11:00am - 12:00pmWeights, Weights and more Weightswith KC ChavdaStatistics show that over 50% of RVs exceed one of the weights of their Class A, 5th wheel, Travel Trailer or Tow Vehicle. Today’s RVs are much heavier, longer and have minimum safety tolerance to keep cost down. Yes, the trucks are getting beefier but are they keeping up? Exceeding weights causes unsafe driving conditions that can jeopardize your safety on the road. It is considered a traffic offence and police are clamping down. How many times have you heard “No problem your truck can pull that (heavy) trailer or 5th wheel when you go shopping”. Is that really true? This seminar will inform you of what weights are critical, why, how to stay safe and legal. This is a must seminar for new buyers, owners of new RVs, older tow vehicles (gas or diesel), or safety conscious RVers.

Four-year old, Alexa Middelaer was killed by an impaired drive as she was standing at the roadside feeding a horse in May 2008. For her parents, Laurel and Michael, Alexa’s death was a catalyst for change. Her parents chose to channel their grief into reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roads and highways of our communities. They began a fundraising campaign to purchase a state-of-the-art Mobile Road Safety Unit (MRSU), known as “Alexa’s Bus,” designed to provide all police forces in BC a platform for alcohol and drug-impaired driving investigations.

Alexa’s story inspired a turning point in B.C.’s history. It was the Middelaer family who challenged the RCMP, municipal police officers, and the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General of British Columbia

to reduce the number of deaths caused by alcohol and drug impaired driving resulting in the new the Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP), which went into effect in September 2010.The Province set a goal at that time to reduce drinking and driving fatalities by 35% by the end of 2013 in honour of Alexa. That goal was far surpassed, with an unprecedented 52% fewer deaths, three years after the IRP program was launched. As of June 30, 2014, the IRP program has contributed to an estimated 227 lives saved and a 54% reduction in alcohol-related fatalities.

Come join the Alexa’s Bus Mobile Road Safety Unit in front of the PTCC during the 2016 BC Interior RV Show to take a tour and learn about the program.
