HAWKINS - ARROWs

ARROW stands for Anti-Resonant Reflective Optical Waveguide. These structures are unique because they allow for the guiding of light in waveguides with air or liquid cores. The purpose of this project is the fabrication and study of ARROW structures and the construction of photonic devices built using ARROWs. Project sponsored by NIH, NSF, and DARPA.

Project relies on: Advanced Lithography Development, Metal and Dielectric Deposition, Chemical Etching of Core Materials, Research in Micro-fluidic Handling and Packaging, Scanning Electron Microscopy

HAWKINS – MICRO FILTERS

Project relies on: Advanced Lithography Development, Metal and Dielectric Deposition, Chemical Etching, RIE Etching, packaging

Microfilters are made on silicon substrates and consist of microfluidic channels in which very precise pores are etched. These pores would be used to remove a variety of bioparticles from a complex fluid mixture. One application would be the removal of bacteria and viruses from blood.

MAZZEO - DIELECTRIC SPECTROSCOPY

Dielectric spectroscopy of liquid solutions probes the electrical properties of dispersed particles such as proteins. This approach is unique because it reveals the electrical structure of molecules and can track intermolecular interactions over time. Specifically, this research will be looking at RF measurement of proteins in microchannels for bulk sensing and specific analytes. Project sponsored by Agilent Technologies Foundation.

Project relies on: Thermal Stabilization, Electromagnetic Modeling, Instrument Control and Communication, Signal Processing, Liquid Handling and Measurement

MAZZEO – MOLECULAR DYNAMICS

Molecular dynamics probes the molecular movements of atoms by computing the forces applied to each atom over a femtosecond time scale. This relies on the supercomputer to measure interactions over short timescales on the order of nanoseconds. This project will be exploring molecular absorption onto silicon to compute the resulting stresses, which are critical parameters for microcantilever sensing.

MAZZEO – BRIDGE INSPECTION

Corrosion is a major problem in aging infrastructure. New techniques are being developed to measure structural defects. In this project we will be building on our original impedance spectroscopy work to now focus on the acoustic properties of bridge delaminations using an impact-echo technique.

BANGERTER – MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

Quantitative Sodium MRIThis project seeks to improve the measurement of sodium concentrations with MRI through pulse sequence innovations, better coils, and sophisticated post-processing techniques. Applications include quantitative assessment of cartilage health and characterization of tumors.

Improved MRI of Breast CancerIn this project, we are developing new sodium imaging techniques, improved accelerated proton imaging techniques, and phased-array coil designs for imaging of breast cancer tumors in vivo.

Diffusion Tensor MRI with Non-Linear High-Performance GradientsThis project seeks to improve diffusion tensor imaging sensitivity and SNR through the use of non-linear high-performance gradient inserts available at the University of Utah.

All projects rely on advanced signal/statistical processing models, noise analysis, image acquisition modeling, image processing, and familiarity with MRI scanning techniques.

Research Responsibility: Develop new acoustic method and apparatus for analyzing impact-echo of deicers on concrete.

1) Develop cart apparatus that can automatically record acoustic data from auger-driven dispenser.

2) Develop MATLAB analysis of spectral information to align acoustic data with impacts on surfaces.

3) Deploy working system on different concrete surfaces to validate the technique.

Research Responsibility: Finish work on correlating the surface roughness of stainless steel electrodes on electrode polarization. Create molecular dynamics models of absorption on silicon dioxide surfaces for stress estimation.

1) Develop models in CHARMM for BSA on silicon surfaces.2) Develop the stress models to relate the surface absorption energy to curved

surfaces.3) Relate these parameters to actual deflections observed by the Nordin Group.
