A special way to re-member your mother or another special woman, living or deceased, is to enroll them in the St. Jus-tin Martyr Mother’s Day Novena of Masses. Begin-ning on Mother’s Day, May 10, and continuing for 9 days, the names submitted will be remembered at our Mass each of the nine days. Cards and envelopes for mothers will be available in the parish office. Envelopes were also included in the May do-nation envelope packets. If you choose to make a donation for the Novena, please mail or bring the envelope to the St. Justin office.

TODAY'S READINGS First Reading — God has raised the crucified Jesus, who now pours forth the Holy Spirit upon us (Acts 2:14, 22-33).
Psalm— Lord, you will show us the path of life (Ps 16). Second Reading — Our faith and hope are in God, who raised Jesus from the dead (1 Peter 1:17-21).
Gospel — Through his words and in the breaking of the bread, the risen Christ made himself known to two disciples on their way to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35).

GOD’S PLAN Saint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pente-cost; in the second, part of his first letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All this had to happen as part of God’s plan. General Maintenance and Repair position available at St. Justin. Full time.
There is a full time position available for a mainte-nance and repair person at St. Justin Parish. The general maintenance and repair staff will be responsible for the gen-eral upkeep of the parish facilities at St. Justin and Sacred Heart Mission. It requires knowledge of plumbing and electrical repair. It will require ordering supplies for the church, receiving deliveries, set up and take down for some events, recognizing hazards and being proactive in correct-ing them, and some outside cleaning of both properties. The person will need to be familiar with safe use of power tools and equipment. Also, the person will need to recog-nize when it is appropriate to bring in professionals for re-pairs, schedule the repair work, and ensure the work is done properly. Must have valid California Driver’s License.

St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) April 29 Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Gregory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to oth-ers the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Spiritual communion The Holy Father invites all those watching or listening to
the liturgy of the Mass to make a spiritual communion. He uses the prayer composed by St. Alphonsus di Liguori:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if you were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS God of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among us to bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world. Be with all health care workers and their assistants in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic.
As they continue Jesus’ ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit. Keep them safe from infection and illness, and may Christ’s healing presence flow through them as they serve those entrusted to their care.

From “Living through the Crisis” by Fr. Federico Lombardi, SJ Millions of people are following the moments of prayer led by Pope Francis on TV and social media. We are look-
ing for words and images that meet our expectation for consolation and comfort in times of uncertainty. The Pope’s dai-ly Masses are broadcast live and viewed by many people. Viewers are invited by him to make a “spiritual communion” because they cannot receive the Body of Christ in person. The Mass is the same, but the way one participates in it is dif-ferent. We are united by the desire to listen to a single message of salvation.
Fr. Lombardi writes: Now we see the Square absolutely empty—but the larger assembly is present spiritually, if not physically, and is perhaps even more numerous and more intensely united than on other occasions. At this time, only the Pope can be present in St. Pater’s Square, as in the Chapel of Santa Marta. However, the Church, the universal assembly of the faithful, is really and profoundly united by the very deep bonds rooted in faith and in the human heart. The Square is empty, but in its emptiness, one perceives the very intense presence and the intersection of spir-itual relationships of love, compassion, suffering, desire, expectation, hope… It is a strong sign of the Spirit’s presence, which holds together the “Mystical Body” of Christ: a spiritual reality which manifests itself when the assembly is physically united and present, but which is not bound and limited to physical presence, and paradoxi-cally, in these days, can be experienced in a stronger and more explicit way.

Ensénanos, Señor el camino de la vida, Aleluya Dos discípulos dejan Jerusalén. El episodio más amplio de los relatos pascu-
ales tiene como protagonistas dos discípulos que no pertenecen al grupo de los Doce. Esto permite al autor mostrar el camino que debe recorrerse para llegar a la fe. Pero de golpe, estos anhelos y esperanzas habían sido frustrados; todos sus sueños se hicieron añicos chocando contra la roca de la cruz levantada sobre el Monte Calvario, el Viernes Santo.
Hechos 2, 14. 22-33 El día de Pentecostés, se presentó Pedro, junto con los Once, ante la multi-
tud, y levantando la voz, dijo: “Israelitas, escúchenme. Jesús de Nazaret fue un hombre acreditado por Dios ante ustedes, mediante los milagros, prodigios y señales que Dios realizó por medio de él y que ustedes bien conocen. Conforme al plan previsto y sancionado por Dios, Jesús fue entregado, y ustedes utilizaron a los paganos para clavarlo en la cruz.
Pero Dios lo resucitó, rompiendo las ataduras de la muerte, ya que no era posible que la muerte lo retuviera bajo su dominio. En efecto, David dice, re-firiéndose a él: Yo veía constantemente al Señor delante de mí, puesto que él está a mi lado para que yo no tropiece. Por eso se alegra mi corazón y mi lengua se alboroza; por eso también mi cuerpo vivirá en la esperanza, porque tú, Señor, no me abandonarás a la muerte, ni dejarás que tu santo sufra la corrupción. Me has enseñado el sendero de la vida y me saciarás de gozo en tu presencia.
Hermanos, que me sea permitido hablarles con toda claridad: el patriarca David murió y lo enterraron, y su sepulcro se conserva entre nosotros hasta el día de hoy. Pero como era profeta y sabía que Dios le había prometido con juramento que un descendiente suyo ocuparía su trono, con visión profética habló de la res-urrección de Cristo, el cual no fue abandonado a la muerte ni sufrió la corrupción.
Pues bien, a este Jesús Dios lo resucitó, y de ello todos nosotros somos testi-gos. Llevado a los cielos por el poder de Dios, recibió del Padre el Espíritu Santo prometido a él y lo ha comunicado, como ustedes lo están viendo y oyendo’’.
1 Pedro 1, 17-21 Hermanos: Puesto que ustedes llaman Padre a Dios, que juzga imparcialmente la conducta de cada uno según sus obras, vivan siempre con temor filial durante su peregrinar por la tierra.
Bien saben ustedes que de su estéril manera de vivir, heredada de sus padres, los ha rescatado Dios, no con bienes efímeros, como el oro y la plata, sino con la sangre preciosa de Cristo, el cordero sin defecto ni mancha, al cual Dios había elegido desde antes de la creación del mundo y, por amor a ustedes, lo ha mani-festado en estos tiempos, que son los últimos. Por Cristo, ustedes creen en Dios, quien lo resucitó de entre los muertos y lo llenó de gloria, a fin de que la fe de ustedes sea también esperanza en Dios.

