From the PTA President...Time flies . April already??? Seems like yesterday we were talking about how many changes we are seeing this year at Patterson . The changes have just kept coming!

The budget crisis in the state and therefore in the district are weighing heavily on our minds . The district is anticipating cuts in our staff depending on what the politicians in Springfield do . Here is a link to the budget http://ipsdweb .ipsd .org/Subpage .aspx/Budget . This is no easy job . Luckily we have strong leadership in Dr . Birkett and the 204 School Board and hopefully all of this will occur with minimal impact on our kids . However, we do not want to be lax and figure it will all work out . We must stay informed and if we see something we don’t like, let the politicians know that we think they are wrong .

The IPPC, which is the Indian Prairie Parent Council is the governing body over 204’s PTAs . This year, the IPPC is updating its bylaws and a vote needs to be taken on these by all PTAs in 204 . The Patterson PTA will be voting on these changes at our May 11 meeting . If you would like to read through these to be more informed, please contact me at lisampearce@mac .com and I’ll send you a copy .

The PTA along with the school has had some issues with Chartwells . Since District 204 signed a contract with Chartwells and began using the National School Lunch program, one of the portions of the contract stated that any food served during lunch times when Chartwells is in the building must come from Chartwells . The PTA has been honoring this contract, even though this cost us more than running to Little Caesars and buying pizzas . In February, when we had our initial Brown Bagger Book Bunch party, we were under the assumption that the PTA would be billed for the lunch . We were billed for the lunch, but with the National School Lunch program, Chartwells also billed each child . They told us they would reimburse the 107 student accounts after receiving our payment . So far, we have not been reimbursed . We made a formal complaint to Chartwells and 204, and were asked to work through Mrs . Frost, even though this is a PTA event (and I’m sure Mrs . Frost has NOTHING else to do but worry about this) . We had a second round of BBBB lunches last week and paid our bill today . Hopefully, this will not happen again, since we gave the payment to Chartwells before the end of the month . I would encourage each and every parent to check your child’s lunch accounts and make sure you are being charged according to how often they get hot lunch and milk . If not, please contact Chartwells directly at (630)428-6564 and let them know how disappointed you are . Their service and quality are not what we think they should be and they should know about it .

Thanks to ALL who volunteered with the Brown Baggers Book Bunch this year, especially thank you to Sherry Needham for all of your hard work coordinating! To all the Parent Volun-teers, thanks for leading this fun book club for the kids!

Thanks to the Variety Show Committee Tammy Lilly, Eileen Boffa, and Kara Knutson! Great job on a successful show! There were an amazing number of Patterson Students who partici-pated and we are very proud of the job done

From the Principal...Dear Patterson Families,

It is hard to believe 4th quarter is here, especially since the weather has taken it’s time in getting warmer! Students and adults alike are anxious for warm weather and the fun out-door activities Spring brings . We have many exciting events happening at Patterson as we approach the end of the year as well . At the same time, our students are in the final stretch academically, working to master essential skills for their grade level . We greatly appreciate your continued support in helping students maintain an academic focus in this final quarter of the year .

We are pleased to let you know that Patterson Elementary School has been awarded the 2009 Academic Excellence Award by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) . This is the 4th consecutive year that we have received this pres-tigious award . Schools must meet the following criteria to obtain the award: (1) For PK-8 schools, 90% of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and math for at least three consecutive years and (2) the school must have made Adequate Yearly Progress 2009 . Congrat-ulations to our students, parents, and staff on earning this ISBE award! Our state certificate is displayed in the front hall near the main entrance .

The Patterson PTA and staff will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Thursday, April 22 from 9:30–10:30am for all our volunteers this year . It is our way of say-ing thank you for all you do, all year long, to make Patterson such a great place! We would especially like to recognize the 2009–2010 PTA Executive Board for their outstanding leadership this year . Thank you to Lisa Pearce, Donna Wid-mann, Cheryl Pastore, Colleen Garrison, Deb D’Ambrose, and Janet Juarez . We hope that you will be able to join us for this celebration .

