Sustainable development
• Here
• Somewhere else in this world
• Now
• In the future
Keeping in account the consequences of our choices:
![Page 19: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Example: your fairtrade coffee
(prosperity/ profit): The coffeefarmer get a fair price for their coffeebeans.
(people): the coffeefarmers work in good and healthy conditions. Safety mesures have been taken.
(planet): Farmers get trained to cultivate more ecologically (less pesticides).
Sustainability = balance between the 3 P’s

Ecological footprint
Mesures the human demand on the earth’s ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate. It is expressed in amount of surface needed per person (globale hectare)
![Page 22: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

Belgium/ Brussels
• Fair planet-part per capita=
2,1 gha
•Belgium has only 1,1 gha
•Average footprint Belgian:
5,1 gha
![Page 24: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)

Russian footprint
![Page 26: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Russian Footprint
Russian footprint 2001 about 4.1 gha Recent figures internet 5.4 to 6 gha (5.1
belgium) Reasons of growth:
– Populations growth– An inefficient use of energy and raw materials– Large wastage in production– Bad insulation of houses
![Page 27: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
ECOLOGICAL DEBT = Some countries consume more than they can produce -> endebted to other countries (Belgium)
ECOLOGICAL RESERVE = some countries consume less than they can produce -> reserve (Russia: about 8gha per person)
Overshoot Day: In 2010, 21st august
Ecological debt and reserve
![Page 28: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
‘some have too much, many have too little’ There are…
-Social-Ecological -Economical
… problems, …Here and somewhere else in the world,
now and in the future
Because of this system
![Page 29: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
This is not sutainable!
![Page 30: April 2011 / GREEN](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081413/547afdfcb4af9f3a638b4688/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Consumption and happyness?
Bruto National Product =
index to mesure (economic) progress
A high BNP…
= a high ecological footprint!
= a happier person?
