Welcome to the April edition of the Change the World Newsletter

We hope that you had a nice March and are enjoying the warm spring weather There are a number of

research events which will be taking place at the University of Manitoba which we are excited to share

with you

On Monday April 8th Dr David Naylor from the University of Toronto will be giving a lecture entitled

The Long Road to Precision Medicine in the Frederic Gaspard Theatre from noon to 1pm Dr Naylor has

played a central role in many Canadian health innovation projects including the establishment of the

Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Public Health Agency of Canada More information about

the lecture can be found on page 3 of the newsletter

On Friday April 12th the Department of Obstetrics Gynecology amp Reproductive Sciences will be holding

their Department Research Day with presentations on a wide variety of related topics Please see pages 4

and 5 for more information on the research day

On Friday April 24th it will be Health Professions Education Research Day on Bannatyne Campus The

Keynote Address will be given by Dr Lara Varpio in Theatre A from noon - 100pm Please see pages 6 and

7 for more information on the events taking place for Health Professions Education Research Day

Finally are you a resident who is ready to share your research with the world The Max Rady College of

Medicine Annual Resident Research Day is fast approaching The date for the Resident Research Day is

Tuesday June 4th and the competition will be taking place in Apotex 071 from 900 am - 1130 am Right

now is our call for nominations of presenters Nominations are due by Friday April 26th and more

information can be found on page 8 of the newsletter Please try to submit your nominations soon so that

we can allow the maximum amount of presenters

Call for Abstracts

Education and the learner experience is a strategic priority for the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS) To support

this priority the Health Professions Educational Research Day aims to highlight the educational research being

conducted by faculty members residents and students in the Colleges of Dentistry Medicine Nursing Pharmacy and

Rehabilitation Sciences and to provide an opportunity for educational researchers to network and further develop

their research skills

We invite educational researchers in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences to submit abstracts for oral and poster

presentations for research projects related to related to teaching and learning in the health professions from the past

two years as well as work-in-progress

Guidelines

1 Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words

2 Please include the following

Title and author names (indicate presenter in bold or italics)

Description of research problem and its relevance to teaching and learning in the health professions

Methods

Results or findings (if applicable) andor next steps

3 Please indicate whether you prefer an oral or poster presentation

Submission deadline is end of day Wednesday April 10 2019

Upon completion of this session participants will be able to

articulate their program of research in compelling and persuasive ways

identify opportunities to align ldquoservice workrdquo with scholarship and

make choices about time projects and authorship that support the development of a research profile

Making the leap from doing individual education research projects to building an education-based research program

challenges many educators Creating a profile as a health professions education researcher requires a vision a plan

to realize that vision and a set of tools to execute that plan In this workshop participants will learn how to

assemble their research ideas and projects into a coherent program Through discussions with peers and

mentorship from workshop facilitators participants will develop and present an overarching vision for their research

program They will then craft a plan for realizing that vision including critically mining clinical administrative or

teaching components of their current work for their potential to generate scholarship aligned with their vision A

series of interactive activities will offer tools that can support developing a compelling research profile

Dr Lara Varpio is Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Research for the

Health Professions Education graduate degree programs at the Uniformed Services

University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Dr Varpiorsquos research uses qualitative

methodologies and methods integrated with theories from the Social Sciences and

Humanities to investigate questions relating to how individuals (eg clinicians

patients researchers etc) collaborate and perform in teams and organizations

Upon completion of this session participants will be able to

articulate their program of research in compelling and persuasive ways

identify opportunities to align ldquoservice workrdquo with scholarship and

make choices about time projects and authorship that support the development of a research profile

Making the leap from doing individual education research projects to building an education-based research program

challenges many educators Creating a profile as a health professions education researcher requires a vision a plan

to realize that vision and a set of tools to execute that plan In this workshop participants will learn how to

assemble their research ideas and projects into a coherent program Through discussions with peers and

mentorship from workshop facilitators participants will develop and present an overarching vision for their research

program They will then craft a plan for realizing that vision including critically mining clinical administrative or

teaching components of their current work for their potential to generate scholarship aligned with their vision A

series of interactive activities will offer tools that can support developing a compelling research profile

Dr Lara Varpio is Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Research for the

Health Professions Education graduate degree programs at the Uniformed Services

University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Dr Varpiorsquos research uses qualitative

methodologies and methods integrated with theories from the Social Sciences and

Humanities to investigate questions relating to how individuals (eg clinicians

patients researchers etc) collaborate and perform in teams and organizations

Call for Abstracts

Education and the learner experience is a strategic priority for the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS) To support

this priority the Health Professions Educational Research Day aims to highlight the educational research being

conducted by faculty members residents and students in the Colleges of Dentistry Medicine Nursing Pharmacy and

Rehabilitation Sciences and to provide an opportunity for educational researchers to network and further develop

their research skills

We invite educational researchers in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences to submit abstracts for oral and poster

presentations for research projects related to related to teaching and learning in the health professions from the past

two years as well as work-in-progress

Guidelines

1 Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words

2 Please include the following

Title and author names (indicate presenter in bold or italics)

Description of research problem and its relevance to teaching and learning in the health professions

Methods

Results or findings (if applicable) andor next steps

3 Please indicate whether you prefer an oral or poster presentation
