Year 7 Parents and Students having fun playing Indonesian
games on Tuesday night!
From the Deputy Principal
Uniform
As we move into the warmer months we would like to remind students and their
families about uniform expectations. Students need to wear a school polo or senior
shirt and grey shorts for boys and blue shorts or the school skirt for girls. Shorts and
skirts must be an appropriate length, i.e. their shorts or skirts must be longer than
fingertips with their arms at their side, if they are not then students will be required to
change and borrow a pair of school shorts to do this. If families need any financial
support to purchase uniforms please contact the Front Office for student assistance.
From the start of Term 4 we will be following these new processes. Please note for
boys it is only GREY shorts, not blue as previously mentioned.
Year 10
An unofficial Year 10 Formal is currently being organised by students for next
term which is not sanctioned by the school. Students/parents need to be aware
that this is not a school event and will not be supervised.

Science News Year 12 Earth & Environmental Science Guest
Speaker
Year 12 Earth and Environmental students recently took part in an interesting
discussion with Mr Simon O’Connor. Simon has vast experience in dealing with feral
introductions to Australia and the strategies for reducing their populations and
preventing their spread. Many thanks to Simon for taking the time to share his
industry knowledge with the class.

Careers News
Name: Karen Yager
Year left BHS: 1999
Current Job: Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at Victoria University
Subjects studied in Years 11/12:
It was so long ago it is hard to remember! I did the
usual Maths and English, as well as Biology, PDHPE,
and Computer Studies (the internet had just been
invented when I was at high school!). I wish I had
done Textiles and Woodwork!
Inspirations
In high school I was inspired by my PDHPE teachers.
Now I am inspired by the excellent researchers and
leaders in my field. It is always helpful to seek out mentors and seek advice from people who
are a few steps ahead of you. Also my mum – she was right when she said I could do anything
I put my mind to!
Challenges
Doing a Doctor of Philosophy [PhD] - Spending four years working on a research project and
writing it up in an 80-100,000 word document - was quite a challenge! However, it has been
worth it as it allows me to work in universities, pursue my research, and teach people who share
my passion for Health and Physical Education.
Career pathway since leaving school I had always wanted to be a teacher, and my PDHPE teachers at Bellingen High School were a large part of my inspiration to become a PDHPE teacher - one of my teachers was Peter Denham who also went to Bellingen High!
Once I finished my teaching degree I decided that I enjoyed research more than I enjoyed the classroom management aspect of teaching, so I did a PhD.
I now manage the Master of Teaching (Secondary) course at VU, teach people who will become secondary school teachers, and do research in body image. I love the diversity and autonomy of my current role.
Favourite school memory Very few- I enjoyed university much more than high school (sorry!).
Advice to current students Don't worry about weighting, grading, and achieving certain scores in your HSC - work as hard as you can doing things that you love and you will get where you want to go eventually!
Ex Student Career Spotlight
Attention Year 10!
There are only a few places left on the QLD Universities Excursion. Although this excursion isn't until the end of the year, permission notes must be in by the end of Week
1 Term 4. Don't miss out!
UNE Future of Work Seminar
Thank you to UNE for a wonderful excursion to
Armidale and Tamworth recently. Students experienced life as an on campus student at UNE
with overnight accommodation at Austin College.
The next day we set off for Tamworth after a hearty breakfast, where we attended a fascinating
seminar about the future of work with famous guest speakers and a mini careers expo. Cooper ensured we wouldn't go hungry on the trip home
by acquiring a large box of free muffins - thanks Cooper.

Year 12 have been busy this week!
From the Ag Plot Last lesson for Year 12 Agriculture
The class has worked hard over the last two years and it is both sad to see them leave, and happy that they all have plans, and are working those plans for their successful future. During our class last Friday, the students helped load the show cattle on the truck, reminiscing about their years at Bellingen High School, and in Agriculture.
Good Luck, Year 12 Agriculture!
First Spring Chickens Hatched
The breeding season has now commenced with the first batch of chickens cracking out of their eggs. It was great to see students from the poultry club sitting next to the incubator hoping to witness the moment of the chicken jumping out of the egg.
The plan is to hatch out enough Silver Pencil Wyandottes so every student can have their own chicken, which they can nurture, and present at the Bellingen Show. The winning chickens will form the 2019 breeding flock, and hopefully go on to win at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
These birds are quite rare, so I urge you to consider keeping some of these at home if you have the space. They are lovely natured, lay a smallish tasty egg, and just love scratching around in the garden.
Very Busy Show Schedule Commences
The Show Team is competing at Taree from the 4th to the 6th October, and Lismore from the 17th to 20th October, which is the first week of Term 4. A keen group of Agriculture students will also attend the Red Poll Cattle Camp held each year in Glen Innes, over the last 3 days of the school holidays.
To prepare for the shows, during the holidays, the team will spend many hours washing, brushing, parading and spending time preparing all the gear required to attend a cattle show.
To make things even more challenging for the students, the Bellingen High Silver Pencil Wyandottes are also entered into the shows, along with the prize winning eggs from our free range hens. Let the Shows begin!
Sad To Say Good-Bye
The well-loved goats will leave the school farm during the holidays and travel to new homes where they will be loved. Each day during Term 3 they met the students with joy, with everyone coming to understand a lot more about goat behaviour. They learned how to parade, provide the correct feed, clean their enclosure, and most importantly, wash their milk bottle after use.
Bellingen High School Farm has formed a relationship with a milking goat farm in Grafton which will hopefully lead to more cute and cuddly bottle fed goats arriving at the start of Term 3 next year …… here’s hoping!
Year 7 Chicken Project Concludes
The chickens are now 10 weeks old and look very healthy, and different from when they first arrived at the start of term. It was great to see so many students spending time during their Year 7 Science classes, and at lunchtimes, looking after their chicken.
Many of the chickens are traveling home with students and will spend time in the Bellingen community.
If you would like a very quiet 10 week old chicken that will become a lovely laying hen, they’re about 20 available for sale at the bargain price of $15 (to cover costs). They are very quiet and lovingly trained by our Year 7 Science students.
Junior Agriculture Assessment
Years 9 and 10 students have commenced their practical assessments this week, and will complete them early in Term 4. They are required to attempt nine practical animal and plant tasks on the school farm. They involve working with the show poultry, laying hens, chickens, sheep and cattle and managing their gardens. After completing each task their farm diary has to be completed.
The students also have a written practical test, which will test their literacy skills, and their agricultural knowledge.
Dorrigo Show Gardens now germinating
The students have been busy working on their gardens and are now starting to see something for their efforts. They have planted a wide range of seeds. The produce harvested from these gardens is targeted at winning “Best Exhibit” at the Dorrigo Show. Maybe the most important thing is just watching students pick something straight from the garden and eating it, or of course, taking it home for dinner. Need some rain.

Tell Them From Me parent survey
We are delighted that in Term 4, Bellingen High School, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
We want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form (below) and FAQs (attached) for parents/carers about the survey has been emailed to parents/carers. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday 15th October 2018. Copies of these are also available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages. Haridian Ramirez

Sport News AFL Gala Day
This week nearly 40 of our students had a great time at our local AFL Gala
day, playing against teams from Toormina High, Bishop Druitt and Coffs Harbour
High. Although many of our players were new to AFL they gave it their all and
impressed spectators with their enthusiasm and skills despite the torrential rain!
It was wonderful to see the girls loving the sport and working well as a team.
Thanks to wonder coach Mr Sullings for his time and energy and to Mrs Gorman,
sub coach for her chocolate chip muffins and oranges!!
