2012 Course Descriptions and InstructorsAdvanced Farm Machinery Rescue

Building on last year’s Farm Extrication I techniques, rescuers will be involved with advanced stabilization skills utilizing rescue jacks, rescue struts and picket systems in scenario based learning.  Patient care and packaging will be part of the scenario, challenging the ability of the rescuers to manage the incident. Prerequisite: Farm Rescue or Farm Extrication.

Today’s Company Officer/Survival Officer / Instructor Forest ReederSurvival is job one. As company officer, your job description now reads that you are the survival officer who is charged with that responsibility. Learn how the company officer and crew members will work together to survive a fireground operation by focusing on four key elements of company survival; people, air, location, and situation (PALS). Many interior operations that have claimed firefighters’ lives have common threads that need to be put into an action plan that will save future lives. Reeder is the Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors 2011 Instructor of the Year!

Making Training Count So That Everyone Goes Home / Instructor Forest ReederFinding ways to make training count takes creativity, enthusiasm, and a desire to go the extra mile to ensure everyone goes home. This class will offer suggestions to make quick drills, kitchen table, or tailboard training sessions have huge impacts on our responders. Reeder is the Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors 2011 Instructor of the Year!

Haz Mat Operations3-day Hazardous Materials Operations course provides those who are or will be operating as a member of a fire department, law enforcement agency, EMS agency, emergency management agency, or other first responder agency, the basic skills needed to do basic hazard and risk-assessment at an incident involving the release of hazardous materials. Topics include selecting and using proper personal protective equipment, performing basic control, containment and/or confinement operations, decontamination and an understanding of termination procedures

G108 Community Mass CareThis course is intended to equip emergency management staff and voluntary agency personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform as effective mass care coordinators in a broad range of disaster situations. The course covers how to assess and size up mass care needs; how to plan for mass care; recruitment, training, and exercises for mass care personnel; and actions to take in short term and long-term mass care operations (response and recovery).

Statement AnalysisThree-day law enforcement class on how to utilize written and verbal statements to detect truth or deception and set up effective interviews. It will also deal with verbal and nonverbal interview strategies to help enhance interviews and interrogations.

GPS / Instructor Rob SpeidenThis course introduces basic functions of GPS receivers and how to use them to do the following tasks: How GPS works, marking waypoints, enter coordinate and go to location, different coordinate systems, etc.

Land Navigation with Map & Compass / Instructor Rob SpeidenLearn to Proficiently Use a Map and a Compass! Having traveled on countless expeditions for recreation and as outdoor adventure leaders in addition to leading search teams looking for lost persons, our instructors are experienced in using conventional map and compass as well as new technologies for orienteering and land navigation.

Page 6: April 27-April 29 Canaan Valley Resortimages.pcmac.org/Uploads/RESA8/RESA8/Departments... · The inability to control the patient’s airway and ventilations is one of the greatest

Human Tracking Class / Instructor Rob SpeidenThe ability to find, interpret and follow tracks or sign left by human passage is an essential skill for persons interested in being attentive and responsive to occurrences in their surroundings. Natural Awareness Tracking School teaches human tracking (aka man-tracking) and signcutting skills to search and rescue, law enforcement and other government organizations.

Unusual Emergency Scenes and Rescue Situations - That is Just “Klused Up” / Instructor Tom KlusHeard the saying “Been there, Done that?” How do we stabilize, immobilize, and improvise when emergency scenes are rescue conditions are not routine? Get “Klused” as students are presented with unusual or rare rescue situations.

Rhythm Interpretation - The Rise and Fall: Reading the WavesSinus … isn’t that in the nose? Reading and understanding what‘s showing on the EKG monitor can help “The Blue Star Brigade” give better care to their patients. This basic rhythm interpretation class will offer EMS personnel a chance to practice reading and defining what they are seeing on the monitor.

Advanced Airway/CPAP - The Breath of LifeThe inability to control the patient’s airway and ventilations is one of the greatest killers in the emergency setting. Airway management can look deceptively easy in the hands of an experienced and well-trained provider. This class will explore the devices in your airway “toolbox,” recognize when would be the best situation to use any of them, and be well prepared to use them successfully when the time comes.

Current EMS Trends - Bath Salts, Chemical Suicides, and Meth Labs ... OH MY!Current Emergency Response Issues and Trends. Like Bob Dylan said, “The Times They Are A Changin”. On each call for service, unknown dangers from new drugs or trends could be waiting on responders. We must keep the motto “Everyone Goes Home” on every response.

Geriatrics/Child & Infant Care - The Last Ingredients for Medic SoupHaving trouble getting your geriatric consideration and infant and children hours? Our Chef (Instructor) will provide those last few ingredients to get ready for medic recert.

Extrication - Wickedly TwistedScenerio-based auto extrication training - wickedly twisted in a way that only the Scotts can make it. Rick and Darlene are famous for their Super Star competition set ups.  Expect the unexpected in this unique learning experience … Class space is limited to 20 participants and a team concept is recommended.
