May The Fourth Be With You!

Well, it barely feels like spring but summer is quickly approaching. First up - a reminder that as of May 1st Summer Electricity rates are in effect. While we will be cut a small break on our bills, another reminder that peek times have changed, so adjust your laundry and other power hungry habits accordingly.

Summer residents are slowly starting to trickle back. Some of you may not even be aware, but The Clippings underwent a change of ownership just 8 short months

ago and this is already our 30th issue. How time flies! With more events coming up, this is very likely the last 12 page Clippings you will see in for a while.

While this week’s issue is a little light on content com-pared to recent weeks, check out all the announcements for upcoming events on the Island. Things are picking up! Lots of events are coming up and if there is some-thing you think would make for a good feature in the Clippings, please let us know. We are open to new ideas.

You are a Badass: How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an Awesome LifeWritten by Jen SinceroPublished by Running Press (2013) (243 pages)

The title caught my attention.... Seriously, some-one who uses a title like that - would have to have written an interesting book.

And it was - It was a fun and entertaining read. It has a goodly number of expletives and F bombs. It reads like a good chinwag with one of your more potty mouthed outrageous buddies. Sincero has reframed messages you may have heard before, but with her personal homilies and colourful ex-amples.

Her main message is trust and connect with God, Spirit, the Force, or whatever words you use to describe the Creator, learn to love your awesome-ness, and if you want to do something – go do it – now already - no matter what anyone else thinks.

She has some tips, and lots of motivational earthy quips throughout the book. Here are a couple of examples; · If you are serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse. · Never apologize for who you are. It lets the whole world down. · We pretend we’ve made a decision when what we’ve really done is signed up to try until it gets too uncomfortable” (…which reminds me of Yoda – “Do or do not, there is no try”…. But that is another story) · The only failure is quitting. Everything else is just gathering information. · Your faith in the Universe must be stron-ger than your fear of not getting what you want · Doing vs Spewing. · All life is either moving forward and evolving or shrinking back and dying. · Align your energy with the financial abundance you seek. Treat your relationship with money like any other important and meaningful relationship.

Sincero’s TED talk can be found at; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vubWueH_skA

‘You are a Badass’ is available at the St Joseph Pub-lic Library.

IS THAT POTATO IN MY MASHED GARLIC?

2 lb.baking potatoes, peeled and cubed 4 Tbsp butter1 ½ tsp kosher salt ½ tsp freshly ground pepper 1 Tbsp olive oil 3-4 Tbsp. whipping cream1 head of garlic - peeled

In a pot, add the potatoes and ½ tsp of the salt, and cover with cold water. Cover and bring to a boil for 15 to 20 minutes or until fork-tender.

Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Add all the garlic and slowly brown, 10 to 15 minutes -- slow – and low – don’t burn this or it will be ruined!

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them then return them to the pot. Add the garlic and oil. Add the butter, the re-maining salt, and the pepper, and cream and mash with a potato masher. A small amount of chunkiness adds to the texture.

You can add ½ cup shredded old Can-adain cheddar cheese, ¼ cup chopped chives, or a 1/2 cup chopped cooked bacon – or go nuts and add it all….. make it your own

Mealy potatoes ie russets, are great for mashing – they get really fluffy!

Children’s Library Welcomes Karen Gummo!

The library is delighted to announce that story teller and visual artist Karen Gummo will be visiting Wednesday, May 10th! Since 1986 she has been performing favour-ite tales for eager audiences. Her Danish and Icelandic heritage provides her with countless sagas of the Vikings and of the humble folk of Scandinavia. Karen Gummo’s presentations have been described as fascinating and inspirational, as she seamlessly weaves together music, folklore and tales from around the world that capture her imagination! Karen promises that the kids will “sing, chant, versify and move!” as they participate in her pre-sentation. We look forward to welcoming Karen to the library and hope to see you there on May 10th at 4PM. Karen is visiting The Children’s Library as part of TD’s Children’s Book Week. TD Canadian Children’s Book Week is the single most important national event cele-brating Canadian children’s books and the importance of reading. Each May, over 400 readings are given to over 28,000 children, teens and adults in roughly 175 communities across the country as we make every possible effort to reach children in more remote regions and communities. Hundreds of schools, public libraries, bookstores and community centres host events as part of this major literary festival. We are glad to see our The Children’s Library included in this Canada wide event.

A bird most of us are familiar with are back in town, for the summer and to reproduce. What you may not know is the red-winged blackbird is one of the most populous birds in North America with a distribution range stretch-ing from Alaska to Guatemala, with isolated populations in western El Salvador, northwestern Honduras, and northwestern Costa Rica and a population estimate of up to 250 million in good years. While they do winter as far north as Pennsylvania, the population around here does migrate for the winter.

Lately we have been hearing these guys chirp like crazy in large numbers. Initially, my fear was the sound was bats, but thankfully a neighbour alerted us to the fact it was just the blackbirds. They nest in cattails, rushes, grasses, sedge, or in alder or willow bushes which explains why we see so many of them on the island. While the males are easily recognized the females are a nondescript dark brown. This perhaps helps them keep camouflaged at their nest sites. We didn’t have a photo of a female to include but they really look like any regular brown bird...