Other exciting April events are: The PTA Meeting on Tuesday, April 13 at 9:30 in the MPR; Patterson Open House is April 8 from 6:30–8:00pm; Students will meet members of the Chi-cago Red Stars women’s soccer team during an assembly on our next Walk to School Day, April 9; Our Earth Day Celebra-tion will be Friday April 23; Our Book Fair returns the week of April 26; and our 1st grade Choir Concert will be Thursday April 29 . We hope to see you at one of these exciting spring events at Patterson!

Sincerely,Michele Frost, Principal

Open HouseA Patterson Open House will be held on Thursday, April 8 from 6:30–8:00pm . This is an informal evening where you can stop in any time between 6:30pm and 8:00pm, visit your child’s class, and tour other areas of the school . Students will enjoy showing you some of the fabu-lous things they’ve been doing at Patterson . Please note that this is not an evening for individual conferences with the teachers as so many people will be in and out . If you need to speak with your child’s teacher about an individual need or concern, please call them to make an appointment . Thank-you and we hope to see you there!

2010-2011 School Year RegistrationAccurate student numbers for the upcoming school year are more important this year than ever before . ~ Dr . Seuss

For those of you who don’t know what Brown Baggers Book Bunch is all about, let me tell what the students have been doing for the past few months . They have made friends with a pig named Mercy Watson; learned all about freckle juice; met a music loving mouse; hunted for ghosts; were absorbed by the antics of a boy named Fudge; made friends with a dog named Winn-Dixie; pondered the real identity of William Shakespeare while searching for the Murphy diamond; learned what it’s like to live underground and searched for the meaning of life .

All this fun would not have been possible without the help of so many wonderful volunteers! Thank you to: Julie Vellen-der, Maleeha Rahman, Gina Gramarosso, Lori Groves, Juli-ana Hepburn, Steve Schwinn, Holly Morlock , Laura Garvey, Jen Wileman, Adriana Burgos, Maureen Stack, Patty Wei-ger, Jill Rowe, Sue Dillon, Lisa Afshari, Andrea Rebmann, Cara Knutson, Maila Rambissoon, Donna Widman, Alicia Napoli, Nancy Wolford, and Kelly Bitto .

You made this program a huge success! The support of the teachers and administration is also greatly appreciated . Thank you for letting us use your classrooms, and helping us to stay organized!

environmental ClubMarch 23, marked the end of the first year of the Environ-mental Club at Patterson . A very special “Thank you” to Mrs. Kane for teaching the students and to Stacie Gannon for all of her hard work in organizing the classes and activities . The club was attended by 30 third and fourth grade students . Every Tuesday from 3:30–4:30 the students learned about a new topic and then performed a topic related activity . The topics discussed in class included: School Recycling, Com-post & Vermicompost, Energy, Renewable Energy, Global Climate Change, Forestry, Student Environmental Aware-ness & Communication, and Water Conservation .

The final class focused on a school water audit . The students measured water consumption within the school from daily student activities—flushing toilets, washing hands, drinking water, cleaning, and lunchroom water consumption . The students then used their math skills to calculate aver-ages based on all the measurements and calculated water consumption for all 730 students at Patterson on a daily, monthly, and annual average . Below are the club’s findings from March 16, 2010 .

PATTERSON WATER CONSUMPTION AUDIT

Student Water Uses Gallons/day Gallons/school year

Drinking Fountain 46 8,213Water Bottles for Lunch 91 16,425Flushing Urinals 1,074 193,321Flushing Toilets 3,906 703,081Washing Hands 411 73,913Janitorial Cleaning/Rinsing 30 5,400

With over 1 million gallons used by our Patterson students per school year, we then discussed water conservation activities at school and at home . At school the student rec-ognized the importance of bringing a reusable water bottle and only replacing the water that they would drink each day . Students also became more aware of washing their hands for extended periods and shutting the water off while they soaped their hands and immediately following rinsing . Wa-ter conservation techniques for the students to take home included: shutting off the water while brushing their teeth, notifying parents of faucet or pipe leaks, shutting off the garden hose or sprinkler immediately after use, not running the shower or bath for more than 1 minute until hot or warm water starts, and being mindful of ground pollution which is the single largest source of water pollution .

