Welcome to the April edi0on of The Guide.
Well, the clocked have changed and spring is well and truly
here. I am looking forward to the warm days to come - it
seems to have been quite grey lately, not least the day of the
solar eclipse - I was disappointed not to be able to see it.
Were you luckier?
The next few months in Haslemere promise to be ac0on
packed star0ng with Easter, just round the corner. Haslemere
Museum have a day of children’s arts and cra: ac0vi0es for
Easter, including a garden trail with chocolate treats, but
hurry, there are only a few days le: to book your place. See
page 28 for more informa0on.
The last fortnight of May sees the 6th Haslemere Fes0val with
over 55 events to 0ckle every taste bud, not forgeAng the
ever-popular classic car show. For the full programme go to
www. haslemerefes0val.org.uk.
We have a new contributor this month in one of our local IFAs
Graham Co/on. There have been many changes to pension
legisla0on in the last year and for some of us, it can all be
very confusing. If you need someone to sort out your
paperwork and help you plan your re0rement, I can
recommend Graham. See page 10 for more informa0on.
May and June are busy months for students as it is exam 0me.
Maybe you suffer with exam nerves - well we all do to some
extent - but some more than others. If that is you, see the
ar0cle on page 24. Richard Morley might be able to help.
This month we also have the Haslemere Town Council spring
newsle/er on page 18. Please do take the 0me to read it.
In the mean0me, enjoy the spring sunshine and birdsong.

Probate is defined as the court process by
which a Will is proved valid or invalid. In fact
when most people use the word ‘probate’
they mean the whole process of discovering
the value of someone’s assets, going through
the legal process of gaining authority to deal
with it, paying off any debts and finally
distribu0ng the remainder to the
beneficiaries.
If a person has died leaving a Will and assets
of more than £20,000, then the Executors of
the Will usually have to apply for a Grant of
Probate in order to administer the estate.
Un0l the Grant of Probate has been obtained,
the Executors cannot sell or deal with any of
the deceased’s assets or distribute the estate
between the deceased’s chosen beneficiaries.
If no Will was made, then the deceased is
said to have died Intestate. An Administrator
will need to undertake the role of finalising
the deceased’s affairs and this will o:en be a
close rela0ve. Instead of a Grant of Probate,
the Administrator has to apply for a Grant of
Le/ers of Administra0on. In such a case, the
rules of intestacy will apply and the
deceased’s estate must be distributed in
accordance with those rules.
Applying for a Grant does not have to be
done through a solicitor but it is usually
quicker and does not involve a Court
interview. O:en it is the person who is
bereaved who is named as Executor or
Administrator and at such a 0me dealing with
the deceased's affairs can be
extremely stressful. It can be helpful if an
objec0ve professional deals with the
administra0on of the estate especially when
bereaved family members do not get on.
The role of the Executor or Administrator can
be an onerous one. It is their responsibility
to take charge of all the assets of the
deceased on behalf of the beneficiaries of
the estate. They are fully accountable to the
beneficiaries for their ac0ons and can be held
personally and financially responsible for loss
suffered to the estate.
It has been reported that court ba/les
where an Executor of a Will is accused of
mishandling an estate have trebled in the
past 12 months. The rise is largely down to
an increase in the number of people
appoin0ng friends and family members as
Executors.
Many people name a firm of solicitors as
Executor and at Couchman Hanson we are
experts in dealing with estates and
understand the processes and paperwork
involved.
Alterna0vely, we can
provide Executors and
Administrators with
the necessary guid-
ance to perform this
role.
If you would like
further advice about
probate please get in
touch.

