Ministry in Action...

PAGE 3 Tercer Domingo de Pascua BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST

Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament—the Chris-tian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today’s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are avail-able to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the right-eous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ “expiation for our sins” (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace” and urges them to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47).

Question of the Week

First Reading — The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus (Acts 3:13-15, 17-19). Psalm — Lord, let your face shine on us (Psalm 4). Second Reading — The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his commandments (1 John 2:1-5a). Gospel — Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you” (Luke 24:35-48). Question for Children: Name some times when you know Jesus is with you. Question for Adults: When have you had an "Aha" moment, when you suddenly realized that God was with you?

Monday: Acts 6:8-15; Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29 Tuesday: Acts 7:51 — 8:1a; Ps 31:3cd-4, 6, 7b, 8a, 17, 21ab; Jn 6:30-35 Wednesday: Acts 8:1b-8; Ps 66:1-3a, 4-7a; Jn 6:35-40 Thursday: Acts 8:26-40; Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20; Jn 6:44-51 Friday: Acts 9:1-20; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 6:52-59 Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Ps 116:12-17; Jn 6:60-69 Sunday: Acts 4:8-12; Ps 118:1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, 28, 29; 1 Jn 3:1-2; Jn 10:11-18

WHITE SPECIAL MASS PRAYER ENVELOPE

There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authority in a congrega-tion, and others have a “rule” that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of independent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven independ-ent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called “Kentucky Dominicans,” began as a frontier community in 1822. Other communities have European roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sisters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ’s dying and ris-ing in an inspiring way. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Tradition

If you are interested in joining the Altar Society, there will be a meeting on April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Office. At this time, we are actively seek-ing volunteers to prepare for the bread, wine, linens, vestments, candles, flowers and anything else needed for the altar during masses. For further questions or more information, please call Dennis Adame (562) 889-9322.

Third Sunday of Easter The grand and dramatic story of God comes into focus in today’s readings. The passages from Acts and from the Gospel of Luke describe how Jesus’ disciples began to understand how Jesus fits into the larger narrative of God, Israel, humanity, and all of creation. In the Gospel, Jesus interprets the scriptures for his followers. He shows how his seemingly shameful death was actually the fulfillment of God’s promises. Jesus shows how his life, death, and resurrection are the surprising turning point of the scrip-ture story. We, the Church today, find ourselves in the middle of this story. We first look back, to recall God’s overflowing and steadfast love, beginning from Creation, through Christ, until today. We then look forward to the fulfillment, already launched by Jesus, of the Reign of God. With this perspective, we play our part in the drama, joining God to bring God’s work to completion.

Healing Mass

Father Louis Lester Niez is a member of the religious community of the Disciples of Mary. Currently assigned as the Associate Pastor of St. Linus Church, Father has served 23 years in the priestly ministry as Formator of Seminarians at different levels of forma-tion. He was a member of the Council of the Disciples of Mary as well as a Spiritual Director to high school youth. He has facilitated retreats and recollections as well as presiding at healing masses and church missions for different groups, parishes and institutions both in the Philippines and in the United States. He was involved with the Healing Missionar-ies of the Holy Spirit, a community that promotes healing of the family tree through the Eucharist, so that forgiveness is effected to promote healing of generational family curses and sins. Fr. Les firmly believes that the foundation of his vocation is primarily his relationship between him and God; a deep, intimate, profound living and unceasing union with God in response to Him who loved us first. He said `` I be-lieve that everything I do and say is for God alone.``His per-sonal motto:``Una sa lahat, bago ang lahat, higit sa lahat, sa kabila ng lahat, si Lord pa rin, siya nawa.`` To translate, ``First of all, before anything, more than everything, in spite of all and after all's over, it is God still and Him still.``

THE SURPRISE MESSIAH After the crucifixion of Jesus, his disciples were

in despair. Not only had they seen their master’s horrible death, their own lives were now at risk, for the crucifixion suggested to them that Jesus was not the awaited Messiah after all. The Messiah had been envisioned as somehow coming in power, liberating Israel from foreign domina-tion and signaling God’s long-awaited return to dwell again with Israel. The Crucifixion suggested to them the possibility of God’s rejection of Jesus, or Jesus’ failure to achieve God’s purposes.

This is partly why the disciples were amazed when Jesus appeared. God had vindicated Jesus by raising him. The Resurrection revealed that God’s promises were actually fulfilled, precisely through this death. Through the cross, God had indeed liberated the people from sin and death. God had truly returned, in Jesus and then later in the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit. The do-minion of sin and death had been broken. The Resurrec-tion was the first display of the new kingdom of God, in Jesus.

Modeling gratitude in your home can help your child learn what to value and be grateful for, and learn to avoid the things that are not valuable or worthy of their time and inter-est. THEMED BASKET

DONATIONS

We are in need of your collaboration to help collect great auction items to help fundraise at our Ohana 2018 Luau event this May.

Here are some examples of items we have found that guests enjoy bidding on: Tablets or reading devices (such as iPad Pro, Kindle Fire HD, Nook), designer handbags, fine or artisan jewelry, weekend getaway, perfume, chil-dren’s items, sporting tickets or memorabilia, fine wine, restaurant gift cards, behind-the-scenes and unique ex-periences. Also, other items we would love to auction off are your special talents: Do you have a band that you can offer for a party? Do you cook and can provide a dinner for two, three or four? Do you knit or sew and can donate items to be auctioned? Lastly, if you would like to make a monetary donation to help put together a basket, please submit your donation in an envelope to the parish office labeled “Luau Basket.” If you have any question, please call Esther Moreno (562) 412-4461
