What a difference 12 months make………

Rainfall Figures 2017 2018 Average 1992-2016

January 32mm 70mm 71mm

February 68mm 58mm 52mm

March 52mm 100mm 47mm

Totals 152mm 228mm 170mm

The statistics above say it all, it has been wet! On average at Kenwick, March is the driest month of the year! Unfortunately not this year. I would like to thank the all the members for their patience during this frustrating time. The Golf season across the

country has made a stuttering start, but with the Masters just around the corner, hopefully an Epic tournament in Augusta can ignite a fire in Golf ’s rather wet Belly!!

2018/19 Subscriptions The Board are pleased to announce that Subscription rates have been held again for the forthcoming season. Despite costs increasing each year our strong intake of New Members have ensured that we have been able to keep Full subscriptions under £800 (excl levy), while nearly all of our local competitors have seen significant increases. Our subscription year remains 1st June to 31st May. Playing Golf as a Full Adult member costs the same now as it did in 2008. This is despite general Prices in 2017 being 25.5% higher than prices in 2008.

In other words, £1 in the year 2008 is equivalent in purchasing power to £1.26 in 2017, a difference of £0.26 over 9 years.

Course News Spring is finally here (!!!) and the growing season is nearly upon us. I feel that a lot of progress has been made this winter especially on the woodland management side. Areas like behind the 11th green and to the left of the 8th green now look tidy and add to the aesthetics of the hole as well as improving light and air movement.

Last week we took advantage of the dry weather and hollow cored and top dressed all our greens which was great timing as having a dry week allows us to brush the topdressing in a lot more efficiently. They were top dressed again later in the week and then brushed to help the sand work into the tine holes. The fairways have had their first mow of the season last week, taking advantage of the drier weather and the ground being the firmest it has been in months. This has given the course a lot more definition after a long winter when definition is not necessarily a priority. We will start mowing the semi rough soon and this will also be determined by the ground conditions out on the course as it is a big heavy machine. The tees have been mowed and are being fertilized this week with a slow release fertilizer. Other areas on the course where the turf is weak will also be treated with a granular fertilizer. This includes areas such as around the 1st green surrounds. The fairways will also receive some fertilizer once Easter is out of the way and will then be sprayed with a herbicide to control the broad leaf weeds and clover including the English daisies which we are not short of here at Kenwick.

The new semi rough mower was delivered last week and again I would like to say thank you to the board for their commitment to purchasing the very best machinery. It is the hardest working machine in our fleet and this new model will allow us to mow significantly faster thereby allowing us to re-do certain areas of fast growing semi rough that in the past were only done once a week during the height of the growing season. The STRI advisory report came back with some very encouraging statistics. Thatch levels in the greens have been reduced and we are now nearly within a range of what is considered acceptable for a healthy green. I am totally committed to this and with the continued program of hollow coring and frequent topdressing I feel that the target range can be reached and maintained in the not too distant future.

John Hood Unfortunately the miserable winter brought further bad news with the passing of another member. John Hood aged just 62 passed away after a short but brave battle with illness. John was a fantastic 5 handicapper but most importantly an incredibly popular part of the Seniors and his Saturday morning group. The day after 31 of the 122 competitors in the Saturday Stableford made 2’s at the Par 3’s Sam Done and Sam Baines went one better! On his way to winning the Gardner Greensomes with Partner Elaine Houlton, Doney holed out a 6 iron shot at the 8th hole, his 2nd hole in one at Kenwick in less than 12 months. Meanwhile, on the back 9, Sam Baines was having a ‘friendly’ match with brother Josh when he aced the 12th hole! Summer Knockouts-Deadline extended