Pensions? Investments? Inheritance
Tax Planning? Now more than ever,
understanding how to provide for your
future is vital, but is it all a bit of a
mystery to you? Local IFA Graham
Co:on can help.
Graham Co/on is a locally based
Independent Financial Adviser. He has
been in the financial services industry
since 1990, and having worked with a
firm of Chartered Accountants in Chichester for 12
years he moved to MAP Financial Ltd in Liphook in
May 2013. As a directly authorised financial
adviser, Graham is regulated by the Financial
Conduct Authority (FCA) and he specialises in
pensions, investments and inheritance tax planning.
In order to give the best possible service he would
first spend 0me reviewing clients’ exis0ng plans and
benefits, before giving tax planning and pension
advice.
There have been many changes to pension
legisla0on over the past nine years with further
wide-ranging changes due a:er 6th April 2015.
A:er the 2014 Budget, changes to the pension tax
rules gave individuals greater flexibility to access
their Defined Contribu0on (DC) pension savings
which will take effect from 6th April 2015. The
op0ons for what to do with our pension funds has
never been so open to us. If you are aged 55 or over
on 6th April this year, you should immediately be
able to take advantage of the increased flexibility in
pension legisla0on. Do you feel ready for how
these reforms could affect you now or in the future
to enable you to make the right decisions?
Obtaining professional advice is essen0al to make
sure you get an informed analysis of your par0cular
situa0on. Graham’s in-depth knowledge of the
industry could help you to make use of the various
schemes available including ISA allowances,
Capital Gains Tax allowances, pension allowances,
gi:s, Venture Capital Trusts and Business Property
Relief.
MAP Financial Ltd publish a magazine three 0mes a
year available at the 0me of the Spring Budget, the
Autumn Budget and New Year. If you
would like a copy of the current
magazine, please contact Graham on
07887 576698 or email
This is a case study of a client who
approached Graham last year:
Our client received a pile of pension
paperwork about which he knew lile.
Following a review we discovered he had
four pensions and each different pension provider
needed him to make a decision on taking
benefits. For our client it was all extremely
confusing. Fortunately he sought financial
advice.
Following an inial meeng, we determined some
potenal opons taking into account his
circumstances and objecves. The providers were
asked to clarify the benefit detail and opons
available. The client was very surprised at the
flexibility afforded to him taking into account the
pension rule changes from 2014 and the
potenal changes for 2015. He did not realise
that he could only take the benefit of one of his
pensions as a tax free lump sum. This fund was
not accruing any further benefit, interest or
growth and was being eroded by inflaon. By
seeking this advice the client was then able to use
new rules to his advantage. It enables him to
increase his exisng income as and when he
needs it rather than the restricve benefits being
imposed upon him by the current scheme.
The new pension rules will provide much wider
choice for those building up their pension funds
and considering what to do with their rerement
planning.
Those of you who have keen young
football players in the family may already know
Graham from his work with the very
popular and successful junior sec0on of Beacon
Hill Football Club. Graham gives many hours of
his 0me coaching the U14 Chargers. He says this
is his form of relaxa0on!

Ilio Tibial Band (ITB) Syndrome Well, it’s that me of year when we start seeing
lots of intrepid runners pounding the streets in
preparaon for either the Paris, Brighton or
London Marathons and the rest of us mere
mortals are leF feeling woefully inadequate but
secretly thinking “I’m sure I could do it if I put my
mind to it”.
Reality is however that marathon training is harsh,
but careful prepara0on will not only allow
individual runners to avoid injury and perform to
the best of their ability but also enjoy the day
(‘enjoy’ being a rela0ve term of course!). One of
the common problems that runners can suffer with
is pain on the outside of the knee which can be
due to Ilio-Tibial Band Syndrome. Pain is
classically felt on the outside of the knee and can
occur during or a:er running. There may also be
some associated swelling over the outside of the
knee joint and it may be s0ff in the mornings. It is
caused when a fibrous band called the Ilio-Tibial
Band, rubs over the bones on the side of the knee
during ac0vity and gets inflamed. Most commonly
it occurs in runners as running is a repe00ve,
straight line ac0on and the ITB is subjected to the
same load over and over again, however, it can
occur in other ac0vi0es that involve a lot of knee
bending.
When ITB pain is acute, you should immediately
rest from your ac0vity, apply ice and allow your
ITB to se/le down. Stretching of 0ght leg muscles
and treatments to loosen the outside of your
thigh, massage or foam roller, can also help. Once
your symptoms se/le you should consider if there
are any of the factors that could have predisposed
to you suffering in the first place. These include:
• Bad, old or “not fit for purpose” running shoes -
make sure you have good, appropriate running
shoes with advice from a specialist running shop.
• Weakness and/or 0ghtness in lower limb
muscles on the affected side
• Too much too soon - be careful to increase
training schedules slowly, rapid increases in load
can cause ITB overload
• Avoid too much uphill or downhill running
• If you run on the same roads, run in the opposite
direc0on some0mes so the camber will be
different.
• Make sure you warm up and cool down properly
• If your symptoms persist, you should speak to
your GP or Physiotherapist who will be able to
advise you how to manage and treat this
problem.
If you have any queries about ITB syndrome or
any other problems related to running injuries,
please contact the Physiotherapy Team at
Healthflex Haslemere who will be happy to help
you.

