Biodegradable Grass Clipping Bags

The City of Houston has established April 5, 2010 as the startup date for the collec-tion of yard trimmings in compostable bags. City of Houston Solid Waste Man-agement Department crews will only pick up bagged yard trimmings placed at the curb in City-approved compostable bags. Yard trimmings placed in the gar-bage cart, or in any other type of container or bag will not be collected. The City says we can “let it lay or take it away.” The free alternative to bagging leaves and lawn clippings is by using a mulching mower for “grasscycling” or making your own personal compost pile. Work done by lawn care profession-als can be left on the lawn or should be taken away by the contractor. Approved compostable bags are available at numerous retailers throughout the city. Historic Glenbrook Valley

Cookbook

Many years ago Glenbrook Valley published a cookbook. Some of you may still have a copy. It will be a HUGE undertaking, but the His-toric Team thinks a "Second Edi-tion" to coincide with our historic designation. Please send your favorite recipes to [email protected], or mail them to Recipes, P.O. Box 262164, Houston, TX 77207-2164.

Box 262164, Houston, TX 77207-2164.

Yard of the

Month Selection Begins in May

The first "Yard of the Month" award will be presented for May. Judging will be the last week in April. In our continuing effort to keep newsletter information cur-rent, it is necessary to select the next yard of the month during the last week of the preceding month. What are the judges looking for? Neatly trimmed and mowed yards; flower beds free of weeds; con-trasting color; uniqueness; balance and symmetry; and overall ap-pearance. NO ARTIFICIAL PLANTS OR FLOWERS, please! There are 5 award areas: North-east, Northwest, Southwest I, Southwest II, and Southeast. Each of theses areas will have one yard designated as "Yard of the Month" with a sign placed in the yard. All homes in Glenbrook Valley are eligible to win the coveted "Yard of the Month." The compe-tition is greater on some streets

that others. YOM is the reward for your hard work and pride in your home and community! Winners will have the "Yard of the Month" sign placed in their yards during their winning month. They will also receive a certificate.

Historic Update.... So Near...........

Our minimum goal is 650 peti-tions signed. Right now we have collected 510 signed petitions. Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel? If you need a petition, please download one from the Glenbrookvalley.org web site. Click Civic Club; at the bottom - document repository; select "Historic Designation;" English; click "Historic Designation Peti-tion." Print and complete the peti-tion and mail it to: Historic Peti-

tion; P. O. Box 262164; Houston, TX 77207-2164. We are asking that those of you who have already signed the peti-tion check with your neighbors to see if they are on the "team," and encourage them to sign. If you rent or lease the home you're living in, please pass the petition on to your property owner. There are three qualifying areas that must be met to qualify for the historic designation. Naturally the signed petition requirement is a monumental task to be accom-plished. 51% of property owners must sign. Second, 51% of the homes must be in the mid-century modern or atomic ranch design. Third, 51% of the homes in the neighborhood must be over 50 years old. Steps two and three are

Hobby Fest The "Glenbrook Valley Mod Squad...in Color," Don Dorcey, Shannon Mc Nair, Mike Morse, Horary Team Member James Rodriguez, and Jamie Oyler cooked up a fine pot of chili for the Hobby Fest Chili Cook-off. We know ours was the best, but the judge's "tasters" must have been off. The plans are already simmering for next years booth!

are solid. It's the petition signings that need a boost.

A historic designation for Glen-brook Valley will in no way in-crease your property taxes. The his-toric designation will affect altera-tions made to the exterior of your property. Interior alterations are to your personal taste. Deed restric-tions already do that and will con-tinue to do so.

During April and May we will be knocking on the doors of neighbors that have not yet signed the petition. First there will be a door hanger and a petition left to let you know when we will be back to collect it. If it isn't convenient for you to visit with us for a little while, please leave your signed petition for us to pick up!

Farm

Animals

City ordinances, as well as deed restrictions in all 13 sections of Glenbrook Valley, prohibit farm animals on the property. That in-cludes chickens, pigs, goats, ducks, etc. If you know of an ad-dress that is “on the farm,” please call Animal Control, 311, Broad-way Storefront, or a Civic Club Board member to report it.
