TRANSCRIPT

One of my

fondest memo-

ries of my youth

is the experience

I had as a counselor and Hazzanut

specialist at Camp Ramah in

Utterson, Ontario, Canada. This

beautiful, rustic landscape located

140 miles north of Toronto was a

beautiful location to appreciate all

of the Jewish activities that a

summer at Ramah brings along

with the magnificence of nature

and cool, clear weather of northern

Canada. One of my responsibilities

that summer was to teach the

correct tropes for Torah reading,

Haftorah, Megillah and High Holy

Day cantillation to the older camp-

ers, under the supervision of my

mentor Cantor Saul Wachs, who

was a marvelous Hazzan and one

of the leading educators of the

Conservative movement. I learned

a great deal from Dr. Wachs that

summer. In addition, the Director

of the Camp was Donald Adelman,

a former student of my Dad’s from

Bridgeport, CT who had devoted a

good deal of his life to the Camp

Ramah movement.

By the way, I recommend to all

of the parents of our congregation

to send their children to any of the

several Camp Ramahs that are

available. They are all wonderful

and valuable places for our chil-

dren to have an incredible sum-

mer. Generous scholarships are

available through the generosity of

Sidney and Meralee Schlusselberg.

As a member of the staff, I had

a day off every week, so usually two

or three of us would take the 2½

hour drive to spend time in Toron-

to. Toronto is a town of great

culture, history, and education. The

Jewish population is about 170,000.

There are numerous synagogues,

kosher markets and restaurants,

Jewish Community Centers, reli-

gious goods stores, and many

Jewish cultural activities each

month. I really enjoyed those days

in Toronto.

I was invited to return to

Toronto this past March where I

was the guest speaker at the

Darchei Noam synagogue. I had the

opportunity to speak on the subject

of the “Return of the Anusim,”

which as you know has been a

passion of mine since moving to El

Paso. Prior to my talk, Sharon and I

had the opportunity to meet the

wonderful spiritual leader of the

congregation, Rabbi Tina Grimberg.

Rabbi Grimberg grew up in the

Ukraine where she, as one of the

Soviet “Refuseniks,” never had the

opportunity to learn about her

religion. When she, and so many

other Jews were allowed to leave

the Soviet Union, she came to

Indianapolis as a teenager, and

immediately was involved in the

cause of freeing Soviet Jews. Tina

became a family therapist, and at

the same time became a student of

Rabbi Sandy Sasso, who, together

with her husband, Rabbi Dennis C.

Sasso, were rabbis of Congregation

Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis.

Tina became so inspired by her

Rabbinic mentor that she attended

Hebrew Union College and was

ordained as a rabbi in 2001. She

has been the rabbi at the syna-

gogue in Toronto for ten years.

She shared many stories of grow-

ing up as a Jew who could not

learn about her religion until she

left the Ukraine, and I saw a great

deal of similarity with what many

Hispanic crypto-Jews were forced

to endure.

Over 100 people attended my

talk and a number of attendees

revealed their stories of hidden

Jewish identity during the question

and answer time. Even in a location far away from the

Southwest of the United States, there are crypto-Jews who

are exploring their Jewish roots. According to a recent

census, the largest Latin American Canadian population

is in Toronto, with that number about 100,000. Montreal

has approximately 75,000, Vancouver 23,000, Calgary

13,000 and Ottowa 11,000. If only 10% of that population

has Jewish roots, that is still a significant potential in-

crease of the world Jewish population. I met Canadians

whose roots were from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Colombia, El

Salvador, and Mexico. Articles about my visit appeared in

both Spanish and English periodicals. While in Toronto we

visited the largest synagogue in North America, Beth

Tzedec Synagogue, had lunch at a Kosher restaurant and

bought items for our grandchildren at a Jewish book

store.

We also travelled to Niagara Falls which was actually

frozen. We had not been there in over 30 years. It was so

beautiful with just a few places beginning to thaw out.

With the mist forming where the Falls were melting, in

the deep blue water, it was clear that only God could have

formed such an artistic and natural creation.

Once again it was a wonderful opportunity for me to

represent Congregation B’nai Zion in another country and

to renew experiences from a long time ago. Our syna-

gogue is well known in many places throughout the

world, and our Canadian Jewish brothers and sisters have

asked me to give you their fond greetings and blessing.

However, do not despair. Shortly after our

second night Pesach Community Seder this month

we will be hosting the community’s Yom Ha-

Atzmaut celebration on the 26th. This is another

program being organized together with the Jewish

Federation through one of their grants. We will have

many activities, including the performance of Hagit

Yaso, who in 2011 won the Kokhav Nolad (Israeli

version of American Idol). This promises to be

another excellent program, and I hope you can join

us to celebrate Israel’s independence together with

all of the El Paso community.

May this season of Pesach be an opportunity for

all of us to join together in the strengthening of our

Jewish community in El Paso.

Chag Sameach!

I hope you have enjoyed the

many programs we have hosted at

our Congregation during these past

few months. On December 8th, the

Anusim Center and Congregation

B’nai Zion welcomed Sarah Aroeste,

who captivated us with her beautiful

Sephardic songs and music. Then on January 17th we

transformed our social hall, treating you to a Fabulous

Casino Night that was full of fun, and presented an

excellent opportunity to socialize. On March 1st,

through a grant from the Jewish Federation of El Paso,

we hosted the Shalom Broadway Revue which was a

resounding success, showcasing the singing and

acting skills of many very talented members of our

community. If you missed any of these outstanding

programs, you really missed out on having a great

time.

El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center’s

2015 Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Days of Remembrance Commemoration Seventy years ago, Allied soldiers came face to face with the depth of man’s inhumanity to man as they liberated Nazi concentration camps and killing centers. The small number of survivors left were faced with a loss of family and home. Many chose to leave, to make a home somewhere new, somehwere not haunted by the shadows of the Holocaust. Seventy years later, as anti-Semitism once again increases and the number of living survivors dwindles, the need to remember becomes even more pressing. Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Days of Remembrance, memorializes the millions of victims of the Holocaust and honors the survivors, particularly those who made El Paso their home after the war. This year El Paso Holocaust survivors will speak, along with their children and grandchildren, on the experiences they en-dured, the impact of the Holocaust on generations, and the importance of carrying on the legacy of survival. This commemoration is open to the public. There is no cost to attend.

Tof Miriam Healing Drum Circle April 12th at 2:30 PM

Congregation B’nai Zion

Ladies, fellow sisters, come and treat yourself to the time & company of other wom-en, for sharing and healing. Since the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, and before, Jewish women have been singing & chanting to the rhythm of the frame drum. The use of voice, rhythm, and music for healing is an ancient tradition. Come experience the spiritual and healing power of the Tof Miriam (Miriam's drum), and discover the power of the Divine Feminine in yourself, in our Jewish history, and in our Jewish texts. I look forward to seeing you all! If you have a hand drum of any kind, a tambourine, a shaker, please bring it! I will also have some hand drums available. This first gathering will be for women only, and no children please.