As always it was a joy to work with the students in the environmental club and to help foster a passion for environ-mental stewardship and to conserve our earthly resources such that generations in the future will have the same, if not better, quality of life that we enjoy today .

If you are interested in the Garden Club, fill out the form below and turnin into your teacher by March 26, 2010. We are limited to the size of the club,so get those forms in early.

We look forward to seeing you in the SPRING GARDEN CLUB!In the event of rain your child will go home at the regular dismissal time. Please have arrangements made if this should occur.

Bicycle Safety ReminderAs spring slowly begins, more and more students will be riding bicycles to school . The rules for riding bikes to Patterson are important . If it has been awhile since you had a “family talk” about bike safety, now is a good time to do so .

FOR BIKE RIDERS WHO TRAVEL TO AND FROM SCHOOL ALONG EITHER THE EAST OR WEST SIDE OF LAWRENCE DRIVE:] All bikers must walk their bikes on school grounds and along Lawrence until they cross Grommon . (On the way to school, children must dismount bikes before they cross Grommon and walk their bikes all the way to the bike racks behind Patterson .)FOR BIKE RIDERS WHO TRAVEL TO AND FROM SCHOOL ALONG ORWELL:] All bike riders must walk their bikes on school grounds across Lawrence until they cross Branford . (On the way to school, children must dismount bikes before they cross Branford and walk their bikes all the way to the bike racks behind Patterson .)ALL BIKE RIDERS:] Bike riders will be dismissed from the classrooms at 3:25 . This will allow extra time for bike riders to vacate the area surrounding the school and lessen congestion for walkers . Walkers will be dismissed at 3:35 .] We strongly recommend that students wear helmets when bicycling to school or at any time .] All bikers should stay on sidewalks, at all times and follow the crossing guards instructions.

Helmet Check!]Your helmet should fit well and feel comfortable.]It should sit snugly on the top of your head, about one inch above your eyebrows.]If your helmet hits the bridge of your nose when you pull it forward from back to front, it’s too loose.]If your forehead shows when you push it from front to back, it’s also too loose and the straps need to be tightened.]The “V” of the straps that go around your ears should come just below the earlobes.

The PTA Alternative Funding committee would like to offer Patterson families the opportunity to purchase The Summer Bridge Activities™ workbook series that bridges the educational gap during Summer. The PTA is offering these workbooks in conjunction with The Chalkboard. The cost of each workbook is $13.95 with $3.00 from each book going back to the PTA. Please make checks payable to Patterson PTA and return no later than 4/14. The workbooks will be distributed to students toward the end of the school year. Each book is divided into three sections by incentive contract calendars to help motivate your child to complete their daily exercises. The first part of the book (2/3) provides heavy review of the grade your child is leaving; and the last part of the book (1/3) is a preview of the next grade to prepare your child for the upcoming year. Each book contains a parent introduction that offers helpful hints on using the Summer Bridge Activities™ program as well as information on the importance of summer learning. The curriculum-based activities include the following: * Phonics (lower grades) * Reading Comprehension and Writing * Mathematics * Science, Social Studies, Maps & Globes (intermediate & upper grades) * Suggested Summertime Reading (based on Accelerated Reader) We appreciate your support and are confident that Patterson Elementary’s children will benefit from this wonderful educational opportunity. Please be advised that these books do not follow district curriculum but are merely a means of helping your child bridge the Summer learning gap. Complete the order form attached and return it with your payment to your child’s homeroom teacher on or before 4/14 in an envelope marked “Patterson PTA - Summer Bridge”. Questions about this program may be directed to Nicole Munn at [email protected].
