Wow! This past year’s winter was about a month or so late in its arrival, but when it came, it came with great gusto! The good news, of course, is we are so close to spring we can see it and taste it! The psalmist put it this way: “Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30: 5b). We may experience difficult nights, stress, strain, and some pain, but when the morning comes, there is joy. The psalmist, of course, is speaking metaphori- cally, but we cannot miss the point. With God, death becomes life, despair will lead to hope, winter will give way to three other delightful seasons, and the dawn will break right after the darkest part of the night (early morning). On Thursday evening, April 2nd, we will gather in the sanctuary for a Maundy Thursday Service whereby we recall the “Last Supper.” On Good Friday, April 3rd, the sanctuary will be open from 9:00 a.m.—6:00 p.m. for prayer and reflection. On Sunday, April 5th, after we have wept, we will gather at 10:30 a.m. in the morning to sing again our “Alleluias.” Pastor Phil’s sermon is titled, “When the Sun Had Risen.” And, as you have read in last month’s Impact, the choir will sing the Hallelujah chorus of Handel’s “Messiah.” Please come and celebrate “New Life” this Easter. On Thursday evening, April 2nd, we will gather in the sanctuary for a Maundy Thursday Service whereby we recall the “Last Supper.”

Ponder with the Pastor This New Life… You may recall Bob Vila's home improvement show, “This Old House,” that aired for quite some time on public television. I’m thinking his show served as a model for the numerous home improvement shows on HGTV. I watch them occasionally, because I like how the designers and construction folks are able to take an old home (usually in bad repair or quite dated) and restore it to its former glory. Rather than razing the old structures, folks with vision are able to see the “diamond in the rough.” And, they are will-ing to invest resources of various kinds (time, energy and money) into that which many would not. The transformations that take place are nothing short of miraculous. As we quickly approach Easter, I am reminded of the many transforma-tions that can happen in our lives because of the investment God made in Christ. While many others may look upon us and not see anything worth very much, God, whose vision is better than any of ours, saw (and sees) that which is redemptive. For the new life that happens because of that investment, we are grateful. This gratitude gives us reason to wonder what life would be like if we chose to recycle more and throw away less. What if we modeled our own investment practices after one offered to us by God? What might happen if we divest in a “throw it away” mindset and create (and/or sustain) one that says, “If it is giving you fits and starts, work with it, nurture it, repair it.” But, that requires an investment, doesn’t it? It seems like it has been made too easy for us to junk things when they fail us. There are too many examples to paint such a picture; one article, how-ever, succinctly gets to the heart of what I’m trying to convey. In his December 10, 2014, column in “The Washington Post,” George F. Will reflected on the Eric Garner story. Mr. Garner, as you may recall, was the person who sold a cigarette to someone on the street (it is illegal to do that in New York because of some tax issue). But, not only was he arrested, and taken to the ground and handcuffed for such a “crime,” but he ulti-mately lost his life because, in the “take down,” he was asphyxiated. He died over a cigarette. A garbage collector in Georgia was arrested and received a prison sentence for collecting trash too early in the morning. And, here in Frederick County, there have been questionable police prac-tices that have led to loss of life in some cases, and, in others, mountains have been made out of molehills. Thank goodness God doesn’t work that.

Will wrote, “Over criminalization has become a national plague. And when more and more behaviors are criminalized, there are more and more occasions for police, who embody the state’s monopoly on legitimate violence, and who fully participate in humanity’s flaws, to make mistakes” (George F. Will, “The Washington Post,” December 10, 2014). And, in a publication titled, “International Centre for Prison Studies,” it was noted that the United States has the highest prison population rate in the world. Half of the roughly 10.2 million people in prisons worldwide are here in the United States (International Centre for Prison Studies, “World Prison Population List,” Roy Walmsley, London, England). In other words, it would appear we aren’t overly interested in reform as much as we are confinement. Of course, there are those who need to serve time: their egregious crimes against other human beings demand that. There are many, however, who need something other than being locked up; their lives ruined. Perhaps what they need is someone or a group of individuals to make an investment in them. And, of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t share with them and each other the new life that is available on account of what we believe resurrection is all about. Blessings,

Consistory Corner Consistory Minutes of the March 15, 2015 Meeting

The Pastor's Report, the Treasurer, & Improvement Fund reports were presented and approved. Con

Items from Past Meetings: Financial Audit—It is recommended that a basic level of duty separa-tion be put in place. This would involve having one person completing the account reconciliation and a separate person writing checks and making deposits. The committee will continue to review practices and recommend any adjustments that support the individuals completing Glade’s financial tasks. Stewardship Committee—Members of committee; Bob Stull, Alan VenDouern, & Shannon Jordre. Christian Education—The last adult discussion Forum will be “Returning Veterans. Returning Hope.” A curriculum used by many churches to help congregations think both theologically and practically about healing from the trauma of war and learning the meaning of Jesus’ way of peace. The Children’s Sunday School program has been reviewed and scheduled for the next year (2015-16). Lisa reported plans to solicit ideas from the congregation to build an adult program for the next program year. New By-laws/Committee Re-organization—The committee has been formed and work is in progress. Annual Membership Number—As a result of the census work, we moved 27 people to inactive status. We reported in the 2014 CAC annual report 169 members. This is the number on which Glade determines a quorum for congregational meetings. Consistory Meetings—The Consistory meetings will be held the 3rd Sunday of each month directly following the worship service. New Business: Treasurer Position—With the resignation of Chad Weddle, the consistory members are encouraged to identify individuals who can be considered for the treasurer’s position. Pictorial Directory—Christy Yingling has volunteered to lead this project.