that overgrown vegeta0on has been cleared

Separa0ng is never easy. There are invariably lots of prac0cal issues to consider, ranging from the future of the former family home to the living arrange-ments for the children. However, the most complex element to most separa0ons is dealing with the emo0onal fallout.
Some0mes, both people have reached the point where they accept that the rela0onship is over and where they just want to sit down together, ideally in media0on, and sort out all the prac0cal issues, but it is far more common for there to be at least one person who is not ready to move forwards.
This might be because one party feels that there is s0ll a future to the rela0on-ship and is therefore looking for any opportunity to consider reconcilia0on or to block the a/empts of the other person to take steps to formalise the separa0on.
Alterna0vely, there might be one person who is very angry or upset about what the other person has done, whether this be as the result of an affair or as a result of trying to deal with feelings of fear and rejec0on. This might lead to a desire to inflict as much damage as possible on the other person, under the belief that a/acking them will somehow either bring about a sense of sa0sfac0on or revenge or even result in the aggressor taking the lion’s share of the assets or spending more 0me with the children.
The end result is that most separa0ons are poten0ally very vola0le situa0ons, with it just taking one person, whether it be one of the par0es themselves, or a family member, or a legal adviser, to light the match and watch the fire burn and the destruc0on unfold.
The reality is that it is almost inevitable that, when a separa0on or divorce becomes acrimonious, everyone is damaged, including the children. It takes a much braver and wiser person to realise that the most sensible and effec0ve way to resolve a dispute is to sit around the table and look for the mutually beneficial solu0ons and anyone who turns their back on doing this, or who advises their client to walk away from this, is in danger of sentencing everyone directly involved to a long, unpleasant and expensive ba/le that never really has any winners, just losers, and that might take a great deal of 0me to recover from, with some people never fully recovering.
If you or someone you know is going through a separa0on, please think very carefully before saying or doing anything that might escalate the conflict or lead to ba/le lines being drawn and instead encourage everyone to work together to find amicable solu0ons. The first step on this journey is to contact a mediator!
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to know more about the mediaon process and remember that it is never too late to mediate
Separang? There is no need to start a ba:le! By Euan Davidson

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy
Exam nerves can affect anyone, even the
most prepared and diligent student. And yet
there are others who manage to feel calm
going into an exam and enjoy the opportunity
to show what they can do.
Miriam was a bright student. She had done
well up to 6th form but when she got to
university—found that her self confidence
began to go, her ability to concentrate began
to suffer and these feelings were reflected in
her poor results.
Peter was so stressed out that he began
having panic a/acks and was unable to go to
school at all.
Katherine made it into her exams an then felt
so unwell that she fainted and could not
complete the paper.
To do one's best it is important to eat the
right foods, have enough sleep and take
enough exercise. All these things impact on
the ability to perform. They are o:en the
things that get disregarded in the run up to
an exam.
At least as important, if not more so, is having
the op0mal mental approach both when
learning and revising as well as when actually
siAng the exam.
I taught Miriam, Peter and Katherine some
important life skills using hypnotherapy.
These skills were embedded because they
also learnt self-hypnosis so that they could:
▪ Control their emo0ons
▪ Visualise success rather than failure
▪ Efficiently store and recall informa0on
▪ Build self belief and mo0va0on
▪ Put the exam into perspec0ve.
In each case they felt much more confident
about their ability to deal with whatever
might come up. They were able to perform
to their full poten0al.
If the larder is empty then crea0ng a nice
meal is difficult. Similarly, anyone needing
help to prepare for exams will get the most
benefit by learning these skills during learning
and before the main revision starts in
earnest.
Richard Morley is a locally based clinical
hypnotherapist. He is an approved

April is the 0me for being fooled and there’s nothing like a bit of magic to
turn you into an unwiAng mark. With their wizardry and secret socie0es,
magicians have been holding us spellbound for years. The illusions are
permea0ng the pages and here are some novels where a touch of trickery
has ensured a page-turner.
Prac0cally Magic
Praccal Magic - Alice Hoffman When the whole town’s been against you for two hundred years, you might want to think about moving. The genera0ons of Owens women though, who get the blame for everything that goes wrong in the town, seem to revel in the powers of witchcra: the locals think they wield. All that is, except for sisters Gillian and Sally, who want nothing more than to break the cycle and escape, one way or another. But having magic running through your veins is a hard thing to pull against, and 0me and 0me again they are drawn back to each other.
Like Water for Chocolate - Laura Esquivel They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and that’s certainly the case when you’ve got a secret ingredient of magic to throw into the mix. The story is set in Mexico at the turn of the century and focuses on the De La Garza family. Tita, as the youngest member of the all-female household, must abide by Mexican tradi0on and look a:er their
mother un0l she dies. She is forbidden to marry but falls in love with Pedro and her seduc0on takes the form of her magical dishes. But, the path of true love never did run smooth and he marries her sister instead. Of course, the story doesn’t quite end there.
The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern Le Cirque des Rêves (The Circus of Dreams) only comes alive between dusk and dawn, disappearing from view as the sunlight emerges. Set in Victorian London this is a real treat of a novel, touched by fairytale and sure to hold you spellbound. You never quite know when or where the circus is going to appear, as if from nowhere, with its ice gardens and cloud maze and whirling, twirling acrobats of the night. A few know the secret of the circus and have formed their own magic circle, so to speak. It’s a wonderful, slightly surreal and other-worldly experience wrapped up in a book.

