Leadership
Hey everyone!! I am so thankful and excited to be the executive vice president in such an awesome organization and community. Circle K International is the premier collegiate and university community service, leadership development, and friendship organization in the WORLD, and I am looking forward to JMU’s chapter really making that known in our community. I am also looking forward to getting to know every one of our members on a more personal level and really making this organization into even more than it already is.
I know the school year is coming to an end and everything is winding down, but I encourage you all to continue your JMU and Circle K spirit throughout the summer and into next year! Keep thinking about Circle K over the summer, about how we could improve our chapter, and how we could improve the JMU and Harrisonburg community. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let the board know. We are always open and ready to hear all of your ideas! Have an awesome summer everyone!

Looking up at the stars listening to the names of each person who is battling or lost their fight to cancer was one of the most intimate moments of the 2013 JMU Relay for Life. Each name represents a family who cared for their loved one. Each name represents a fighter, someone who loved hard and fought against the disease. Each name represents a step taken towards finding a cure for cancer.
On Hillside Lawn we set up our spot with blankets, sweatshirts, and cupcakes ready for the cold night. We stood by the track as 2 of our CKI friends walked the first lap with their families. We watched as friends looped the track starting the night strong and ready for the many hours ahead. Relay for Life can always be thought of as a night to celebrate a cure, remember those who we have lost, and fight back against cancer. It is a one night event that allows the JMU community to sleep under the stars, dance, and walk for a common goal.

First Friday Free By: Caitlin Francis
On the First Friday in April, we helped our Kiwanians with their regular service event: First Friday Free. This takes place at the local children’s museum (The Explore More Discovery Museum) each month to give our community an opportunity to explore the museum for free. As a result, they need a lot of volunteers to facilitate the larger number of visitors. The Kiwanians were responsible for the art center within the museum and we helped them run two crafts: making Slime and Mobius strips. It was a lot of fun to work with the kids, and it was great to introduce more of our members to our older counterparts.

The BIG Event By: Katie Benusa On Saturday, April 13, five of us participated in The Big Event. This events purpose is
to bring the two communities, JMU and Harrisonburg, together through volunteer work. We all meet at Wilson where we checked in and received our free t-shirt, water, lunch and travel mug. After we were all there, we headed over to our assigned location, the Muhlenberg Lutheran Church, which located in downtown Harrisonburg. We helped members of the church beautify the area around the church. We picked weeds and helped spread mulch around their flowerbeds. It was a good workout moving wheelbarrows full of mulch to different locations around the church. Once our job was complete, all of us enjoyed slices of pizza. It is great to know that we were able to give back to the community by helping the Lutheran church with their project.

Football Concessions By: Emily Benusa
Bright and early on a beautiful spring morning, the CKI-ers all awakened to serve the community of Harrisonburg by volunteering in the Shenandoah Valley Autism Partnership 5k Walk. Though it was cold and the sun was still not up, the volunteers were bright-eyed and ready to work. The majority of the volunteers were course marshals and endured the frigid air for 3 hours outside without one complaint. Seeing the runners pushing through and running for a cause helped to motivate all of us as well! At the end of the day, the satisfaction of knowing that we helped raise money to go towards SVAP and to support families of autistic children was the only reward we needed. Oh, and free chips and queso from Qdoba didn’t hurt either!
Autism Walk By: Cate Sumerlin
With our hats and long pants in place, JMU CKI-ers made their way up to Bridgeforth Stadium on JMU's campus. A home scrimmage, gold against purple, was a JMU marketing game for families and season ticket holders and dedicated fans. We were excited to help serve these people. Parents to siblings a like ordered hotdogs, cheeseburgers, candy, kettle chips and many more. We all had fun running registers and running food. Not only was it fun, but from this event the James Madison Athletics will donate a part of the proceeds to our club. What could be better than having fun and getting funds for our service organization?!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Before the spring semester came to a close, JMU Circle K members visited Kline’s ice cream shop. Between milkshakes and cones, cups and sundaes, everyone got to enjoy their delicious treats and bond one last time before the summer season.
STUDY SOCIAL
Everyone knows finding a quiet place to study before exam week has always been a struggle. The dorms are too loud and the libraries are much too crowded! That’s why JMU Circle K members decided to book our own study room for the day. Whether a student be reviewing for a test or practicing for a presentation, the social was a success and work was accomplished! We hope as a club to continue this event in the future.
KLINE’S ICE CREAM
March Member of the Month
Emily Hsu received March member of the month because she worked at Emeritus (a local retirement home), collected Box Tops for a local elementary school, and wrote pen pals to second graders at Keister Elementary. Way to go Emily!
