President Dr. Bill Holda

Although it seems as though we just began the semester, this term is rapidly coming to a close. I hope the semester has been good for you.

As we wind down the spring semester, I wanted to share some information with you and keep you up-to-date.

If we have responses to the Request for Proposals to renovate the library and mall area, we hope to be able to recommend a construction manager to the Board in April. We hope to get all of that work completed by the end of the fall semester.

Many folks have spent numerous hours on the conversion from Poise to Jenzabar EX and we hope to make the actual conversion the second week of June. Coming up shortly, there will be a great deal of intense training for all employees, so that everyone can use the updated software.

We are also installing some products developed by Civitas Learning that should help us “turn the lights on” regarding much of our student progress and challenges, as well as eventually having some applications for staff and students that help map their degree progress and also give us a “hot map” for each class to identify students needing some intervention.

We have a board of trustees election on the second Saturday in May, which is May 9.

We have two contested elections: one between Karol Pruett and Joe White (if you live within the Kilgore ISD boundaries), and a second election between James Walker and Jimmie Dunnaway (if you live within the Gladewater, White Oak or Sabine ISD boundaries).

Elections have consequences and I strongly encourage each of you who live within one of those four ISD’s to vote, make a difference, and fulfill your civic responsibility.

The Texas Legislature is in session and at this point, neither the House nor Senate budget proposals have been encouraging.

Although I have not been as involved in the process this session, I have advocated with our local legislators on behalf of Kilgore College.

At this point, the House version would have us losing about $550,000 for each year of the biennium.

Naturally, as we try to meet increased expenditures for salary, benefits, and the cost of providing service to our students, the summer budget process will be presenting challenges once again.

Again, I wish you a great finish to the spring semester and hope that you continue to stay dedicated to student

success!

Practices,” included five instructors sharing models of course redesign and how it has provided the basis for new initiatives.

Heidi Everett, TRIO learning specialist, and Bindy Tice, TRIO director, attended the Texas Association of Student Support Service Personnel conference March 1-4 in Fort Worth and presented “Best Practices of Non-Cognitive Skill Development within TRIO Programs.” Also, KC TRIO alum Marvyn White

was the keynote speaker at the opening plenary for the conference. Jude Dubois and Lakendra Woods also attended the conference for KC Upward Bound.
