Be on the lookout! Brother Steve Cruz is
preparing an all out Membership drive. A “Blitz” if
you wish, culminating with our Memorial Mass
April 28. Brother Joe Cruz is assisting. Here again,
talk to your catholic neighbor, the man you see at
Mass, the young and the “old”, and invite them to
join our fraternity.
Our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, wrote to
me and said,”… the members of your council are
the guys that ‘make things happen.’ They're your
recruiters…your manpower…your support. Don't
underutilize this valuable resource….”
Brothers, we have continued to cull from our
ranks those who have covertly or overtly ignored
our repeated attempts to contact them. Thus, to
maintain the three years of attaining Star Council,
our efforts must be magnified. We are reaching out
to more of the needs of the broader Community.
Surely, there is a friend, a relative, a neighbor to
whom you can reach out and invite to join our
ranks. You are the council’s backbone.
At the April meeting, after the report of the
Nominating Committee, the floor will be open for
nominations. The duties of Elected and appointed
Officers and Directors can be found on the State
web site. Any third degree member in good
standing may nominate himself (or be nominated).
If you nominate someone else, please speak to him
before hand to make certain they are willing to
accept the nomination. I urge each of you to
consider becoming an officer of the Council.
The Council elected officers are Grand Knight,
Deputy Grand Knight, Chancellor, Recorder,
Treasurer, Advocate, and Warden, Inside Guard,
Outside Guard, One Year Trustee, Two Year
Trustee, and Three Year Trustee.
Lastly, April 15th, we will be meeting with Fr.
Bob to discuss the furnishing and use of the
Ministry’s building. I will report the results via
email.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all at the
April meeting and the Pasta Dinner!
God Bless!

