MOVING THROUGH THIS NARROW PLACE, TOGETHER
The psalmist writes: Min Ha-Meitzar Karati Yah, Out of the depths, the narrow places, I call to you, Adonai (Psalm 118). For the past few weeks, it has seemed like the world has been in a very narrow place, as we have begun to individually and collectively walk through Mitzrayim, our own personal Egypts, our own narrow places. This has taken an emotion and physical toll on those directly, and indirectly affected by the COVID-19 coronavirus. As of this writing we are only in the beginning stages of seeing the disruptions that our community will be facing in the immediate future. We are only just starting to understand this “new normal,” that is forcing us to make all sorts of adjustments to our way of life – from the way that we work, to the way that we eat, shop, or gather together in sacred community (virtually) for now. But even as we make adjustments to
this challenging reality and this narrow place, let us continue to hope and pray that, we, like the children of Israel, will make it through to the other side.
What are some tips and tricks for ways to make your Passover Seders meaningful, innovative, and most importantly, safe as we feel so surrounded by this modern day plague? Here are a few suggestions.
Use online resources to connect with family and friends at the Passover Seder. While I would not normally encourage this on Passover, during these difficult days we need to do what we can to feel connected to one another. If you have family members or friends that cannot join you in person, consider calling them on the phone, connecting with them via FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, or your favorite video streaming tool during your Seder.
Take some time while you are at home (trying to get some work done) to do some Passover homework. There are literally thousands of haggadot, and hundreds of websites dedicated to making Passover fun, meaningful and memorable. Make a plan for what you would like to do at your Seder, virtually or in person. Search around the house for materials, activities.
Traditionally on Passover, we open the door to all who are hungry and in need. While we are encouraging “social distancing,” take some time to think about how your family can help others who are hungry or in need in ways that are safe while also fulfilling our obligation toward those who are vulnerable, even if we are unable to host them at our tables. Can you make food and carefully deliver it to a neighbor? Try going online to organizations such as Fullfil (https://fulfillnj.org/), Mazon, or Lunch Break to see how we can donate to those who are hungry.
Google some organizations on line such as “Hadar,” “Pardes,” or the “Jewish Theological Seminary” for some adult learning opportunities. Hadar, in particular, has some wonderful material in general, both for “learning when quarantined” and more specifically for Passover (https://www.hadar.org/learning-for-quarantine).
Check out some online resources for children such as “PJ library” or “Bim Bam” to see what offerings they have for creative Passover experiences for children.
The Ohr Ha Meir, Rabbi Zev Wolf of Zhitomyr, once taught that the true plague of darkness in the Land of Egypt occurred because “people did not see one another.” “They did not consider one another, or take to heart how much they could learn from the goodness of people around them… This led them to walk about in darkness and see no light.”
Though we find ourselves in this narrow place of mitzrayim, we must not despair. We may be walking through darkness, but all is not lost. There is still light – so much light. There are so many people helping, and working together to help humanity get through this physical, emotional, and spiritual crisis. As long as we remember to stay connected to one another (virtually, by phone, or even by handwritten letter), as long as we remember to consider one another, care for one another, appreciate one another, and tend to one another, as best we can during these challenging times, we will be able to make it through to the other side. And in so doing, I am hopeful that we will come to appreciate our newfound freedom in an entirely different way. This Passover will, no question, be different for many of us. May we discover the hidden blessings in this challenging moment, as we work to make it memorable and meaningful. May we find the strength, courage, and creativity, as individuals and as a virtually connected collective, zecher l’yetziyat mitzraym, to remember our people’s Exodus from Egypt, as we continue marching toward an unknown destination in this Exodus of our own.
Hag Kasher V’Sameach. May it be a safe, meaningful, and memorable Passover for you and your families.

for the office staff and rabbi.
All daily services, Shabbat services and yes, Pesach services, will be held via Zoom.
Adult Education, Religious School, Early Learning Center and some new and creative programming will also be making their way on to Zoom, so stay tuned to your weekly
email updates.
Please continue to check your email and our website for continuous updates. If you do
not receive our emails, please email Pam at [email protected] immediately to give us your email address.
If you are having trouble signing in to Zoom, please email Pam at [email protected]. If you are unable to connect on your computer, phone or ipad, consider using the dial in phone number and you can hear and participate in the services.
The office has a list of volunteers who are available to help those who need assistance with prescription pickup, light grocery shopping or other small errands. We also have
volunteers who are happy to chat on the phone for those who just need some company during these times of isolation. Please call Pam if you are in need of any of these
services.
Stay well. Stay safe. Stay connected.
Hello,
We are all aware of the very real and scary situation going on. Please continue to listen
to and heed the words of those who are knowledgeable and realistic, and do what we all have to do to help in any way to put an end to COVID-19 – no matter how inconvenient
that may be.
As always, our synagogue family stands with you in good times, as well as the
tumultuous times which we are now experiencing. Should anyone need assistance – groceries, pharmacy pick-up or even someone to just talk to – please reach out to the CTE office and Pam will get back to you. We have a small group of volunteers willing to
help.
I remain hopeful, and look forward to a time around the corner when we can celebrate
the safe return to communal gatherings. We will get through this together, and I can’t wait to see you all again soon!
Stay safe, stay healthy, Laurie

A huge thank you to David Wiser and Howard Lang for their expertise
and time in producing our Campaign Chair Mindy Estin’s six-month
Capital Campaign update video. We hope you enjoyed it! If you didn’t
see it, or want to watch it again, please go to the capital campaign
section of our synagogue website www.torat-el.org
Construction permits have been submitted to the township for our
new Sukkah/Patio. Meetings with the architect are underway and our
Sukkah will be completed by the holidays. A new beautiful garden will
be created once plans for the Sukkah are finalized. Thank you again to
our wonderful donors for underwriting these Campaign projects.
Naming Opportunities are Going!
Please check our website: www.torat-el.org/capitalcampaign for all
Naming Opportunities still available and consider this unique occasion
as a beautiful way to leave a lasting memory of yourself, your family
or a loved one. We will continue to mark those ‘SOLD’ so don’t wait
too long. Side pews in the Main Sanctuary are almost gone!
Our tradition teaches that we are each a link in the chain of our Jewish
heritage. Just as others built for us, so too must we build for the future.
This is our opportunity to embrace the privilege and obligation we have
to renew our spiritual home for today and tomorrow.
To make a gift, request a donor pledge form, or discuss naming
opportunities, please contact Pam Cardullo, Executive Director,
at 732-531-4410 - [email protected], or Rachel Port, Campaign
Director, at [email protected].
OUR STORY. OUR TIME: THE CAMPAIGN FOR CONGREGATION TORAT EL
Every Last Jew- One Survivor's Story
Each of us has made a promise to survivors of the Holocaust: "Never to forget." Come and join us as we hear a personal story from our very own Stuart Koperweis, whose father, Henry is a Holocaust survivor. Based on the real life events behind the recently published "Every Last Jew," Stuart will share his father's story with us, as well as the way that growing up the son of a Holocaust survivor influenced his life and worldview.
We will also take a few moments to offer some prayers, and light candles in honor of the six million who we lost in the Shoah. In these days where anti-Semitism has once again reared its ugly head in our society, it is critically important that we gather together to remember what can happen in a society filled with hatred of "the other." We invite you to join us as we gather together to hear testimony, to remember, and to gain the strength and inspiration to redouble our efforts to counter hatred and intolerance in this world.