semejanza de aquel que todo lo puede, de aquel que es amor. Ella conoció el amor de Dios un fi n de semana en noviembre de 2009. ¡Bendito fin de semana! Ese día murió “Coco” y nació Marie N. Ramírez Pagán. ¡Coco soy yo! Es como cari-ñosamente me llama mi papá, el primer hombre que amé y amaré por el resto de mi vida.
En esos tres días “Coco” murió y experi-menté tanta felicidad al dejar ir a esa mujer vieja, porque encontré esperanza. Me enfrenté a mi propia vida, tuve que mirar hacia adentro, soltar, perdonar y comenzar a construir una nueva vida, una vida con propósito. No estoy diciendo que luego de mi encuentro con Cristo todo fue sencillo, no. Continuará…

Señor Jesús, continúa explicándonos las Es-crituras para que en-tendamos la unidad indisoluble entre Pala-bra y Eucaristía.
Santa Catalina de Siena (1347-1380) 29 de abril
Catalina, siendo la más pequeña de una familia de 24 her-manos pidió a su madre un cuarto privado para orar. Este deseo ferviente de Dios fue el hilo conductor de su vida. Siendo muy pequeña hizo del amor a Dios y a los pobres el centro de su vida. A los 16 años ingresó a la Orden Terciaria de las Dominicas llevando una vida de oración, de obras de misericordia y vivien-do recluta en su casa. Sus encuentros místicos con Dios eran frecuentes después de la comunión, pero no quería que se habla-ra de ello. También se dedicó a visitar presos y motivarlos a la conversión; en épocas de plagas se apresuraba a visitar enfer-mos, llevar comida a los pobres y a sepultar a los difuntos. Fue ella misma quien le urgió al Papa Gregorio XI que regresara a Roma, que allá estaba su lugar. En vida dictó más de 400 cartas y dos libros. En su tiempo fue vista por todos como una gran líder. Evangelio Lectura del santo evangelio según san Lucas 24, 13-35
El mismo día de la resurrección, iban dos de los discípulos hacia un pueblo llamado Emaús, situado a unos once kilómetros de Jerusalén, y comentaban todo lo que había sucedido.
Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús se les acercó y comenzó a caminar con ellos; pero los ojos de los dos discípulos estaban velados y no lo reconocieron. Él les preguntó: “¿De qué cosas vienen hablando, tan llenos de tristeza?”
Uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le respondió: “¿Eres tú el único forastero que no sabe lo que ha sucedido estos días en Jerusalén?” Él les preguntó: “¿Qué cosa?” Ellos le re-spondieron: “Lo de Jesús el nazareno, que era un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, ante Dios y ante todo el pueblo. Cómo los sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes lo en-tregaron para que lo condenaran a muerte, y lo crucificaron. Nosotros esperábamos que él sería el libertador de Israel, y sin embargo, han pasado ya tres días desde que estas cosas sucedieron. Es cierto que algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos han desconcertado, pues fueron de madrugada al sepul-cro, no encontraron el cuerpo y llegaron contando que se les habían aparecido unos ángeles, que les dijeron que estaba vivo. Algunos de nuestros compañeros fueron al sepulcro y hallaron todo como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a él no lo vieron”.
Entonces Jesús les dijo: “¡Qué insensatos son ustedes y qué duros de corazón para creer todo lo anunciado por los profetas! ¿Acaso no era necesario que el Mesías padeciera todo esto y así entrara en su gloria?” Y comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo con todos los profetas, les explicó todos los pasajes de la Escritura que se referían a él.
Ya cerca del pueblo a donde se dirigían, él hizo como que iba más lejos; pero ellos le insistieron, diciendo: “Quédate con nosotros, porque ya es tarde y pronto va a oscurecer”. Y entró para quedarse con ellos. Cuando esta-ban a la mesa, tomó un pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero él se les desapareció. Y ellos se decían el uno al otro: “¡Con razón nuestro corazón ardía, mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras!”
Se levantaron inmediatamente y regresaron a Jeru-salén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus com-pañeros, los cuales les dijeron: “De veras ha resucitado el Señor y se le ha aparecido a Simón”. Entonces ellos con-taron lo que les había pasado en el camino y cómo lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.