As Worthy Officers and Brothers All:
He is Risen! Alleluia! I hope that all of
you have had a blessed Holy Week and a very
Happy Easter! May the light of the recently
risen Christ shine upon you all.
As many you know by now, this is my last
column as Financial Secretary of our
Council. While the decision to vacate this
office was not my own, I leave knowing that
the position of Financial Secretary is in
better shape than when I assumed it; and that
should be the goal of all officers in an
organization … to leave things better than the
way they received it.
I am proud of my three years serving in
this post and I am very grateful to everyone
who helped me succeed along the way. I
would, however, like to thank a few people
personally who have made a significant
impact upon me, in one way or another.
First, and without question, I must thank
the Grand Knight who submitted my name for appointment – PGK Robert Britten. Bob
had faith in a rookie knight with only 7
months experience in the Council when our
Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, in April
2010, appointed me. He saw something in me
and I can’t thank him enough for the
opportunity. It has truly enriched my life and
changed me in many ways. Thank you for
your confidence and, more importantly, your
friendship.
To PGK Pete Capece for two years of
partnership to help make this council first a
Star Council and then a Double Star Council. While many of our brothers also contributed
to these achievements, I am very proud to
have been instrumental in these awards and I
thank Pete for giving me the freedom to do
my job to the best of my ability. While we
may have had our differences along the way, I
am proud of the work we did together. Thank
you for supporting me, and more importantly,
trusting in me.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS #13240 PO BOX 121061 CLERMONT, FL 34712-1061 www.kofc13240.org
To the two men who were my closest partners:
SK Bill Overbay and SK Tony Giamboi, my two
Treasurers. Together as part of a two-man team,
the Financial Secretary and the Treasurer work in
tandem to efficiently take care of the financial
health of the council. It was a joy to work with you
both and I am grateful for all you did to make my
job a lot easier!
To SK Ernie Little, the man who gave me a
Form 100 and convinced me to become a Knight of
Columbus, there is little I can say that can ever
express how you changed my life and, I am sure,
the lives of many other men. Thank you for your
diligence and dedication to our Order and for
turning a lost, heartbroken young man into
someone with a much greater purpose. You are
truly someone who is a “Catholic gentleman” and,
even though you are no longer a member of our
Council, I will not forget what you did for me.
To SK Don Gelinas, our Fraternal Benefits
Advisor, I must also say a great big thank you. His
words of praise and admiration, both in public
and in private, mean so much to me. His positive
commentary of my work and my efforts on behalf
of the insurance side and the membership side of
the Supreme quota are humbling and I am
grateful for your support.
To the men who work with me on the First
Degree Exemplification Team: you all are great.
We have come so far together and I am proud to be
the Captain of such a wonderful group of men. I
have been assured that I will continue to lead this
team after my role as Financial Secretary comes to
a close so I look forward to many more great
exemplifications with you.
To two great men, SK Al Venezio and SK Jim
Venezio, my father and uncle, sharing this Knights
of Columbus journey with both of you has
brought our family even closer. We are family and
we are brothers in the Order. Maybe someday,
Allen, Jr. will join our ranks as a Squire and/or a
Knight and continue doing the work we have
begun.
Finally, to all of the Knights of our Council:
There are so many of you who have touched me in
some way that I can’t name you all here. Know
that as I close this chapter of my life as a Knight,
another door will surely open. It is my hope that I
can continue to contribute my talents and abilities
to this council from a seat next to all of you and,
maybe someday, serve this Council again as an
officer.
I have truly enjoyed my three years serving
you all as your Financial Secretary. It has been an
honor and privilege that I will treasure my whole
life. Thank you one and all for believing in me and
supporting me. Know that I always gave you the
best I had each and every day, even if I fell short,
made mistakes and experienced professional and
personal challenges along the way. I wish my
successor the best of luck and to all of you,
my fellow brother Knights, God’s blessings
upon you and your families always.
Vivat Jesus!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS #13240 PO BOX 121061 CLERMONT, FL 34712-1061 www.kofc13240.org
Dear Brother Knights When I first opened this corner I mentioned that
the topic of prolife would cover life from conception until natural death. Well the last few articles featured
information on the issues around birth and, in many cases, the thwarting of that process by abortion. I’d now like to move on to some of the other areas that, as Catholics and
members of society in general, should be of interest.Life itself is a process of growth and development,
communication and interaction, learning and experience
and many more things. Some of these are physical, some are cerebral and some are spiritual. And in some cases the events/experiences overlap or are intertwined.
In reviewing this march 22nd Florida Catholic I was
struck by the titles of two articles. The first- “Pakistani Church condemns attack on Christians” and the second “Speakers discuss Church’s effort to stop violence against
women”. These two may seem to be unrelated but I see the thread of intolerance in both. Intolerance - to the liberty to live one’s life according to a moral code of respect for a
fellow human, no matter what religion, sex, color, etc. We are blessed in the United States to have a number of base line documents that grant us many liberties. These are further defined and refined in our laws. Many other
countries have such documents, many do not. But documents and laws don’t guarantee we or our love ones will not suffer disrespect and even violence. While many in
today’s society may be aware of these documents and laws, we see constant examples of cases where they are ignored.
So what can we as knights do? We need to be “Pro” about teaching our children what is respect for life, and I am not just focusing on the unborn. We need to teach and practice in daily life what is morally right, when something
is right, and what is wrong. Teaching and living prolife can and should be the same, no breaks, and no exceptions. To help, we, as Knights and Catholic gentlemen, need to recall
and practice the teachings of Jesus as we go about our daily lives. Instead of watching the TV or playing the latest video game could we, as a family, occasionally discuss a bible
verse or review the gospel readings from Sunday mass. How about going over what your child learned in Religious Ed? How about what is in the news and on the TV- boy that could lead to some good discussions. My thought here
is be prepared. Do you yourself know what the church’s teachings are? Are you ready to discuss them with your spouse, your children? Do you really believe and practice
them? Remember people learn a lot by example and as Knights we are called to
be that example. God Bless. PS. If you don’t get the
Florida Catholic you might w a n t t o c o n s i d e r
subscribing.
Fraternally yours
Pete Stauder

Our Next Social
We will not have
a
Social this month
due to the Pasta
Dinner.
Since our new Pope chose the name Francis I, I thought I would talk a little about the life of St. Francis, the well known Catholic Saint.
St. Francis was born in Assisi, Italy, in the year 1181, his father was a wealthy silk merchant, and his mother was believed to be from a Noble family in France. As a youth, St. Francis often squandered his money, and fought in one of the many skirmishes between his town, Assisi, and Perugia. He was captured, and held as a prisoner for a year. Although associated with his father in trade, he showed little liking for a merchant's career. One of several children, legend has it that St. Francis was born in a stable. At baptism, he received the name Giovanni, which his father soon changed to Francesco.
At the age of twenty-five, St. Francis had two separate visions of Christ. After a pilgrimage to Rome, he decided to live a lifestyle in severe poverty, to take care of the needy and sick people of the community. St. Francisʼ father angrily disapproved of such a lifestyle for his son, but Francis was unswerving in his decision, and even publicly discarded the clothes on his back. Francis declared that God was his only father.
Thus he began his life of wandering the countryside speaking of God, repairing run-down churches, and serving the blind, lame, and those afflicted with leprosy. His rejection of wealth, because he saw it as a source of corruption for a Christian, did not sit well with some wealthy church officials. The Bishop of Assisi once said to Francis” Your way of Life without possessions of any kind seems to me very harsh and difficult.” St. Francis replied by saying “If we had possessions we should need arms for their defense. They are the source for quarrels and lawsuits, and are usually a great obstacle to the love of God and oneʼs neighbor.” Despite some misunderstandings, the Pope approved of the Franciscan Rule, with its ideals of simple living and total trust in God, and thus the beginning of the order of the Friars Minor, or Franciscans. Soon after St. Francis began his mendicant life, a young woman named Clare, also of Assisi wanted to follow in his footsteps. For many years after his death in the year 1226, the Poor Clares, as they came to be known, decided to emulate the ideals of St. Francis and his total trust in God. They spent their lives in meditation and prayer, and relied completely on Godʼs providence. For the good of the order at our upcoming meeting, I plan on having a guest speaker. Mike Ogden - Lecturer

