That date is subject to change as the coronavirus pandemic evolves. Social distancing practices (3-6 feet of space between participants) should be observed for any event inside church spaces. Televised or online celebrations of the Mass and other religious programming are available for use of the faithful during this time. The Sacrament of Penance should remain available according to need, but public Penance Services are not to be conducted. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick should also remain available for true emergencies. Hospitals and nursing homes may be on lock-down and priests are advised to check on their status beforehand. Finally avoid crowded areas, observe careful hygiene, keep appropriate distances outside the home and if feeling sick, stay at home. I ask that all of the faithful remember the elderly and other persons at risk in their families and communities, and reach out to them by phone to see if help is needed. Dear friends in Christ,

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Easter, which Saint John Paul designated Divine Mercy Sunday, as revealed by Jesus to Saint Faustina Kowlaska. The Diary of Saint Faustina makes for great spiritual reading. Today is the great Sunday of mercy showered down throughout the whole world. During these days of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are in need of God’s special grace, favor and love. Mercy is love’s second name, as John Paul once wrote. Just as Jesus gave his life freely on the cross, and even from the Cross forgave the repentant sinner, so too our good Lord is ready to forgive those who bear their hearts to him.

We are self-isolating, sticking to the basics, not travelling but spending much more time at home. On my occasional bike rides, I have seen how much Spring cleaning and gardening has been going on. Our time at home has meant lots of beautification projects, more cooking and perhaps baking. If anyone has a new-found talent for cutting hair while keeping six feet away, let me know!

While our houses and yards get much attention, are we taking the time to beautify our hearts, minds and souls? These are harder to clean, order and purge. Ultimately, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is the best method of cleansing our hearts. I am available by appointment and with appropriate distance. In the meantime, however, we can put our lives in order and ensure that nothing is present that does not aid us on the path to holiness.

In the Gospel today we encounter the disciples locked in the upper room. They have returned to the cenaculum, the place of the Last Supper. There they huddle together... kinda self-quarantined. And they are afraid! Has any fear been plaguing you during these days, despite the comforts of familiar surroundings?

And Jesus steps right into the midst of their fear, panic and doubt with the gift of PEACE. Thrice Jesus repeats: “Peace be with you,” the familiar greeting. Seems to me that they needed to hear his words; nay, they needed to receive into their hearts the gift he is offering, but which has not yet penetrated their hearts: PEACE.

Once received, the gift of peace becomes a mission for his followers, a mission of forgiveness. On the first day of the week, that is Sunday, the men who failed to be faithful to Christ in his greatest hour of need, receive the gift of peace and the power to forgive sin. Christ forgives them and associates their forgiveness with the mission to forgive others: “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are

retained.” Now they have to go out into the world and bring that forgiveness to others. They cannot stay in the upper room. They cannot let fear rule them.

Saint Peter, writing years after this powerful moment, reminds his community that “Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” we receive, “an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.” At the same time, while we rejoice, “[we] may have to suffer through various trials.” These words echo the logic that trials are meant for our growth, that the process may purify us of what does not belong to Him.

It reminds us of a the Proverb that the author from Hebrews quotes, “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges,” (Prov 3:12; Heb 12:6). We need to look no further than the Cross that the innocent Son endured for the salvation of the world. And each cross in our lives is an invitation to grow and mature, that the dross of our lives may be removed. Oftentimes it seems that those capable of making an offering are asked to suffer and endure more than their “fair share,” just like our divine Lord. Perhaps just like Christ, their hearts are more capable of making a pleasing offering to our Father.

During this time when nothing is normal, or when we are getting used to a “new normal,” what new thing is the Lord accomplishing in our lives? To what is God inviting us? I am a firm believer that God is ceaselessly at work. How is He at work in our lives and hearts during these days?

To have the courage to leave the security of what is familiar, our “upper rooms” - I offer again the beautiful prayer of Blessed Charles de Foucauld:

Prayer of Abandonment

Father, I abandon myself into your hands / do with me what you will. / Whatever you may do, I thank you: / I am ready for all, I accept all./ Let only your will be done in me, / and in all your creatures. / I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul: / I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, / for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, / to surrender myself into your hands without reserve, / and with boundless confidence, / for you are my Father.

May God bless you now and always!

Stewardship: You Guys Rock! Thank you so much for your dedication to our Parish! Our regular weekly collection total had been hovering between $9-10,000 (first, second, and Givelify.)

On March 22nd First Collection: $1,557.00 Givelify: $1,227.00 Total:$2,784.00

On March 29th First Collection: $4,750.00 Givelify: $2,363.00 Total:$7,113.00

On April 5th First Collection: $7,100.00 Givelify: $2,548.00 Total:$9,648.00

On April 12th Easter Collection: $11,192.00 Givelify: $4,455.00 Total:$$15,647

That is simply awesome. You have been doing awesome! Our Givelify figures just about doubled. And lots of folks have been dropping their envelopes in the mail slot, or sending them through snail mail.

