W ith the m ild w inter w e just had, this prom ises to be an especially bad year for fleas.  A ccording to the O regon Veterinary M edical A ssociation, you should w atch for adult fleas on your pet or in your house, flea excrem ent or “flea dirt” on your pet’s skin that turns reddish in w ater, irritated skin and/ or excessive itching, or flea eggs that look like salt- sized w hite ovals.    You can treat adult fleas w ith topical or oral m onthly adulticides and eggs and larvae w ith Insect Grow th Regulators (IGRs) and Insect D evelopm ent Inhibitors (ID Is). Your veterinarian m ay recomm end a com bined integrated control program .  Both naturally-based pyrethrins and the synthetic pyrethroids are typically used in treatm ents.; keep in in m ind that w hile the synthetic is safe for dogs, it is very toxic for cats.    A lw ays check dosage requirem ents and w atch for potential interactions w ith other m edications your pet is taking. A nd alw ays, if you have any questions about fleas or flea treatm ent, contact your veterinarian. Your vet is the true expert.
