Chair’s Corner The much needed rain was great, and maybe we will have green grass soon. I know we missed a few days of golf,

but our ponds really need that water. Hopefully the weather will stay warm for a while.

I want to update you on the locker room renovation projects. We finally received a bid and it was quite a bit

higher than we expected. John Cochran with The Design Group, who planned the space and did the drawings you

see in the Club House, is bringing in more contractors to bid the job. The TTCC sub-committee will also meet

with John Cochran and work on ways to cut the price. One example is that we may decide to have two sinks in

each restroom instead of three. Please don’t misunderstand me, we are going to do this project. We must keep the

project at $130,000 and so we are not ready to start at this time. My hope is that the project will be started before

the next newsletter goes to print.

Margaritas with the membership was a great time and spirits were high! Blake signed up several members at the

margaritas event in March! I think the rain kept some people at home and then there were those of us who were

under the weather, so to speak. We have a multitude of activities planned for us each month. I know there is

something for everyone and it is always more fun with more participation, so check your newsletter and enjoy our

Club.

By now you should have received the information about the 2009 Board of Governors Election. You have the

opportunity to nominate someone or yourself for this Board. Nominees must be full golf members in good

standing for one year or more and must have served or chaired a TTCC committee for at least one year. If you

want to have a voice in the activities and improvements at the Club, nominate someone. April 15 the ballots will

be mailed to each of us, so please take the time to vote and return the ballot to the Club.

I’ve had a couple of members ask me to talk about litter on the course. It only takes a few minutes from each of

us to make our course much prettier. Please use the boxes on the tee box to dispose of broken tees. One other

issue is cigarette & cigar butts, it has been suggested to me that if a person would carry a cup in his/her cart with a

little sand in it that you could dispose of cigarette & cigar butts in this cup instead of all over the course. Thanks

in advance for any help in these areas.

If we are going to have the funds we need to complete projects, like the sand traps on the front nine, we need to

help Blake build our membership by giving him names of friends, relatives, neighbors, or business associates for

him to contact about membership. Remember we are a club that is “Membership by Referral Only.” Blake is

working hard and he needs our help, so think of someone to refer today. K26

As always I hope to see you at the Club!

Ambassador Committee Update Margaritas with the Membership March 12th was very well attended with new faces and guests. The Ambassadors goal is to get as many members and guests as possible to attend the Margarita night. It was fun for everyone to look for only three stickers to be eligible to win a prize. It is always interesting to see who attends this function. It appears we are seeing members that have heard about Margarita night and now understand the evening is designed for members to bring friends and quests together in an informal setting to get better acquainted and show off the friendliness of our members and staff. Yes, the bottom line is getting new people interested in becoming members, it is also a way to keep our members working together and staying interested in the club. The fun activities are also designed to give you, the member, an informal opportunity to go up to people you may not know and start the conversation by asking for the sticker you need for the drawing. The sticker hunt only takes a few minutes and qualifies you for the drawing. Each Margarita Night we draw gifts valued at more than $150.00.

Thank you all for your participation in March Margarita Night and we hope to see you April 9th for more fun and surprises. Thanks also to the great staff and all the Ambassadors for their time and effort, especially Dave Fredrikson running the shuttle cart, he was so cold he ran to the margarita machine to get warm. No; not to drink the margaritas, yes; to warm his back side and hands with the hot air the machine was exhausting. Now don’t you feel bad thinking he was running just to drink the Margaritas. (OK he did that as well)

Thorntree Book Club by Kathi Ackermann & Doris Whitley

Virtually all John Grisham’s novels are page turners, and The Appeal is no exception. Ranging from the personal and environmental effects of corporate greed and irresponsibility to the possible breach of impartiality of elected state Supreme Court justices, The Appeal seems very timely, given the current financial, corporate, and political mismanagement issues and scandals we now face. Grisham always presents moral and ethical issues to his readers in stories that involve characters we can identify and empathize with in many ways, along with characters we can all dislike. These issues and the story itself provided the book club members topics for an enjoyable discussion. For April’s selection, we travel from Grisham’s Mississippi to Greg Mortenson’s setting in remote regions of Pakistan, where his goal is to build schools in villages where no schools have ever existed. Like his mountain climbing expeditions, these goals are beset with pitfalls, missteps, and magnificent successes.

We agreed to switch the March and April books, so here is the updated list of books and dates:

April 2-Kathi Ackermann-host Three Cups of Tea (non-fiction) by Greg

Mortenson & David O. Relin May 7-Pat Shipley-host

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (fiction) by Stieg Larsson

Either Kathi, Doris, or the host will email directions and reminders (along with a reminder to RSVP) before each meeting, so please make sure that if we do not have you on our email list (below) that you send your information to Doris ([email protected]) or Kathi ([email protected]). Following is a list of those who have indicated they want to receive emails regarding the TTCC book club: Kathi Ackermann, Gayle Bailey, Sherry Boles, Edna Bolinger, Linda Cadigan, Annette Curtis, Paula Easter, Meredith Fernandez, LuClare Hamby, Jamie Head, Joyce Libbey, Judy Mayes, Gail Monte, Leilani Salisbury, Sharon Schuller, Eileen Sexton, Pat Shipley, Donna Smith, Carol Surplus, Doris Whitley. If you want to be removed from the list or added to it, please let Doris and Kathi know. We hope to see at our April 2nd meeting at Kathi Ackermann’s house!