Supreme and State Council News
Habemus Papam
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and
the 1.8 million members of the Knights of
Columbus extend cordial best wishes and
prayers to our newly elected pope. The
election of Pope Francis - the first pope
from the American hemisphere -
highlights the fact that America is the
continent of baptized Christians, and a
place of central importance to the faith
today. Pope Francis is well known also for
his emphasis on charity - the first
principle of the Knights of Columbus.
Both in our efforts for evangelization and
in our charitable work, we will strive with
him to bring the light of Christ to the
people of our continent during his
historic pontificate.
O God, who in your providential
design
willed that your Church be built
upon blessed Peter, whom you set over
the other apostles,
look with favor, we pray, on Francis,
our Pope,
and grant that he, whom you have
made Peter’s successor,
may be for your people a visible
source and foundation
of unity in faith and of communion.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your
Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

Brothers all,
We are just starting into the final quarter of this Fraternal Year. Your audits should be completed and filed (if not get them in as soon as possible); the Special Olympics contribution form should be filed; and the Fraternal Surveys must be in. For those Councils that have completed the paperwork, my thanks. For those that havenʼt, please do so soon. These are all important forms, required by your By-Laws, go to the Supreme contribution to our ability to support Special Olympics, or demonstrate to the IRS the tremendous work we do for Charity throughout the Order, preserving our tax exempt status. This is also the time to complete your filing on the State website www.floridakofc.org of the awards forms for the State Convention. These are much easier to complete than in prior years and is the best way for you Grand Knights to show your appreciation for all of your council memberʼs efforts this year. Speaking of the Convention, donʼt forget to file your delegates and guests on line for attendance and all activities they plan on attending. Also ensure you have a hotel reservation as they are almost gone. Invite your Council Chaplains to attend the Convention. It will give them greater insight into the workings of the Order and will provide them with the opportunity to meet the State and Diocesan Chaplains in a special breakout session planned for this year. This is also the time for each of us to make his legacy for the year. Many Councils are very close to meeting their recruitment goals and becoming Star, Double Star, or in a couple of cases Triple Star status. For those recovering from heavy suspensions, try to at least leave your council in a positive growth status for the year. The new members you are recruiting will play a critical role in years to come in making your Council a success in its support to the Parish and Community and your ability to accomplish charitable works. Regarding membership, are you aware of all of the incentives being offered this year for membership recruitment? Hereʼs a list:
• For this half of the Fraternal Year for each new member recruited Supreme is giving a rebate against next yearʼs per capita of $9.00 a new member. Did you realize that means no Supreme per capita for 2 members next year for each member recruited??
• Just announced is a new Supreme membership incentive, the Pope Francis Membership Incentive:
◦ Each time a council participates in a First Degree exemplification between April 1 and June 30, 2013, and brings at least one new member into that council, the council will be entered into a drawing for one of two all-expense paid trips to Italy for the grand knight, membership director, and their wives.
◦ In addition, each time a council conducts a charitable program between April 1 and June 30 ― and reports that program to the Supreme Council using the attached form ― the council will be entered into the drawing for one of two trips to Italy for the grand knight, program director, and their wives.

