    Discovery Ridge Tennis League

Are you a tennis player interested in playing in a neighborhood league starting this spring? To make it easier to find someone of similar ability with whom to play, I am organizing a social tennis league for Discovery Ridge. I used to live in the Wimbledon area of England and I am using a format that we used successfully there. The league will be for anyone 15 years of age or older. Ideally you would play 5-7 games during the Summer Season. Depending upon weather, we will hold a Pre-Season from April 15- May 15 where you would likely play 2-4 games.

    Here is the proposed schedule.

The League fee is $25 per season to cover prizes and admin. If you register by Wednesday, April, 12, this $25 will cover both the Pre-Season and Summer Season. Please complete the form below and return to me at [email protected]. I will then organize the groups by ability. For more information and rules, see https://goo.gl/5hDaAV. If you still have questions you can email me. DRCA membership is required to play. If you have a friend outside of the neighborhood who would like to join you, he or she simply needs to get an annual $25 DRCA membership by visiting discoveryridge.com ➛ memberships. ~ Cathy Clonts, Discovery Ridge Resident

Dog owners please take note!Responsible dog ownership is an important part of maintaining a happy, healthy dog and avoiding dog-related disputes with your neighbours. Part of being a responsible dog owner is complying with Calgary’s bylaws related to dogs. There are 150 Off Leash Dog Park locations in Calgary. Griffith Woods and the Discovery Ridge community is not one of them so please keep your dog on a leash at ALL TIMES.

As a dog owner, you must ensure your dog does not:

    • Bite anyone• Injure anyone• Chase, threaten or attack a person or animal• Bark, howl or disturb anyone• Cause damage to property or animals• Scatter garbage

While on a pathway, your dog must:

    • Be on a leash no longer than two metres• Remain on the right hand side of the pathway• Not interfere with or obstruct other users• You may not cycle, skateboard or in-line skate with a dog on a leash while on a pathway.

how to file a complaint and what happens to itIf you know of a bylaw infraction and would like to report it, please call 311 (from within Calgary) or 403.268.CITY (2489) (from outside Calgary).

Typically the first Monday of every month. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in attending. All DRCA members are welcome!

Question of the MonthI’m interested in getting more involved with our community but not sure how to proceed? Should I come to a DRCA Board meeting or is it better find a committee to help out with? I don’t have a ton of time but would like to contribute in some way and get to know my neighbours at the same time.

ANSWER:We would love to have you involved! Thanks for your question. That is a much more pleasant one to respond to than last month’s!

The good news is that there are lots of different ways to get involved in Discovery.

#1 We have a Volunteer Database that we use to send out requests for specific activities and volunteer roles we need filled. For example, helping out from 9-11 a.m. at the Community Clean-up or serving cookies at the New Years Day Skate.

To add your name to the database simply email [email protected] and the next time we do a call out for volunteers, you’ll at least get to see if it works into your schedule and if it’s something you’re able to assist with.

#2 Email one of the Committee Chairs (listed in each month’s Ridge Review) to see if they are meeting and see if you can attend. This is a great way to actually get to know others. Keep an eye out for requests for Committee Volunteers in the Ridge Review as well.

#3 If you really want to get a great overall exposure of what the entire DRCA does please join us at a monthly Board meeting. They are usually held in a member’s home so just email [email protected] to get the details. We’d love to see you there.

#4 Bottle Shack – We have a dedicated group that take weekly turns shifting the bottles around to make room for more and we also do a call out to empty it when it’s full. Again, email [email protected] to be added to this list.

Remember that we are in the same boat as you and very busy - juggling careers, managing other volunteer commitments and driving kids every which way! If everyone pitches in it makes for a better community and place to live. Thanks for the question!

Griffith Woods School construction is progressing and Rhonda Choate has been selected as the new principal. Rhonda is presently the principal of Killarney School and has an outstanding reputation. She is a strong advocate for all children and has high expectations for teaching quality. Jennie Elliott School students living in Discovery Woods will be automatically transferred before the anticipated opening in September. The new schools are beautifully designed with students in mind. Jennie Elliott School is projected to have 441 students next year. The upside is we will have more room; the downside is some of our staff will have to find new schools to work their magic in.

Our residencies continue to evolve and we are thankful for school council’s financial support. This year we have a number of offerings. The overarching theme is Community; How Do We Connect? Kindergarten and Grade 4 are working with artist Henry Hama exploring 3D structures, Grade 1 is working with Sarah the naturalist who is using expressive fine arts to explore and share ideas. Grade 2 is working with Henry the artist and Joanne the dancer as they explore First Nations art. Grade 3 is working with Rocky the dancer and Henry the artist as they explore hip hop and graffiti art. Grades 5/6 are working with Rocky as they meld art, dance, and drama together connecting the themes of kindness, dignity, empathy, respect and love. Those are the elements of the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

We recently passed a third party health and safety audit (COR) and wrapped up inline skating. Everybody is looking forward to spring.