TWGA News Our 2009 season started off with opening scrambles for our play days. Please watch for results of our opening days for CTWGA, SLGA, Tri-Club and WTGA in the next newsletter. R806

These are the scheduled events for April: Play days: Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday Central Texas Women’s Golf Association (CTWGA): April 9 Suburban Ladies Golf Association (SLGA): April 21 Tri-Club: April 15 Women’s Texas Golf Association (WTGA): April 14-16 Dallas Women’s Golf Association (DWGA): April 6 and 21 and April 28-30 If you would like to join us out on the course, please contact Membership Chair, Kunnie Briggs, at 972-641-8301 or [email protected].

Thorntree Golf Standards In order for Thorntree CC to meet conditions of playability desired by the

membership. The following guidelines are being set forth based on direct

member feedback. They are the minimum standards to be seen on the course daily except when otherwise stated here. These standards are intended to

build pride and really make you proud to be a member.

Greens: All 18 Greens plus (2) practice greens.

The greens at Thorntree CC were designed to be challenging yet penal. Since the greens are heavily sloped it is imperative that green speeds be maintained

fast but not unplayable fast. Our greens were designed to be kept at

Stimpmeter speeds no less than 8.5 feet and no more that 11 feet. Ideal green speeds will be between 9 and 10.5 on a daily basis.

Therefore, greens will be checked on a regular basis with a true and accurate

Stimpmeter to verify speeds of 8.5 feet or greater. Testing shall occur after

7am and before 12 noon at least 2x’s on days of member play per week. The

flattest greens, which are the Upper practice green and #1 green, will be used

as benchmarks.

Further, since major club tournaments are the highlight of the year, the greens

will be maintained to a Stimpmeter speed of 9.5 to 11 feet each day of

tournament play.

Tees: This includes all teeing grounds on the course plus the practice tee.

Each tee box shall be kept completely covered with grass appropriate for that

tee and the season of the year. The tees shall not reach a height in excess of

5/8 inch between mowing. The only exception to this shall be during over

seeding, heavy maintenance periods or periods of severe weather.

Divots shall be kept repaired and there shall be minimal foreign grass or

weeds in the teeing area.

Fairways: Each fairway should be solidly covered in Bermuda grass with

minimum amounts of weeds. On all member play days the fairways should

be kept to provide players with good lies. Weather permitting fairways

should be mowed at least 2 member play days per week during times of year

when there is grass growth.

Sand Bunkers: Sand bunkers shall be raked daily. They will be maintained

with TXI golf sand at a depth of at least 4 inches in the floors and 2 inches on

the faces.

Rough: The roughs will have two cuts. The first cut will be adjacent to the

fairway that will be 4 to 6 feet in width at a height of ½” above fairway cut.

This cut will also include at least a 4 to 6 foot loop around bunkers and

sloping portion of all green surrounds. The second cut will be no less that 1”

and shall be mowed at least 1 time per week weather permitting.

Practice Area: The practice area will be solidly grassed, free of weeds, and

kept in similar condition as the main golf course. The entire tee will be

mowed at least 1 time per week with all divots and debris blown off and

picked up. The practice bunker will be raked daily and maintained the same

as on course bunkers.

Course Set-Up: Setting up the course for play each day is the responsibility

of the superintendent with advice from the golf professional when

appropriate. Tee Markers will be moved daily based on play and

environmental conditions. Placement of markers should logically relate to the

placement of hole locations and the environmental conditions present.

Hole locations will be changed daily during times of turf growth and as

needed dependent on play during off-season play. Each green is setup to have

4 quadrants to locate holes. Each quadrant should be used as marked on hole

location map. Hole locations should not be set on severely sloped areas and

should be in accordance with current hole placement system.

It may be necessary from time to time in the best interests of the golf course

to require that golf carts stay away from damaged or stressed areas, or remain

on paths at all times.

I want to thank you all for being members at Thorntree Country Club and

hope that these standards as stated will help make your experiences they best

they can be.

Thorntree Tennis www.thorntreecctennis.com

Spring is in full swing at the tennis center!

First I would like to say welcome to all of the new tennis members. Secondly thank you to all of our tennis ambassadors. We appreciate your hard work. Spring break camp was a success. We have introduced new adult, junior and children's programs. Our team tennis participation has reached a new level. If you are interested in participating on a men's or women's team please e-mail me or call the pro-shop.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you all to reserve a court before you come to play. This can be done by calling the pro shop or by emailing me. [email protected]. This will ensure that you have a court to play on when you arrive at the tennis center.
