Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter!

Today, throughout the world, the Church echoes once more the astonishing message of the first disciples: “Jesus is risen!” – “He is truly risen, as he said!”In every age, the Risen Shepherd tirelessly seeks us, his brothers and sisters, in all corners of this world. With the marks of the passion – the wounds of his merciful love – he draws each of us to follow him on his way, the way of life. The Risen Shepherd invites us to join him as he goes in search of all those lost in loneliness and marginalization. He comes to meet them through our initiatives that treat all people with respect and kindness, and helping all to hear his voice, an unforgettable voice, a voice calling all people back to friendship with God.In the complex and often dramatic situations of today’s world, may the Risen Lord guide the steps of all those who work for justice and peace. May he grant the leaders the courage needed to make right choices and care for those most vulnerable and in need.It is our prayer that with one voice, in every part of the world, and in all the corners of our community we proclaim the great message: “The Lord is truly risen, as he said!” May Jesus, who vanquished the darkness of sin and death, grant peace to our days here in Summit and beyond.

Happy Easter!-Fr Bob and the staff of St Teresa of Avila Church

ST TERESA ADULT CHOIRJoining the adult choir promises to be an enriching experience of fun and fellowship with other singers who share a love of sacred choral music. The choir welcomes new voices throughout the choral season, from the Sunday after Labor Day weekend to the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend. During these months the choir sings each Sunday at the 10:30AM mass, during the Christmas season, and for the Triduum and Easter liturgies. Their repertoire includes: sacred traditional and contemporary liturgical pieces, and a variety of anthem-style meditation pieces. Rehearsals are each Thursday at 7:30PM in the church sacristy. Previous singing experience is helpful, but not required.

ST TERESA CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE *NEW* Our Music Ministry is looking to expand our offering of ensembles with a new group of singers and instrumentalists that will rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:30PM and sing at the Sunday 12:00PM or 5:30PM masses each week (Depending on group availability). Participants who enjoying singing both as a group and as soloists are encouraged to considering joining this ensemble. Instrumentalists who play guitar, percussion, reeds, or strings, are all welcome and can make a contribution to this group at their own pace. The style of music will be a mix of classic and modern Catholic contemporary music, lead by piano accompaniment. Please contact our Music Director to learn more about how you can get involved and set up an informal audition.

CANTORSCantors are an essential part of the liturgy. Trained singers who serve as a cantor should have good pitch, basic music reading skills, and an ability to help lead the congregation in song. Each cantor is scheduled based on availability and often requires preparation aside from the regular choir rehearsals. Singers who feel they may be eligible to participate in this important part of the music ministry are encouraged to contact the Music Director to set up an audition of prepared music and required sight-reading.

CHILDREN'S MUSIC MINISTRY Participation in this exciting, fun and educational program will enable children to grow in their faith, expand their musical horizons and share the gift of song with the parish. Children in grades 1 through 6 are invited to join. The children sing each Sunday at the 9:30AM mass in Memorial Hall.

TEEN MUSIC MINISTRY *NEW* This new ministry is meant to act as a bridge between our children’s choir and adult choir. The group is open to all students in grades 7 through 12 and sings at the 12:00PM mass once a month. Please contact the Assistant Director of Music, Mrs Kristen Hoyt at [email protected] to learn more about our youth music ministries.

MUSIC MINISTRY – Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the ministry of music empowers worship and facilitates prayer in the liturgical celebration. As an integral part of our parish life, this ministry is active with many talented volunteers and professional musicians who are committed to creating a solemn prayer environment and joyous worship experience through music. Encompassing a variety of styles from the rich tradition of hymnody to the songs of contemporary composers, there is something offered for every worshiper. As fully active and conscious participants, the congregation is entrusted with an important responsibility to bring their voices and God-given gifts to the entire worshiping assembly. Whether you sing or play an instrument, we invite you to contact our Director of Liturgy and Music - Matthew Still, to learn how you can get involved and share your talents with the community. Lift Up Your Voice!

What are you reading? Would you take a moment and share with your fellow parishioners what spiritual books you are reading and writing a little infomercial about it? It’s good for us to share these things as we walk and grow on the journey of faith together.

Saint Teresa of Avila Parish

With a parish of over 3,700 families, we desire to build up our team of Lectors to perform this important liturgical ministry. Surely, given people’s busy schedules, one cannot read every weekend, but scheduled from time to time, one can grow spiritually in this beautiful ministry. Will you consider serving? Below are some “thoughts behind the ministry” that may answer some questions, quell some doubts and perhaps even inspire you to serve. Thank you for your kind consideration! But you are a ’chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Pt. 2:9).

A THEOLOGY OF LAY LITURGICAL MINISTRYAll liturgical ministers are, first and foremost, members of the Body of Christ. Through their baptism they are the "holy people and royal priesthood" whose right and privilege it is to participate in the ministry of Christ. How the lay faithful exercise this ministry in the world varies, but the fullest and most fundamental expression of it has always been "conscious, active and fruitful participation in the mystery of the eucharist" (General Instruction of The Roman Missal - GIRM, Introduction #5).Since the celebration of the Eucharist is the "action of the whole Church" (GIRM, Introduction #5), everyone in the assembly has "an individual right and duty to contribute their participation" (GIRM #58). Some of the faithful are called to serve God’s people in a more particular way through one of the many liturgical ministries that have flourished in the Church since the Second Vatican Council. This diversity of roles, functions and ministries enriches our celebrations and assists us in our prayer. Serving in one of these ministries is both an honor and a responsibility, and those who commit to it need nurturing and support. Proclaiming the Word of God has always been a fundamental part of Christian liturgy. The earliest Christians, firmly rooted in the traditions of the Jewish temple, incorporated the stories of God’s mighty and saving deeds into their own worship rituals. They knew, as we do today, that God’s word is powerful and active, “achieving the end for which (God) sent it” (Is. 55:11). God’s word continues to reach the ears of the weary through the voice of the lector for “when the Scriptures are read in Church, God himself is speaking to his people” (GIRM #9).