This has been a HUGE adjustment and a HUGE suffering for you. We appreciate that many in our parish are probably without work, or reduced hours. We also deeply appreciate your sacrificial giving and feel so grateful. Your pastor feels so grateful for all you are doing! I would HUG you… if not for social distancing ;-)

Many are donating for multiple weeks, or monthly. That is great. It is hard right now to predict a new normal, but we are so grateful for your sacrificial giving!

Wellness Calls during COVID19 Pandemic This week some volunteers began calling a bunch of our older parishioners, just to check in. Since older folks are more likely to suffer more severely from COVID-19, we are calling to make sure you have what you need to practice social distancing. We want to know how things are going for you. I have heard wonderful heart-warming accounts of good chats and deep appreciation. This effort will go on over the course of several weeks, and we hope to check in again!

If we can run an errand for you, we would like to help! If YOU would like to be part of the group who volunteers to run errands, get in contact with Deacon Ron Meyers: [email protected] or call 609.234.0600.

If you think we may have a bad phone number, please call us, and help us update our database. Thank you so much!

And in general, now is the time to look in on our neighbors and to be of service to them, to love them, to see Jesus in them. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” These wellness calls seek to do that, but anyone reading can reach out as well!

Let’s stay connected: FlockNote, etc. We have joined a service called FlockNote. It helps us keep in contact with you. FlockNote works with email and cell phone numbers. To join, simply text OLPHMS (*all caps*) to 84576 to sign up.

A new YouTube channel: “Father Joel Wilson” offers videos, homilies, reflections and updates. Just trying to stay connected!

We have been doing our best on Facebook too.

Please take a minute and share with us your updated contact info, so that we can stay connected! Email Theresa: [email protected] or call 856.667.8850 ext 210.

OLPH Pastoral Council

This year we reinstituted a Pastoral Council for our parish.

Currently there are six members: Rosemary Acker, Tom Asher,

Donna Marie Clancy, Mike Garofalo, Dawn Morning and

Coni Tartaglia.

The Pastoral Council serves as a consultative body to our pastor.

As a body, the council is charged with prayerfully discerning

parish needs, setting pastoral priorities, and empowering

people to participate in the mission of Our Lady of Perpetual

Help Parish. They help the pastor vision for the future and offer

valuable advice and connection to the community. Right now,

we are focusing on "parish engagement."

We hope to add 3 new members to the council this Spring/

Summer. If you are interested in being considered for the

council, please submit a letter of interest and credentials to our

Chairperson, Donna Marie Clancy: [email protected].

Express why you would be a good fit for the council and share

some of your vision for parish life here at OLPH. Thanks!

A CALL TO PRAYER

An Act of Spiritual Communion is proposed for the faithful who are temporarily unable to receive the Eucharist: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I de-sire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally come at least spirit-ually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were al-ready there and unite myself wholly to You. Never per-mit me to be separated from You. Amen.” For a list of streamed or recorded Masses available online, or television stations airing the Sunday Mass, go to dioceseoftrenton.org/coronavirus As we all face what has become a grave and growing health risk, it is important for all the Catholic faithful to “persevere in hardship and keep praying regularly (Romans 12:12).” As Bishop of the Diocese of Tren-ton, I invite all the Catholic faithful to join with me in prayer: O Mary, loving Mother, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust our-selves to you, who at the Cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide, so that as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Be present to all those suffering from coronavirus and to those who care for them: families, friends, neigh-bors, doctors, nurses, staff, government officials, pas-tors, priests and all who seek to do God’s will. Bring comfort and calm to the elderly, to those at risk and to all who are afraid. Be for us all a beacon of hope, lighting our path once more to the heart of your be-loved Son, the Divine Healer and Health of the Sick.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Dear OLPH Community,

On Monday, our teachers and students will return from Easter break to continue remote learning.

This will last through at least Friday, May 15. At that time, Governor Murphy will reevaluate this

timeline and advise as to whether it needs further extension or if schools will reopen so the final

weeks of the year may be held in our school building. This instruction will continue as before with

teachers emailing and sending links for virtual learning sessions.

Recently our school family shared video clips and photos, giving everyone a chance to see their

friends, teachers, and other staff members. If you have not seen the video that Miss Tyler created,

entitled Say Hi! Project , I hope you take the time to watch and enjoy it. Many thanks to our school

parents who recorded their children. You are the key to remote learning being a success for your

children.

If there is anything you need to make navigating remote learning more manageable for your family,

please do not hesitate to reach out to the teachers and/or me for assistance. I have been able to lend

Chromebooks to many students and will continue this if you need one. Those with more than one

child are welcome to borrow one for each child. I have a no-contact delivery system in place.

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of OLPH School I thank you for your many prayers and

good wishes as we continue through these challenging times. We also continue to keep you in our

prayers each morning and afternoon during our school prayers and announcements.

Stay home, stay safe, stay healthy!

God Bless,

Cynthia Smith