continued
There is no limit to how many entries – either for participation in First Degrees or programs conducted ― that a council is eligible for. The Supreme Officers will review all program report forms submitted to determine eligibility for the drawing.
Remember, you must file a form 450C for each degree hosted or attended with at least one new member to get credit. This will be matched with the District Deputies 450 for verification, I would guess.
Also, the State Councilʼs membership incentive for March through April is a drawing open to all Councils obtaining at least 10 new members for an expense paid trip to the State Convention. This includes two hotel nights, 2 banquet tickets, 2 breakfast tickets, and a Ladyʼs luncheon ticket. There will be two Councilʼs winning the trip. All Form 100s must be on file not later than 30 April 2013 at Supreme.
All of these incentives add up. If your Council has not recruited a new member this year or you need new members to obtain Star or zero loss status, you couldnʼt ask for a better time to do it than now. Finally, Supreme has granted the Florida Jurisdiction a unique incentive open to any Council that works towards and succeeds in assisting bringing in a new Council this fraternal year. That Council will not only have all new members recruited for the new Council added to their roster prior to transfer to the new Council, with the benefits listed above (which probably means at least Star Council status and 2 for one forgiveness of per capita to Supreme next year), but also will net the Council a check for $500.00 from Supreme. Active assistance is a must and only one Council per new Council established is eligible for the award(s). Participation must be verified by the host District Deputy and Diocese Membership Coordinator to be eligible. This will be another great year for the Florida Jurisdiction and I want to thank everyone for all of their hard work. I wish you all a very Blessed Easter. CHRISTOPHER E. KERNANState Deputy

Only having “through work”
insurance doesn’t workDo you know anyone whose life or career has
been drastically changed during these years of
economic downturn? It’s very likely that someone
in your immediate or extended family or group of
friends is facing financial uncertainty now. Maybe
there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse)
could lose your job or change employers.
Too many people have often relied on group
term life insurance as their only safety net. Often,
this insurance is an employee benefit provided at
low or no cost. The existence of this coverage
might convince someone that personally-owned
life insurance is not necessary.
Only having “through work” insurance can
leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group
life insurance policies are limited in amount,
which may be tied to salary or some other
benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and
this cap may be dangerously low when compared
to your family’s actual needs. In fact, without a
detailed needs analysis, any employer-provided
coverage will likely cause a shortfall at the
insured’s death.
In addition, the amount of group insurance
offered is almost always reduced, sometimes
dramatically, when you retire. You could one day
find yourself without coverage, and if your health
has changed (which it will as you age), you might
also find yourself unable to secure individual
protection. It will definitely be more expensive.
While group life insurance can help, it does
not replace the need for individually owned life
insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and
provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know
exactly where you stand.

Council Elections
The Grand Knight has formed an nominating committee made up of Brothers Chuck Crane, Steve McRobbie, and Manny Colone.
ElectionsSection 1. The annual election of officers shall take
place between May 15th and June 15th of each fraternal year. At least two months before the annual election, the
Grand Knight shall appoint a Nominating Committee of three who will prepare a slate of candidates for the elective council offices. One candidate will be presented for each elective position. The slate will be presented to the council not later than April’s business meeting.
Other nominations may be made from the floor and nominations may NOT be closed until the election meeting has convened and the members are ready to ballot.
DUTIES OF COUNCIL OFFICERSSince a more informed member will most likely
prove to be a more active and involved member, every new Knight should be introduced to council officers and Service Program directors as soon after his First Degree as possible, and a brief description of the office or position should be made at this time.
To be a council officer, a Knight must be a Third Degree member of the Order.
GRAND KNIGHTThe grand knight is responsible for the overall
welfare of the council. Elected annually by the council membership, the grand knight must provide thoughtful and inspired leadership to the council officers, the Service Program directors, chairmen and members of the council.
More specifically, his duties include: presiding over council meetings; acting as an ex officio member of all committees; appointing the membership and program
directors and working with them on the selection of Service Program activities chairmen and membership recruitment teams and retention chairmen; convening officers for a monthly meeting; appointing special committees not mandated by the laws of the council; overseeing the proper exemplification of the First Degree; and, finally, making sure that all reports and reporting forms required by the state or Supreme Council offices are submitted on time.
The grand knight also interacts with the financial secretary and treasurer to ensure the council is meeting its financial obligations to the Supreme and state councils, and others. The grand knight countersigns all orders drawn and signed by the financial secretary and all checks drawn and signed by the treasurer. He also reads the vouchers from the financial secretary of moneys paid to the treasurer and from the treasurer of moneys deposited in the bank. By these procedures, the grand knight monitors the performance of the financial secretary and treasurer, working with them to help the council meet its financial obligations.
The grand knight is a member of the Advisory Board charged with general supervision of a Columbian Squires circle sponsored by his council.
Finally, the grand knight, together with the deputy grand knight and trustees, is responsible for recommending a chaplain to the ordinary of the diocese for his appointment. He also appoints a lecturer.