Since “by tradition the reading of Scripture is a ministerial, not a presidential function” (GIRM #34), it properly belongs to ministers other than the presiding priest. This includes deacons and lay people who “are truly qualified and carefully prepared” (GIRM #101). Effective lectors require a degree of competence in public speaking, as well as training, practice and on-going formation. Above all, they must be “doers of the word, not hearers only” (Jas. 1:22), with a mature and lively faith that is evident from the way they live. The ministry is not for everyone and determining who would make an effective lector calls for careful discernment. But blessed are they who accept the challenges of this ministry, whose well-trained tongues still speak to the weary on God’s behalf.

PREPARATIONThose who exercise a liturgical ministry are expected to develop their ministerial skills by taking advantage of the training and formation opportunities offered by the parish or the Archdiocese. In addition, they have a serious responsibility to prepare in a more immediate way for the readings they are scheduled to proclaim, “so that the faithful will develop a warm and lively love for Sacred Scripture from listening to the reading of the sacred texts” (GIRM #101).

DURING THE LITURGYSince during the liturgy "all should do only, but all of, those parts that belong to them in virtue of their place within the people of God" (GIRM #5), lectors should not perform other ministries during the same celebration at which they are reading. Lectors proclaim each reading exactly as contained in the Lectionary, without changes or additions of any kind. Eye contact is essential to effective proclamation, as is an unhurried pace and clear

and correct pronunciation. When the passage is completed, pause again and make eye contact before announcing “The Word of the Lord”. The lector returns to his/her seat in silence. After the second reading the lector removes the Lectionary from the ambo to allow placement of The Book of the Gospels. This should be done reverently and simply. If no suitable place has been provided, the Lectionary may be placed on the credence table as the lector returns to his/her seat following the reading.

THE SACRED BOOKSDuring the Mass, readings are proclaimed from The Book of the Gospels and the Lectionary. There has always been a distinction between these books, with The Book of the Gospels being accorded greater respect than any other books of readings. It is very desirable that parish communities possess a beautifully designed Book of the Gospels, separate from any other book of readings” (NL 33). The Book of the Gospels should be treated with the utmost care and respect. It is the book that is carried in procession each Sunday and from which the priest or deacon proclaims the Gospel. The Lectionary contains the readings for each Sunday of the liturgical year arranged in a three year cycle. It is the book from which the lector proclaims.“Because of the dignity of the word of God” (NL 37), the Lectionary is treated with great reverence and respect, but is never carried in procession.Because the books from which we proclaim are symbols of Christ’s presence, missalettes and paper copies are not worthy of liturgical use. When the scriptures are read in parts, for example during the reading of the Passion, each lector should receive a copy of the reading in a suitable binder or cover.

Parish Ministries

Bereavement Group We have upcoming meetings on the following dates: April 10, April 17, and April 24. The meetings are on Tuesdays from 7-9 in the Sacristy. No one should grieve alone. Being with others who are experiencing a similar pain and loss can be helpful. Participants in a Support Group are in mourning and their ways of dealing with the process can be helpful and encouraging. If you, or someone you know, is grieving now, no matter how long ago the loss occurred, you might find deeper peace through the “Journey”. Sometimes it is harder to talk with a family member because they are also in pain. If you cannot attend the entire series, drop in when you can. For more information, contact Ann Marasco: 908-230-2396 or Susan Angelo: 908-967-2396 .

Loaves and Fishes Good Morning Summit! Did you know that one in six of Summit’s students faces food insecurity and 22% of Summit’s families are working poor? We need your help to make sure all Summit families have access to fresh, local produce and food items! Please take a moment to learn about how YOU can get involved and help our community thrive! In attempts to assist local families, SDI initiated The Give It Fresh Today (GIFT) table, which accepts donations of food items and monies to help provide access to nutrient dense food to Summit’s most vulnerable. These donated food items are then dispersed via weekly food pantry settings by Loaves and Fishes (St Teresa of Avila food pantry) and GRACE (Giving and Receiving Assistance for our Communities Essentials). SHIP (Summit Helping It’s People) also uses the food while serving breakfast and lunch on weekdays and dinner on weekends to Summit’s neediest.

On March 3rd, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad responded to a call at St Teresa of Avila Church for a fall victim. Sr Frances Marie, sacristan at the church, fell down the side steps of the church, injuring herself. Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad administered top-notch care in rescuing Sr Frances Marie. In appreciation for that call, as well as all that the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad does for the community, Monsignor Robert Meyer, (affectionately known as Fr Bob) offered his appreciation with a donation to the Squad.

Pictured here are Fr Bob of St Teresa of Avila Church; Denise Barber, EMT; Beverly Brown, Crew Chief; and John Buscaino, President of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad.
