Homeward bound after 8 yearsKrista Hodges of Honolulu had lost hope of ever fi nding her dog Saimin. Eight long years had come and gone since Saimin disappeared in 2005 while Krista

was traveling and left her beloved dog with her son.

12-year-old Saimin arrived at the Hawaiian Humane Society on

New Year’s Day – brought in by someone who could no longer care for the aging dog. We found that Saimin had a microchip, which connected us to Krista, who had lost her dog nearly a decade ago. She was ecstatic to hear that her long-lost Saimin had been found and the family was reunited.

Hawaiian Humane Society

People for animals. Animals for people.

President’s Message

Tag!–You’re it.

All cats deserve community support

Pamela Burns President and CEO

Th e Hawaiian Humane Society believes that every cat deserves a lap and those that don’t have one need our compassion and care. Th ere are far too many homeless cats at large struggling to survive in our neighborhoods and streets.

A 2012 Ward Research study commissioned

by the Hawaiian Humane Society estimates that there are approximately 300,000 free roaming and feral cats on Oahu.

All the more reason to keep cats indoors for

their protection. Cat owners should never abandon

their cats to a colony or leave them behind when moving. It’s against the law and causes great suff ering to these animals.

Th e Hawaiian Humane Society and cat rescue groups have been challenged by the number and plight of these animals. Th e Society helps in as many ways as it can every year:

Cats, owned and feral, deserve community support

sterilizing thousands of feral cats a year, assisting with hundreds of cases involving community cats, supporting policies to address the issues, and rehoming kittens captured outdoors. More people

need to become educated and involved. The issue of a growing population of free-roaming cats is greater than the noble efforts currently being made.

The Ward Research findings also concluded that nearly 20 percent

of Oahu residents are feeding cats they don’t consider their own and 70 percent of these people don’t know if the cats are sterilized.

“Trap, Neuter, Return & Manage” (TNRM) is a strategy supported by organizations and many individuals.

It’s going to take the entire community to help reduce populations humanely, through sterilization efforts, for which more funding is needed and veterinarians to perform the surgeries. We must increase awareness about the

plight of cats outdoors and increase involvement and support from all sectors of the community.

Together, we can find ways both large and small so the issue can be approached with compassion and diligence.

Animal protection gets traction at Legislature A number of proposals at the legislature are being heard that need your support. Measures aim to help animals and people in a wide variety of ways from prohibiting the use of bone-crushing animal trap devices, allowing landlords to secure a pet deposit to avoid charging higher rents to tenants with pets to regulation of commercial breeding operations that sell puppies.

Get involved by contacting the Humane Society’s policy advocate Jennifer Han at 356-2217 or [email protected]. Visit HawaiianHumane.org to view measures that we’re supporting.

Truth about ToxoplasmosisToxoplasmosis is a rare and easily avoidable parasite. The most common way that people contract this is by eating meat that’s not cooked thoroughly. Toxoplasmosis is transmitted to people from felines only by touching infected feces and not washing your hands.

Ear notching identifies sterilization. A notch to the right ear indicates the cat is a female; the left ear indicates a male.

They are speechless without your voice.

Fostering success for the animalsHonolulu Veterinary Society has selected the Hawaiian Humane Society for its 2012 Best Friends Award in recognition of its foster care program.

“This is such a huge honor for all of us at the Humane Society and we greatly appreciate the support we receive from the veterinary community,” said Dr. Aleisha Swartz, DVM, chief veterinarian at the Humane Society.

Foster care helps thousands of orphaned animals, as well as

owned animals. The Humane Society offers temporary emergency fostering to those hospitalized, victims of domestic violence and deployed military.

Nearly 150 animals are in foster care at any given time and this past year more than 2,000 shelter animals benefited from foster care.

More foster care providers are urgently needed due to kitten season. Call 356-2229 to volunteer.

“Hawaiian Humane Society’s rescue and emergency services. How may I help you?”

