• Our purpose - To develop young leaders of character to provide for the greater good of the State and the Nation.
• We’re all about well educated leaders who have a strong moral character.
• Preparing Cadets for a challenging career on the water.
Leadership
• The fundamental principle is that leadership development is a life long process – In other words, we spend most of our lives becoming leaders, not being leaders!!

• The development of leadership skills, doesn’t require any special training or fancy tools. Instead, most of our development comes from our life’s experiences – It’s about the Habit….

• It’s about the habit of treating every significant event, both good and bad in our lives, as a learning experience.
How many Eagle Scouts, Athletes or part-time job?

• So where do we begin?
• Army leadership for LTs• AF leadership for LTs• Corps Leadership?

• So what does Corps leadership look like?– Learn the rules and follow them– Set the example by following the rules– Don’t look the other way when you see a violation– Don’t treat all problems the same• Is it a repeat problem• Is it a major problem—alcohol, drugs, Title IX, assult• Is it a minor problem

• So what does Corps leadership look like?– Get involved with your freshmen – they will
remember you the rest of their lives– Listen to them, they all have problems and you
can help them– Treat them like your kid brother

• So what does Corps leadership look like?– Use your upperclassmen to help you out!– Help them to take on some leadership positions• Platoon leader, Squad leader, Admin Sgt, etc• Get them involved with service projects, tutoring and
recreation• Use your XO and Senior Chief, that’s what they are
there for

• Being a leader is not as easy as it sounds!!!

– Learn to deal with complaints and criticisms

• Within the first 3 months something significant will happen – drugs, TitleIX, cheating or injuries. Stay calm, it comes with the territory
• Gen Webber used to say: You will have good days and bad days. The key is to have more good days. Hang in there
• Good leadership takes TIME! You don’t learn it overnight – take it day by day
