of creative and motor skill development. Physical play uses climbing equipment, tricycles and large grassy areas; constructive play works through mediums such as blocks, sand, water, art; social play develops skills vital for later life; socio-dramatic play allows children to impose their own meaning and adult-led games often need space for best advantage.

Learning about the world takes on a new aspect… does a stick stand up best in sand or mud? What gives shade from the sun and do clouds mean it’s more likely to rain? It’s so much more fun and stimulating to learn these things outside where it’s easier to see how the natural world and wider environment fit together.

For adults, outdoor exercise brings feelings of energy and revitalisation and decreases tension and anger; and it’s no different for nursery-age children. Just look at the difference in children who’ve been ‘cooped up’ indoors followed by time in the sandpit and games on the playing fields. The invigorating effect of experiences that are different from classroom-based learning must not be underestimated; and their overall role in children’s health is key.

Safe space to fulfill basic childhood needs - from jumping to hiding and making a big mess - is key to a successful nursery education. And a successful stimulating nursery education engendering a love of learning unlocks the next stage of development. So, a nursery such as Bright Stars will enable little children just to be children. They will still learn and develop but most importantly reach their potential in a happy, safe and nurturing environment.

Every experience counts and nursery education should be well-rounded, stimulating and secure. The natural world is all around us so let’s get our children out there to have fun and learn along the way.

Our Society has experienced another very successful year. New members have been welcomed and new ideas put into motion. It is important to us that we make sure as many people as possible know of our existence.

We enjoy sharing our interest in art and art history. Members do not have to be painters; they can still attend the meetings held every fourth Wednesday of each month in the East Horsley Village Hall at 8 pm. These are demonstrations or talks given by esteemed artists in a variety of media and subjects. For those of us who do paint, there are periodic workshops run by diverse and talented artists. There is no criteria or favoured medium – everyone who shares our love of art is welcome.

The meetings are informal, friendly and informative. For a modest fee of £4, guests are very welcome or if you are tempted to join us (and we hope you are) - we will be delighted to see you. Annual Subscriptions are £20 single, £30 for a couple.

Our programme for the rest of the year includes:

c Talk on The Hidden Meaning of Flowers in Painting c Demonstration of Fractured Work in Acrylics c Talk on ‘Your Back Garden’ (in terms of Art) c Demonstration of Still Life in Watercolour c Meet to Paint c Critique of members’ pictures c Annual Exhibition of Members’ work c Demonstration in Oils c AGM

Full details of this programme are displayed on The East Horsley Village Hall notice board.