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHTThe deputy grand knight is the
second in command in the local council. He is also elected annually, assists the grand knight in the operation of council affairs and is responsible for any duties assigned to him by the grand knight. In the absence of the grand knight, the deputy grand knight presides at council meetings and functions as the grand knight would. The deputy grand knight is a member of the Advisory Board charged with g e n e r a l s u p e r v i s i o n o f a C o l u m b i a n S q u i r e s c i r c l e sponsored by his council. It is suggested that the deputy grand knight and the board of trustees serve on the council’s retention committee.
CHANCELLORThe chancellor is elected
annually to serve the council in a variety of ways. Primarily, he assists the grand knight and deputy g rand knight in the execution of their duties and takes charge of the council during the incapacity or extended absence of both.
With the cooperation and support of the grand knight, the chancellor has the important duty of strengthening the members’ interest in council activities. It is recommended that the chancellor serve as the chairman of the council’s Admission Committee.
The chancellor is also a m e m b e r o f t h e c o u n c i l ’ s C o l u m b i a n S q u i r e s c i r c l e ceremonial team.

keeping a true record of all the a c t i o n s o f t h e c o u n c i l a n d maintains all correspondence of
the council. He should use the “Recorder’s Minute Book’’to record the minutes of all council meetings.
FINANCIAL SECRETARYThe financial secretary’s
important role is underscored by the fact that he is not elected by the membership but, his appointment – upon the recommendation of the grand knight and trustees – is approved by the supreme knight for a period of three years. His work has a direct effect on council members, his fellow officers, the state council and the Supreme Council.
B a s i c a l l y, t h e fi n a n c i a l secretary’s duties revolve around two key areas of council activities: financial records and membership records. The financial secretary collects and receives all moneys that come into the council from any source. He then turns that money over to the treasurer for deposit in the council account.
One main function of the financial secretary is to collect money, in the form of dues, from members. He sends out billing notices before the start of the bi l l ing period and ini t iates retention measures to prevent members from being suspended for nonpayment of dues.
T h e c o m p i l a t i o n o f membership records is another of the financial secretary’s important roles. He must ensure that new members sign the constitutional roll of membership at the time of their First Degree. The financial secretary also applies to the S u p re m e C o u n c i l o f fi c e f o r honorar y and honorar y l i fe membership cards for qualified members.
Besides these two major responsibilities, the financial secretary has several others. They include: handling supply orders for members with the Supreme Council Supply Department; filing the “Report of Officers’’ with the Supreme Council office; and re p o r t i n g a l l m e m b e r s h i p /insurance transactions to the Supreme Council office in a timely and correct manner.
The Supreme Council also m a k e s a v a i l a b l e p e r s o n a l computer software and associated reports and supplies to assist financial secretaries to automate record keeping/billing tasks. I n f o r m a t i o n o n h a r d w a r e re q u i re m e n t s a n d o rd e r i n g information for the software and supplies may be obtained by contacting the Supply Department or the Department of Membership Records.
TREASURERThe treasurer is the elected
official in charge of handling all council funds. He receives money from the financial secretary and issues a receipt for such. He is also responsible for depositing all money in the proper council accounts and providing a voucher or certificate of deposit to the grand knight for each transaction.

Final ly, the treasurer is responsible for keeping accurate accounts of the monies in the general expense fund of the council and the amount of money in any special funds established by the council. He must be able to provide up to-date records on these accounts to the grand knight, financial secretary or board of trustees.
LECTURERThe lecturer is appointed by
the g rand knight to provide s u i t a b l e e d u c a t i o n a l a n d entertaining programs under the “Good of the Order” section of the council meeting. The “Good of the Order” may include such items as speakers, presentations on special topics, e tc. The lecturer is responsible for presenting the “Good of the Order’’ section at council meetings. The lecturer must be knowledgeable of all aspects of council programming in order to provide members with informative and entertaining programs. If the meetings have been conducted in accordance with the ceremonials and the agenda, there will be ample time at each meeting for the lecturer to present a worthwhile program that will help build meeting attendance and p r o v i d e b e n e fi t s t o t h e membership that is present.

I N S I D E a n d O U T S I D E GUARDS
The guards attend the doors of the council chamber, checking on current membership cards before allowing entrance.
BOARD OF TRUSTEESThe board of trustees consists
of the grand knight and three members elected by the council. Trustees supervise all financial business of the council. They serve as auditors for the semiannual audits and oversee the work of the financial secretary and treasurer. The grand knight is the chairman of the board. It is suggested that the board of trustees and the deputy grand knight serve on the council’s retention committee.
Trustees are elected for terms of three years, two years and one year. At each regular election, the position of each trustee will be voted upon, and the current three and two year trustees move on to become two and one year trustees, respectively.
