I had the opportunity this past week to have a conversation about Wake Forest as a community with a small group of our youth leadership students from Heritage High School. I asked them what was unique about Wake Forest. Their description was “our community is in constant collision of old and new”. As I probed, they spoke of how this collision brought about diversity. It was their grasp of diversity that really intrigued my critical thinking. Why did they see this “collision of diversity” as being so important to community?

They reflected on ideas about diversity as more than just age, beliefs and cultures. The discussion was more about broad strokes of ideas coming together for the betterment of all. Understanding the history of a project or idea helps the process as new ideas are formulated to move forward. We discussed how people come to the table with different experiences. Having discussions of these varied experiences bring about change moving the mindset out of a silo of thinking, to a community of thinking. As students in the classroom, they are consistently working on projects in groups rather than as individuals. They discussed how this made for a quality project. They spoke of how

One student mentioned “backpack buddies” as an example of this concept of “constant collision”. A problem was observed, different experiences of people came to a discussion, an idea was formed, and a community took action for the betterment of all.

As the bell rang, they bustled off to the next class but not before thanking me for the conversation stating “you listened to us and our thoughts and we appreciate that”.

a business? Could this idea of collaboration create new lines of service or products? How would community thinking improve the quality of productivity?

I was left with the following summing thoughts. First, I think our future is in great hands based on the insightful observations of these young leaders. Next, I challenge my own ideals of diversity to be more open to constant collision for collaboration. Finally, track the implementation of diversity and its impact on my outcomes to problem solving.

Small Business of the Month - Preferred Living Solutions

New Book Organizes Your Most Important Documents

Life is unpredictable, so you can never be too prepared! The Drop Dead Book©: All your info. In one place. Just in case. was created by Preferred Living Solutions, a Wake Forest care management company, to help people organize and store their most important documents and personal information in one easy-to-find location. The book is an organizational binder with forms and questionnaires to be completed with one’s most important information, as well as pockets to store essential documents. It is organized into well-defined sections to record and organize the significant details of one’s life, including sections for medical and financial information; legal documents; insurance policies; usernames, logins and passwords; and much more.

The health section includes pages for listing current health care providers, allergies, assistive devices, medications, diagnosis, medical history and hospitalizations as well as pockets for storing forms like insurance policies, immunization records and treatment plans.

The financial section has pages for listing bank accounts, assets, income and recurring expenses. It is especially critical to have this information recorded since the division of labor in families often has one member holding all of this information and can quickly become a crisis if that person becomes incapacitated or unavailable.

Melanie Mattingly, a Wake Forest native who founded Preferred Living Solutions in 2008, created The Drop Dead Book from her own experience of trying to find important, need-to-know information for her family members as well as clients. The book’s name came from one of Mattingly’s clients whose husband had recently passed away. In the midst of her grief, she was overwhelmed in searching for the information necessary to handle funeral arrangements, pay bills and continue to manage their household. “I want all of my information in one place so my daughter doesn’t have to do this in case I drop dead,” she told Mattingly.

“We find that people are often rummaging through shoeboxes and going on scavenger hunts to find things like birth certificates, military documents, bank account information, social security cards and warranty information,” Mattingly explains. “In helping people apply for benefits, convey information to healthcare professionals and even reboot computers, we too have had difficulty locating the details needed to handle these tasks. The Drop Dead Book will now change that,” she adds.

Mattingly is quick to point out The Drop Dead Book is not about dying, it is about living prepared! The book is a necessity for people with children, couples, people who live alone,

seniors…essentially everyone who needs their documents, data, directions and desires captured in one easy to grab and use binder. In addition to being a great organizing tool, The Drop Dead Book also provides a springboard for conversations with loved ones about their wishes and expectations in the event of an emergency.

The Drop Dead Book is available for purchase through the Preferred Living Solutions website at www.preferredlivingsolutions.com or in their office at 10520 Ligon Mill Rd, Suite 100-B, Wake Forest.

About Preferred Living SolutionsPreferred Living Solutions (PLS), a care management company headquartered in Wake Forest, NC, serves families throughout Wake County and the surrounding areas. PLS works closely

with individuals and families to identify, access and manage supports and services with the goal of reducing the stress for caregivers and maximize quality of life for seniors.

Ambassador of the Month - Danielle Griffith - Harrington Bank

I’m a native North Carolinian raised by a family that can’t remember a generation that wasn’t born and raised here, whose favorite family activity is stirring a giant pot of Brunswick stew for hours at a tailgate, and for whom “southern cuisine” isn’t the latest foodie trend - it’s just supper. After graduating from high school in Apex, I pursued my love of excessive homework at Wake Forest University, where I studied History and Spanish. I spent two years after college in the best sales and customer service school there is: waiting tables for the highly demanding clientele of Aspen, Colorado. And I skied, a lot. I moved home to the Triangle in 2008 and couldn’t believe how much it had grown in the six years I’d been away. In my free time you’ll find me exploring new local restaurants, seeing live music, roaming the North Carolina Museum of Art, checking out local festivals, and taking advantage of our amazing parks. I am a dedicated, though only occasionally successful, student of Ina Garten and try to travel as much as possible (ask me how to say Happy New Year in Vietnamese!).

I love watching our beloved home earn award after award for being a great place

to live, work, start a business, buy a house, be single, raise a family, drive a car - you name it, we’re good at it. I constantly hear from new residents that they chose to come to the Triangle specifically for its culture, its family-friendly reputation, its job market, and of course, the weather. As Business Development Coordinator at Harrington Bank, my favorite part about what I do is having the opportunity to build lasting relationships with so

many different people and learn what exactly makes them and their businesses tick. As a community bank, we get to be an integral part of our growing local economy. At Harrington, we think of ourselves as more than just a bank with coffee and cookies (although we do have delicious coffee and cookies - stop in and try some!). We strive to be a partner in growing

your business - by saving you money with our Free Business Checking, by saving you time and eliminating your daily trip to the bank with our Courier Service, and by not only knowing your name, but your family, your business, your unique banking needs, and what’s most important to you in your banking relationship. Let’s get together and I’ll tell you more about what true community banking is all about!

Future Growth Fund AnnouncedThe governing Board of the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking additional donations for their Future Growth Fund. The FGF will fund the Chamber’s membership, future staffing needs, space needs, office improvements, and technological needs.

The Board is asking for additional commitments from community leaders and investors to help the Chamber with seed funding for the FGF. Just like the Wake Forest Community the Chamber is having growing pains and excited about the future of the organization.

We already have some businesses that are helping. As gracious examples, The Southeastern Baptist Seminary Heritage Wake Forest, Focus Design, and Wake Forest Federal have committed to above and beyond their normal yearly investment to help the FGF - which in turns helps the greater Wake Forest area community.

If your business would like to help the Chamber and community with an additional investment, please contact Marla Akridge, [email protected].

Wake Forest Academy of Fine Arts has an extremely talented dancer who has won a scholarship to attend a summer intensive in NYC this summer however the scholarship covers about 1/5 of the cost. She needs to raise about $4,000. This

summer intensive will give her the opportunity to work with Broadway choreographers and dancers as well as audition for performance opportunities. It’s a huge deal. Her mom is a single mom and teacher working 2 jobs to pay for her daughters dance, because she truly is a star in the making! If you’d like to sponsor her - please contact Aimee Neri, Assistant Director, 919-554-0000.

Congratulations to Margorie & Earl Brevofield for celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary!