One in three people die without a Will.
This can cause addional tax problems
and oFen family disputes as well.
DIY Wills may have been a quick soluon
at the me but they do not usually
provide the most tax effecve soluon.
Without a Will:
• A surviving spouse may not inherit
everything.
• A co-habitant has no inheritance rights.
• A beneficiary may lose State benefits.
• Minor children are taken into care.
• The way the State distributes your assets
might not be what you would have liked.
A Will can achieve all of the following:
• Minimise tax.
• Ensure that minor children are looked a:er
by your appointed guardians.
• Ensure that a young person does not
inherit at the age of 18.
• Ensure that your spouse has enough to live
on but that your assets do not get
swallowed up in Care fees.
• Ensure that your partner is provided for but
your children inherit ul0mately.
• Protect your assets from your children’s
divorces or business insolvencies.
A well wri:en Will can achieve so much and is
not a recurring cost
LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAs) These are essen0al documents designed to
protect YOUR interests during your life0me.
We should all have them because no one is
immune to illness or accident.
They are the best insurance you can have.
Do you travel a lot? Do you enjoy hazardous
sports? Do you run a business?
If misfortune strikes and there are no LPAs in
place, your spouse or other rela0ve cannot run
your affairs for you. Even a joint account can
be frozen. The alterna0ve to LPAs is an
applica0on to the Court of Protec0on. This is
complex and expensive. It is best to have LPAs
in place.
The LPA for Health and Welfare enables
decisions to be made by your chosen
representa0ve rather that the State.
Shaws Wills
We meet with you in informal surroundings
and we spend a lot of me making sure that
we get everything right and you are happy.
We believe in plain English.
We advise on the most tax effecve soluons.
Our clients tell us that the experience has
been a pleasant one and they are happy they
have the documents in place.
Have you been meaning to write or update your Will?

Looking after birds in your
garden
Transform Landscapes
01428 652222
www.transformlandscapes.co.uk
Compared to last year which was so wet but
rela0vely warm, and spring came early, we
have had some prolonged spells of cold
weather with some sharp frosts . At this 0me
of year, you will see many different birds
coming into the garden while they a/empt to
find some shelter. They will also be looking
for the extra food that is available in the
garden whilst the pickings in the countryside
are s0ll scarce.
For all of those people that have shrubs
bearing berries, such as cotoneaster,
pyracantha, berberis and rowan (which is a
par0cular favourite of the Waxwing which will
soon be heading back to Scandinavia), these
berries are an essen0al food source to the
birds un0l the ground so:ens enough for
them to be able to encourage worms to the
surface and un0l the number of insects
increases. The berries won’t last long and
soon they will be looking for other food
sources within the garden and this is where
you can help by puAng your food scraps out
for them and making sure your feeders are
well stocked with the correct feed to help
them get through to the spring.
Some of the smaller birds, such as gold crests
and blue 0ts, have to feed con0nually
throughout the daylight hours and consume
up to 30% of their body weight to help them
through the colder weather. Foods which are
high in fat and energy, such as suet,
sunflower hearts, peanuts and fat balls, are
essen0al for these pre/y li/le birds. It’s
always best to put your feeders at different
heights to a/ract different birds, but be
cau0ous of where you place the feeders to
keep the birds safe from predators. It is also
very important to clean feeders now and
again to prevent transmission of diseases.
Please also remember that water is essen0al
both for drinking and also for bathing to
keep feathers clean.
Now, as spring is on the way, it is also 0me to
get your nest boxes cleaned out from last
year by removing any old shells and nest
remnants. When taking on this task,
remember to wear gloves and a mask as
there could be fungi growing inside that can
cause respiratory infec0ons, not to men0on
a host of certain parasites. You should be
puAng up the nest boxes now so that the
birds will get used to them being in the gar-
den and be keen to use them when the 0me
is right. Again, think about placement of next
boxes to keep the birds and their young safe
from predators.
Once you have done all you can to help your
garden birds, sit back and enjoy your winged
friends visi0ng the garden and making use of
all your hard work – and very rewarding it is
too.
