Spring is here. The grass is turning green, and the trees are blooming, so it seems like the appropriate time to talk about growth … growth for you, your Agency, and your production.
We talk a lot about recruiting. After all, recruiting is what keeps United American and First United American strong and productive, just the way it keeps your Agency thriving. Bringing new people on board can change the whole dynamic of your team. New people with creative ideas and inventive ways of doing things can be just what you need to kick things up a notch.
I LOVE RECRUITING! Being able to offer the UA or First UA opportunity to new Agents is always exciting for me, especially when it’s at a live workshop where I have the chance to meet, greet, and answer questions. I think I enjoy it so much because I’m fully aware of the tremendous possibilities for success that potentially lie ahead for recruits. They can truly create a long-term income stream selling UA or First UA products. For instance, if a new Agent generates $5,000 to $10,000 NAIP a month his/her first year and doubles that in the second or third year, what would that mean in overrides now and in the future? It means big money for Writing Agents and General Agents and a good night’s sleep for thousands of policyholders who know they’re well protected. I’ve been there, and it’s exciting every single
time another Agent wants to pursue that path, a path so many successful General Agents and Writing Agents have followed. Recruit three new Agents a month and build a dynamic organization. With 10,000 Seniors turning 65 every day in the United States and many needing a Medicare Supplement, that’s a lot of potential!
Where do you find good recruits? Everywhere! And that’s the mindset you need to have if you’re going to bring good people into your Agency. Consider the fact that everywhere you go you can potentially find quality people to join your team. And they don’t have to be of any certain age or gender. Check out pages 6 and 7 for more insight on the recruiting process and be sure to read pages 8 and 9 to see why the Agent Appointment Automation System is such a big plus for recruiting.
E-APP REWARD CONTESTWe kicked off the e-App Reward Contest this month and it’s already generating lots of interest and activity among our newly appointed Agents. A little extra incentive never hurt anyone … especially when it’s in addition to our outstanding commission structure. The contest runs through June 30, 2014, so all you new kids on the block have plenty of time to turn those e-App Reward points into great prizes from the online catalog.
PROMOTE MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTS We’ve survived the initial rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and made it past the deadline for enrollment. Those of you who work every day selling Medicare Supplements can’t help but feel concern for those selling Medicare Advantage plans. Based on what I’ve read in recent months, Medicare Advantage is still being hit hard by cuts, potential cuts, and general uncertainty about its future. My advice to those selling Medicare Advantage? Concentrate your time and energy on promoting Medicare Supplements. Medicare Supplements are:
Guaranteed renewable as long as premiums are paid on time
Accepted by any doctor, hospital, or medical facility that accepts Medicare patients
Not directly affected by cuts related to the ACA
With April here already, June is not far behind. Many of you are looking forward to the 2014 Convention in New Orleans. It’s a fantastic place to party and offers some of the best food and music on the planet. But if you didn’t qualify for New Orleans, set your sight and your production on Boca Raton for 2015. Pump up the volume through the next three quarters and get ready for the sunshine state!

WHY DO AGENTS LEAVE THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY?
¦ Retirement? ¦ Downsizing? ¦ A more appealing career opportunity? ¦ Industry insecurity created by the Affordable Care Act?
Whatever the reason, Agents are leaving or never starting in the first place. According to an article in Life Insurance Selling, “Thanks to negative perceptions about the profession, a lack of awareness about rewarding careers, and a limited pool of trained talent, graduating students fill no more than 15 percent of the industry’s hiring needs. The tendency to overlook insurance careers by both the Millennial Generation and Gen Xers between ages 30 and 51 creates an enormous challenge for an industry that anticipates a 50 percent workforce turnover in the next 15 years.”
LOOK TO EXPERIENCE!While bringing younger generations into the industry is critical, don’t overlook experience. Older Agents may want a new challenge or simply to work with a different customer base. Don’t disregard them. They are:
✔ Competent, capable, motivated ✔ Already experienced in the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of insurance sales ✔ Immediately productive ✔ Mentors for younger, less experienced Agents
Older Agents may not remain with you for 20 years, but they can make a profound difference to your success while you have them. And don’t restrict yourself only to seasoned Agents. Older people from noninsurance backgrounds who are willing to put in the time and effort to earn a license can significantly increase your bottom line.
THE TIME IS NOW!According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics:
Quick Facts: Insurance Sales Agents
2012 Median Pay $48,150 per year $23.15 per hour
Entry-Level Education High school diploma or equivalent
Work Experience in a Related Occupation Not Required
On-the-job Training Yes
Number of Jobs 2012 443,400
Job Outlook 2012-22 More than a 10 percent increase
Additional Jobs 2012-22 45,900
It’s important to recruit younger Agents into the industry, and those top three categories should make new graduates sit up and take notice. Where else can you make almost $50,000 a year with only a high school education and no previous experience?6 April 2014 NEW GROWTH

THE LADIES HAVE IT!The insurance industry employs a lot of women, but a large percentage of them are in support or administrative positions. Is there a good reason for it? Absolutely not!! Women are a great fit for a career in insurance sales:
♀ Women have good people skills: Building strong relationships with customers is a huge part of successful sales. Women have natural social skills and acute emotional antennae, which make them ideal candidates for sales success.
♀ Women are good listeners: Women are generally excellent listeners – an important trait in salespeople. Being able to listen to the needs of a customer — really listen — is an important part of building a lasting and trusting relationship.
♀ Women empathize: A recent study showed middle-aged women were extremely empathetic – more so than most people (male or female). Empathy is a great quality to have in sales because it helps the seller relate to the buyer, which helps the seller provide the buyer with exactly what the buyer wants or needs. This quality builds trust, encourages loyalty, and builds credibility.
♀ Women love the flexibility of insurance sales: Because it’s not a ‘9 to 5’ career, insurance sales allows women the flexibility to coordinate home, family, and career in a way that works for them.