Care Givers The Care Givers Ministry recently had a breakfast meeting at Bob Evans Restaurant. Despite the traces of snow on the ground, our focus was on Spring & renewal. During our devotional time, I shared this poem, “Easter Bouquet” by June Bacher. Now I share it with you, hoping it will inspire you to show others you care by bringing some joy to “some lonely friend in need,”

I've gathered in an armful Each day I’ll share a petal Of brilliant Easter bloom—- A kindly thought or deed, Reminder of the springtime Wafting love’s aroma to And brevity of gloom. Some lonely friend in need.

Now if I share my flowers It is true they’ll fade away —- By giving it away.

Easter Blessings! In God’s Love, Becky D

SPRING DINNERS 2015 REPORT

I want to express our Thanks to you! Many supported these dinners by coming to help at the Walkersville Fire Hall. Some prayed, others gave monetary support, some brought requested items such as sugar or decaf. coffee. Some sewed, baked, cooked, or crafted, and many shared their talents. We are grateful for each of you! Many tasks were accomplished for successful Spring Dinners and Bazaar. We had heavy snow the day before the dinners. Many thanks to those who were able to get the prep work accomplished that day!

The first week of February we sent around 429 flyers by bulk mail to our mailing list, while others were notified by e-mail. Five radio sta-tions also received flyers as well. Ads were also placed in the F.N.P. Many phone calls were made.

On Friday night we served 260 dinners, and Saturday 468 dinners were served. 728 dinners served total, 85 of which were carry outs. Tip jars on the tables netted $138. The craft table profit was $422. and the bake table earned $1093.75 Seventy one gallons of oys-ters were used, at a cost of $60. a gallon.

We are grateful for the use of the beautiful Walkersville Fire Hall, the fire company members who helped us, local Girl Scout troop, 4-H members and the Glade Youth group, and all of the leaders who per-formed many hours of work.

Thanks for your support!

Mission & Outreach

INTRODUCING “CANA” CHRISTIAN ADULTS NURTURING ANOTHER The Graceham Moravian congregation has initiated a new singles’ ministry whose purpose will be to provide unmarried women and men over the age of 30 with Christ-honoring activities in a spiritually nurturing and supportive environment, where be God’s grace, healthy, lasting relationships characterized by mutual love, honor and care may develop and grow. We are inviting men and women from churches located in the Walkersville and Catoctin feeder school areas to attend this ministry.

Plans are to meet monthly at the church for a meal provided by the church followed by a social activity and a time for sharing concerns. Donations will be accepted to cover expenses. It is part of the vision that the group would participate in a variety of service opportunities in local congregations. All dinners will be held in Fellowship Hall in the basement at the church at 8231A Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, Md. Please contact Joy Flickinger ([email protected]) or Judy Beall.

All,

We provided Mission of Mercy (MOM) with 2nd Mile Giving funds each year and in 2014 we made a donation of $2,500 in Connie Walker’s name for the purchase of a new mobile clinic. MOM holds regular donor tours of their facilities. I have gone on one of these and found it very worthwhile. You get to see the full opera-tion at Frederick Church of the Brethren and speak with senior people in the organization as well as tour the mobile clinic. Upcoming dates are all of Mondays from 10-11 on April 6th and April 20th. To attend, RSVP to Lindsay Fisher at 301-682-5683 x201 or [email protected].

Please support this fundraiser to honor the memory of Connie Walker and to celebrate her commitment to the Mission & Outreach projects of this church.

Connie’s husband Dan Patrell, with the help of local business owners, is organizing the ConnieFab51 Skittles Tournament, which will benefit Glade’s Mission & Outreach Team and the Skittles Tournament’s winner’s designated charity.

Skittles is a centuries-old tabletop bowling game that utilizes a spinning top. Players spin a top from its entry gate where it continues to move and knock down (or not) the wooden pins, or “skittles,” as they used to be called. Underneath each pin is a point value (some positive, some negative). In the Skittles Tournament, two players compete against each other, and the player with the higher score advances to the next ‘round.’ In event of a tie, the play-ers re-spin. At the end of the tournament, the player who has advanced to and won the final round receives half of all donations received for his or her designated charity. The remaining funds will support the work of our own Mission & Outreach Team.

For complete details, visit http://conniefab50.com. If you have questions, please speak with Tom or Marlene England. Thanks in advance for your support.

100 percent of the monies raised goes to the winning charities. Players play for her or his designated nonprofit—and bragging rights. The tournament is open to all nonprofits. The two requirements are that the nonprofit has a 501c3 status with the IRS (if you don’t know, ask you nonprofit). The second requirement is that your nonprofit cannot be electoral in nature. ♦ 47.5% of all funds raised will go toward the Glad UCC M&O team ♦ 47.5% of all funds raised will go toward the charity whose players

nership Program ♦ Funds for the Frederick Center to pay for a counselor to help

LGBTQ youth in the program. ♦ School supply kits through Church World Service. ♦ Meals from Glade’s church supper for our Food Bank guests. ♦ Funds to support the purchase of Mission of Mercy’s new mobile

The week of February 9th the social hall and stage floor was refinished. The Antietam Flooring completed the work. Thanks to all who helped clear and replaced the furnishings to the areas.

The floors looks beautiful!