“There’s this dog that needs help…”

More than 12,000 calls for help are made each year to the Humane Society. Many of which result in happy endings for animals and punishment for abusers.

In July 2012, a dog named Sadie was rescued from the industrial Sand Island area. She was found emaciated with a rusted chain around her neck, which was on for so long and so tight that it embedded in her neck. We were able to locate Sadie’s owner, who

claimed to have given the dog to a friend. The truth, revealed in court,

determined that this was not the case. On January 7, Sadie’s owner

pled no contest. He had indeed abandoned her at Sand Island. Since then, Sadie has made a full recovery and has found a new home. The Nakasones of Kalihi-Uka say Sadie’s wonderful personality has brought them so much joy. “She’s a great girl who keeps us on our toes. In the house she loves to relax and chill with all of us, but once she’s outside she likes to run free,” said Jodie Nakasone.

The Humane Society’s chief veterinarian Aleisha Swartz, DVM, has been selected to serve on the board of the Hawaii

Veterinary Medical Association.

Leaving a legacy for animals less fortunateFriends of the animals who have created planned gift s to the Humane Society have made great things happen from housing upgrades so that our furry friends are more comfortable during their stay to expanding our foster care program so that we can save more lives.

“Animal welfare is my priority,” said animal advocate Ginny Tiu. “Since becoming more involved with the Hawaiian Humane Society, including being a board member, I see fi rsthand what a well-run organization it is. I feel that it is up to those of us who care about animals to do all that we can, now

and when we’re gone.”

Reverend Larry Gardner is a longtime friend of the Humane Society and comes to the shelter several times a week to visit with the cats. “Animals have been a very important part of my life ever since a beautiful

cat adopted me while I was paying little attention to her,” said Reverend Gardner. “Th is was a crucial time in my life as I was very seriously ill. She became a most precious friend - so I know that pets can do the same for others.”

Th e Reverend has established a Revocable Living Trust for the Hawaiian Humane Society.

Ensure a Future for

Humane Society’s Work

Be wise, help sterilizePet overpopulation is a continuing problem on Oahu. Consider these astounding numbers: one female cat and her off spring can produce more than 420,000 cats in seven years and one unsterilized dog and her off spring can produce more than 67,000 dogs in six years.

Because only 56% of household dogs and 87% of household cats on Oahu are spayed or neutered, thousands of unwanted kittens and puppies could be born.

Neuter Now certifi cates can be purchased at any Satellite City Hall, Hawaiian Humane Society or at HawaiianHumane.org. Th is enables you to take your pet to participating veterinarians islandwide for spay-neuter services at reduced rates.

China-made jerky treats poses danger to petsChicken jerky pet treats from China are still causing problems for pet owners. According to updated reports fi led with the Food and Drug Administration, more than 500 dogs and one cat have died aft er ingesting the treats. Th at’s up from an estimated 360 dog deaths and one cat death reported last summer.

Th is has prompted Nestle Purina PetCare to voluntarily recall its popular Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats and Del Monte Corp. to pull their Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats from store shelves nationwide.

FDA offi cials still aren’t sure what’s making animals sick. Tests have found trace amounts of antibiotic residue, but that the levels don’t pose a threat to animals or people.

How much is that doggie in the window?Know that puppy love can come at a price. If you are smitten by that puppy for sale at a pet shop or on the internet, there are a few things to know. Hawaiian Humane Society estimates that there are more than 4,000 puppies for sale every year through these venues at a projected revenue of more than $4 million. Th at’s big business.

Responsible breeders never sell animals without wanting to learn about you and have you meet the puppy’s parents. Th ey want to know where their puppies go and have a relationship with you. Th ose who acquire puppies should want the same.

Companies with a conscience such as Petco and PetSmart have partnered with the Hawaiian Humane Society to fi nd families for thousands of orphaned pets. Th ey aim to end homelessness and irresponsible breeding in which profi t is more important than welfare. Th is is something to consider the next time you shop for pet supplies.