    Community Civic Chat

Calgary Signal hill April Community MessageLast October, Alberta Conservative Members of Parliament launched the Alberta Jobs Taskforce to deal with the jobs crisis in the province. Alberta’s unemployment rate rose from 4.6 % to 8.8 % in the last 18 months with Calgary having one of the highest rates in Canada at over 10 %. The result has been a spike in the incidence of crime and its severity as well as family violence.

The objectives of the Task Force were two fold. First, listen to Albertans, employers, workers, families and other stakeholders affected by the job crisis and collect their feedback and ideas. Second, to collate that information into a report containing recommendations and in a few instances budget requests of the Liberal Government.

The Calgary Signal Hill riding partnered with Calgary Confederation and Calgary Centre hosting a round table discussion followed by an open meeting where constituents brought forward their ideas and suggestions. Calgary Signal Hill constituents also were given the opportunity to participate by an email survey and close to 2,000 responded.

here are some of the task force’s recommendations:

    • Elimination of the federal carbon tax• Reduction of the small business tax rate• Reversing the mandatory increase on CPP premiums• Respecting the non-partisan decisions of the National Energy Board with respect

to the construction of new pipelines• Investments in programs and opportunities to enhance youth employment in

Alberta• Reviewing the equalization payment formula• Advocating for Canadian resources and Canadian industry abroad• Provide a clear plan to bring the federal budget back into balance

I am very proud to support the report and present it on behalf of the residents of Calgary Signal Hill and thank you for the input. To access the complete report, please go to http://albertajobstaskforce.ca/en/ or to request a copy of the report please call my office at 403 292-6666.

Get outside and enjoy your community!

As the seasons change, now is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the amazing spaces we have in our communities. Here are some of my favourite parks in the Ward 6 area that you can visit:Griffith Woods Park The Elbow River flows unimpeded through this beautiful park in Discovery Ridge. Seldom can one experience a "wild river" within a major city. The curves in this part of the river has left “oxbow” wetlands, with a rich variety of aquatic ecosystems, along with one of only two large strands of White Spruce in The City’s park system.

Strathcona RavineTucked away between the Strathcona and Christie Park communities, these 23 hectares of ravines were set aside as an environmental reserve during the 1970s. The boardwalk at the west end crosses a seasonal stream and wetland, and is an excellent area for birdwatching. If you want to experience a classic ravine in the wilds of Calgary, this natural gem is the park to visit.

Battalion ParkOriginally a World War 1 training camp known as Camp Sarcee in 1915, this Signal Hill park was built to commemorate the Alberta soldiers who trained here. 16,000 stones were placed here by members of the Calgary, Lethbridge, Central Alberta, and Edmonton battalions, and were formed into their regiment numbers: 137, 113, 151, and 51. Along with its historical significance, the park includes great views, pathways, and of course, shopping opportunities in Westhills afterwards. For more information, visit Calgary.ca/parks

Want to send your kids on an action-packed nature adventure this summer? Calgary Parks is offering Nature Day Camps in July and August, connecting children with the natural world through hands-on activities and outdoor play. Guided by experienced educators, campers will explore bugs, birds, plants and animals while gaining a better understanding of nature and their place within it. Choose from Growing Wild (4-5 years), Wild for Wetlands (6-9 years), Winged Wonders (6-9 years), and Raptors Delight (10-12 years). Camps take place in the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Ralph Klein Park, and childcare is available before and after. Registration is now open.

For more information, search “Nature Day Camps” at calgary.ca

DR “Old Guys” to run in kenya May 14th!'Old Guys' Update

Discovery Ridge’s Old Guys in Action are…well…in action again. No grilled cheese; no jumping into frozen ponds. This time they are helping to organize an international running event in Kenya in support of Mully Children’s Family…and they are encouraging runners in the neighbourhood (and across Canada) to join them in the 5K, 10K or half marathon on May 14th in Ndalani, Kenya.

According to Old Guy co-founder Bernie Potvin, Charles Mulli was abandoned by his family in a remote Kenyan village at the age of 6. After years of struggle he started a small taxi business, then other businesses, eventually becoming a millionaire. At the peak of his career Charles gave it all away and began to bring orphan street children into his home. Twenty-five years later he has adopted over 10,000 children and literally has the biggest family in the world. A man with a grade 6 education runs some of the top schools in Africa and has been awarded two honorary PhDs.

“When Bernie introduced me to Charles almost 10 years ago now, we decided we needed to something significant to help his work. Being runners, we’ve been dreaming and scheming of a major fundraising run ever since”, says Ross Weaver, the other co-founder of OGIA. “We’ve been over to Kenya to see Charles, his work, his immense family…and to do planning runs…on several occasions. What Charles has accomplished in transforming children’s lives is nothing short of miraculous.”