“The Agent Appointment Automation System has given
my team the opportunity to increase recruiting results by approximately 20
percent per year! For the General Agent wanting to build an Agency, this system could simplify the contracting process and impress the new Agent with our timely technology.”
~Chuck Mankamyer, SVP, UA & First UA General Agents
“As a recruiter I feel it’s so much better than paper
applications. The appointment process is much faster; I have had
Agents appointed in as few as six hours! It makes my life easier — no more chasing
down Agents for things missed on paper applications (signatures and other info),
because the automated application won’t let you continue if there are errors.”
~Michael O’Neill, Agent Recruiter
“Our Agent Appointment Automation System is intuitive
and has really helped streamline our appointment process. I have
seen Agents get appointed within 24 hours of filling out our automated application. I have even seen some
appointed in as little as five hours!”
~Michael Surrano, Senior Recruiter
“Considering the fast-paced lives most of us lead, automation is crucial for increasing efficiency.”
~Val Bonitto, Administrative Assistant
“I’ve used UA’s Agent Appointment Automation System
quite a few times to get sub-Agents appointed with our Agency. All I can
say is … WOW! It’s super fast and easy for me and for my subs. In our business, time is money, so the less time we spend
filling out paperwork the better!”~Todd Concklin,
LRC & Associates
“With all of the privacy issues going on today, we have
upgraded our recruiting systems to protect you from day one.”
~Ryan Sykes, National Director of Sales & Recruiting
“I love the automated appointment system, because the application is sure to be
complete when I get it; it doesn’t let you advance to the next step if something is not done correctly. I
often have fun with the Agents as I walk them through it. Every single one of them has fun with the last
page when they’re signing the application. I get funny descriptions on how the signature looks like 'trying to sign
with the old Etch-A-Sketch', or 'looks like a chicken did it!'. I’m also able to confirm receipt of the application
when they submit it. Ain’t technology grand!”~Carol Hill-Frazier,
Agent Recruiter
“The automated appointment system eliminates
the hassle of paperwork, saves valuable time, and can get
Agents selling and earning money with UA faster than ever!”
~Alyssa Church, Agent Recruiter
Whether you want to save time, trees, or both, Agent Appointments can help. Getting Agents appointed quickly and electronically makes the process fast and efficient for everyone. Here’s why SVP Chuck Mankamyer, our Eagles, Directors, and Recruiters think you should make regular use of this terrific, easy-to-use tool.

“The automated system has streamlined the Agent appointment
process, greatly reduced paperwork, and has really shortened the time from submission
to appointment. What I really like, compared to the e-mailed PDF contracting, is that the forms are
all completed properly and all pages are submitted at once. New Agents are very impressed by how quickly
they get their Agent number and the ability to get going right away. It’s a real plus for Agency building! Thanks
to Cara Randolph and Juliann Pagoria for their diligence in creating the automated appointment
system and their ongoing Agent support.”~Jon Ahlbum,
The Ahlbum Group
“United American’s Agent Appointment Automation
System is lightning fast, extremely simple, very efficient, and absolutely makes it easy for any Agent/Agency
to do business with us by contracting the Agent in record time.”
~Henry Vazquez, Assistant Director
“The automated appointment system not only
saves time but also money, because it makes us more productive. It is simple and easy to use; it's virtually error free. It
eliminates all the paperwork being faxed back and forth. No more hunting down missing
information, missing pages, missing signatures, YEAH!! The focus of our attention stays with
training new Agents and on the UA product line, not worrying about paperwork. It’s easy,
efficient, and paperless! Way to go, UA!!”~Robert Wroblewski, SOS Insurance Group
“Even those technologically challenged
find the automation system easy to use. It’s simple! Seamless!
And only takes five minutes.”~Danielle Kirschner,
Senior Recruiter “The Agent Appointment Automation System is the first step
toward getting an Agent contracted with United American. The ability to seamlessly send
an appointment application to an Agent in an e-mail before, during, or after a live conversation gives me the ability to build rapport with Agents
while walking them through the application. The automated system is a vital part of the
appointment process for our new Agents.”~Adam Rivera,
Agent Recruiter
“The automated appointment process is the best system I have seen
in my 36-plus years of recruiting Agents in the insurance business. It is extremely
fast and very accurate and allows us to resend invitations to Agents who don’t fill it out
right away. With this system it allows us to achieve our monthly recruiting goals.”
~Steve Siet, Senior Recruiter
“There’s never a worry about having out-of-date
forms and there’s no additional hierarchy forms to complete.”
~Jonathan Vall, Assistant Director of Training