Hawaii’s case involving commercial breeding concluded last year. On December 19, 2012, Judge Glenn Kim sentenced David Lee Becker, who pled no contest to 153 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, to a total of six months jail time. Th e

court credited Becker with his time already served, which began in June 2012 when he was extradited from Las Vegas to Honolulu. Judge Kim did not prohibit Becker from owning animals. Th e Hawaiian Humane Society was also denied restitution, which has been awarded in other cases.

Pets for adoption are available at PetSmart Mililani, Enchanted Lakes Pet Center and Petco stores islandwide: Beretania, Ewa Beach, Hawaii Kai, Kaneohe, Pearl City and Kapolei.

You, too, can run a Humane Society Adopt a Pet event. Call 356-2244.

Islandwide Adoptions

Educational partnerships for a better futureTh e Humane Society seeks groups that are willing to be a best friend to the animals. Partnerships help

us reach more students to teach leadership and compassion for animals.

Special thanks to these organizations who have joined the pack: Kamaaina Kids, YMCA of Kalihi, YMCA of Mililani, YMCA of Kaimuki, Boys & Girls Club Spalding Clubhouse and Boys & Girls Club Hale Pono Clubhouse. More than 6,000 youths are reached through these partnerships.

Chef Peter Merriman’s Monkeypod Kitchen in Ko Olina and EK Fernandez’ Fun Factory have donated gift certifi cates for food and fun in support of youth education. If you’d like to get involved, contact 356-2206 or [email protected]

Business sector and military lend hands to the animalsCompanies that are seeking ways to nurture a culture of caring and team work are stepping away from their desks and duties for a day of service at the shelter. Hawaiian Humane Society offers a unique way to build team work and passion in the business community by opening its doors to corporate volunteers.

Insurance company Fairmont Specialty rallied more than 25 employees to kick off the holiday season for the animals. They decorated the shelter, walked dogs, washed rescue vehicles and assisted with our pet food bank. Bonterra Solar employees stepped out for a day in the sun by walking dogs and preparing treats for our animal enrichment programs.

The Single Marine & Sailor Program Hawaii visit the shelter and take dogs running. These

service members volunteer their time and leg-power providing our pooches with social interaction, positive attention, exercise and mental stimulation.

Members of the Single Marine & Sailor Program volunteer to exercise and socialize dogs awaiting adoption.

Hawaiian Humane Society’s specialty services Most know about Hawaiian Humane Society’s adoptions center and that we serve as Oahu’s only open-door shelter that welcomes all. In fact, we offer more than 30 services and programs. Here are a few of our least-known services for animals and people.

Pets layover with us. Each year, thousands of pets relocate with their families and layover in Hawaii headed to or coming from international destinations. The Humane Society is contracted by airlines to provide care for animals during layovers. Our on-call staff is ready 24 hours a day to aid animal travelers at the request of airlines.

Microchips create family reunions. More than 20,000 island pets get a

microchip every year. Animal clinics island wide that implant microchips send us your contact information so that if lost pets arrive at the Humane Society, we can find you quickly. Every day between Noon and 4 pet owners can bring their cats or dogs

in for microchipping for $15. No appointment is required.

Compassion at the end of life. While euthanasia is never an easy decision, it takes a great deal of strength and love. When pets can

no longer live with dignity and without pain, owners may opt for euthanasia and private cremation in which ashes can be returned. We also accept deceased pets. These services are offered for the lowest possible fees as part of our non-profit services.

Gifts of Love

Little Haley’s birthday wish comes trueHonolulu Attorney Blake Goodman approached the Humane Society with an unusual request – to host a party for a friend of his daughter. Nine-year-old Haley is an animal lover who dreamed of a birthday in which she was surrounded by cats and dogs. In honor of her fight against cancer, he wanted to make that wish come true and so did we.

In January, we hosted a surprise party for Haley with her family and friends who wore pink Princess Haley shirts to show their support.

Haley and her guests got to pet, feed and fall in love with the animals.

We’re still not sure who had more fun – the animals or the kids.