Proceeds of the Mully Marathon will provide assistance to financially needy, academically qualified students so they can attend Mully University College. It’s a cause that resonates with Potvin, a recently retired Dean of Education. “This event will change Africa, one student at a time”, he says. “We anticipate that the Mully Marathon will become a major internationally sanctioned annual event and fundraiser, attracting runners from around the world. And you can be part of it!”

For more information on joining the run or supporting the Old Guys in their run, visit www.oldguysinaction.com and www.mullymarathon.com.

Thank you for participating!I want to thank the many of you that participated in my pre-budget consultation. Whether your concerns are for the economy, healthcare, education, or any others, I appreciate you taking the time to share them with me. Your feedback helps us as MLAs frame our advice prior to the release of the budget and our feedback to the Minister of Finance after the budget is released. If you haven’t already done so you can view the survey results on my website, www.WEBURL.com.

The budget release always gives us a moment, as MLAs, to pause and really evaluate if our work in Government is offering a net benefit to Albertans. I always seek new ways to put more money in the pockets of Alberta families through tax reductions, and to ensure that those services we rely on as Albertans are funded in a fashion that allows for the excellent service we have come to expect.

There is no doubt that the Minister of Finance will face many challenges in drafting this budget. Mounting debt represents a serious issue for our province – an issue that we will pass along to the next generation. As I watch my own children grow, the thought of passing them a mounting debt is one that troubles me. Be that as it may, we continue to press forward as an Opposition to ensure that the voices of our constituents – you – are heard.

Thank you again for your continued feedback.~Mike Ellis, MLA

    NDHA Update

    homeowners’ Association News

As the winter season draws to a close, our main priority will shift from pathway snow clearing to spring clean-up of the greenspaces as the weather dictates. Mother Nature gives us all manner of precipitation and temperatures at this time of the year and ice can form unexpectedly. Use caution and don’t hesitate to contact us if you find an area that needs attention.

The NDHA Board members have been working on the 2017/18 budget and will use it to establish what projects can be completed this growing season. The “to-do” list is always long, but we will balance new projects with rejuvenation projects to keep our community green spaces as outstanding as ever.

BLACk kNOT TREE FUNGUS – PRUNE IT OUT! If you look at your trees right now and you see a dark, lumpy mass clinging to any of the branches, you probably have a tree infested with Black Knot Fungus. This fungus affects Mayday, Chokecherry and other stone fruit trees. For the long term survival of your infected tree, it is best to have it pruned out. Black Knot Fungus is spread by spores from within the lumpy mass; specific procedures when pruning must be followed to reduce further contamination. Pruning while the tree is dormant (no leaves), is best for success. The City of Calgary prunes out Black Knot Fungus from trees on public property within our community; please help to control this scourge and potentially save your own tree(s) by doing the same. Consider your safety; hiring a professional certified arborist may be the best plan but they book up quickly so you will want to make contact soon to reserve an appointment. More information on Black knot can be found on the City’s website under “City of Calgary – Black knot Fungus”.

RACCOON ALERT! As cute as they are, raccoons are nocturnal pests that can carry diseases capable of being transmitted to humans and pets, and they do frequent our community. They can cause property damage and have been known to attack when threatened; they are quite capable of killing cats and small dogs. Homeowners are advised to take steps to ensure raccoons are not attracted to your property. Bird feeders are targeted by these animals, but any food will do, including garbage or pet food left outside. Unusual levels of consumption of bird seed/pet food, or the presence in ornamental foliage beds and even window wells of something that looks like cat scat, but with berries and seeds in it, may indicate raccoons. Bird feeders can be “raccoon-proofed”; many methods can be found online. Please eliminate attractants in and around your property as soon as possible, for everyone’s sake.

RING ROAD CONSTRUCTION WORk at our entrance area will soon ramp up; we will post updates on our website as they become available. The NDHA and the DRCA continue to work hard to protect the interests of Discovery Ridge but many community issues associated with this project remain unresolved. It is important that all residents of Discovery Ridge take time to engage in this process. There is ‘strength in numbers’. Concerns and questions can be emailed to the NDHA and/or the DRCA, but more importantly, to our MLA Mike Ellis at [email protected], our City of Calgary Ward 6 Councillor Richard Pootmans at [email protected], and to the ring road team at [email protected]

To receive updates on ring road developments beyond the landscaping issues at our entrance, the NDHA strongly encourages all residents to support the DRCA by purchasing a $25/year COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION membership. Your email address can then be registered, allowing for regular updates directly to your inbox. Please visit www.discoveryridge.com The DRCA IS YOUR RING ROAD VOICE – please help them out!

We are always happy to hear from our NDHA members; please access our website at www.ndha.ca for NDHA News updates or to send an email - you can also call us at 403.237.9595.
