A Monthly Publication of the Houston Association of Health Underwriters
HAHU HERALD
Please join us on April 16, 2013 for our monthly
luncheon, where we will have Alan Bush, a local attorney who
specializes in labor and employment law, speak to us about
non-competes.
Alan Bush counsels business leaders. He focuses on labor and
employment law, often litigating disputes against employees. Alan also
helps businesses with HR policies. Super Lawyers recently named Alan
to its Rising Stars list.
Alan has spoken and published for many business organizations.
For example, the Houston CPA Society named him Speaker of the Year
2010-2011. The Gulf Coast Symposium and HR Southwest have both
tapped Alan as a speaker. And he has spoken for The Woodlands and
Montgomery County Bar Associations. Finally ,Alan is a guest columnist
for The Houston Business Journal and Texas Lawyer.
NEW DAY FOR NON-COMPETES:
SECURE YOUR INVESTMENT IN HUMAN CAPITAL You invest in human capital. You share the ball—employees learn
your secret playbook and leverage your customer goodwill. Both
investments, thanks to Marsh v. Cook, can now justify roping an
employee into a reasonable non-compete. We'll talk it out. And we'll
discuss how to avoid winding up on the wrong end of a non-compete
enforcement action when you hire from a competitor.

You would think that with everything that is going on with the
implementation of healthcare reform that I would not have any trouble writing
an article each month but, guess what, here I am struggling again.
I think that the most pressing issue that is on my mind right now, and I hope is on your
minds too, is the growth and perpetuation of this chapter for years to come. I found out the week
before last that HAHU is no longer the largest chapter in the universe. Philadelphia has moved
into that position. My first reaction was that I have really let you, the members, down. For some
reason I have been unable to lead our board and membership in a manner that would promote the
true value that NAHU, TAHU, and HAHU bring to our members. I can think of numerous reasons
for this as the carriers, TPA’s, and brokers are all restructuring their business module so that they
feel they can survive whatever the final implementation of the ACA looks like. Some of that
restructuring requires cutbacks. However, I choose not to use those reasons as I feel that right
now is when we should all work together and learn from each other’s strong points. It is our
responsibility to make each other aware of any informational opportunities that will enhance our
ability to serve our clients in a manner that will bring value to that relationship. One of the strong
points of being a member of this chapter is the communication between members regarding ideas
that one member feels would benefit another member, whether that idea is from a carrier, TPA,
GA, or another broker. There is strength in numbers. Those of you that make the trip to Day at
the Capitol in Austin or CAP Conference in D. C. each year actually see that working as you visit
with your elected officials. Now is the time to work together with our current membership so as
to grow it and strengthen it for the future of our industry. Personally, without the support of our
carrier members, the TPA’s and GA’s that are members, and my fellow brokers that are members, I
would not feel that I would be able to advise my clients on how they will be affected by the ACA
and how best to structure their benefits for the changing times.
So, I am asking each of you to let me know how HAHU can help you and your business. If
you truly feel that our association brings value to you, then ask a fellow broker to become a
member. Get involved in our chapter and learn more about what it can do for you. Don’t forget
that we are in need of members to take an active role in our board for this next year. If you feel
that you are ready to try to help our industry and our members please contact either myself, Jeff
Bacot, or Terrell Rogers. I can be reached at 713-785-3290 or [email protected]. I
welcome your thoughts and your suggestions on what we can do to enhance the value of your
HAHU membership.
HAHU Annual Golf Tournament
Mark your Calendars, HAHU members,
for our Annual Golf Tournament to be held on April 22, 2013 (registration
starts at 11am). The tournament is being held at Sweetwater Country
Club, and this year we are going to play the other course. Be on the
lookout for registration and sponsor forms in the near future. Last year
was a huge success for our scholarship funds, HAHU, and all that it
supports on the local, state and national levels. In addition to our
sponsors and players, we are also looking for volunteers to help with
running the event.
We are planning another silent auction and would appreciate
any donations. Please contact Crystal Hoffman at 281-491-6565
([email protected]) or Dirk Blankenship at 713-582-6140
([email protected]) for sponsorships and details. We look
forward to seeing you there and we thank you for your support of our
industry and the Houston Association of Health Underwriters.

2013-2014 HAHU Board By
Terrell Rogers, Immediate Past President
Healthcare Reform is upon us as we continue through this year with our attention set on January1,2014. Our Association's board year starts on July 1st, 2013 and ends on June 30th, 2014. This year we have several positions open and no contested. Therefore, there will be no ballots this year; the board will be approved by acclimation at our May luncheon. However we do have several positions yet unfilled. Please reach out to anyone who is a member of our Association in good stand-ing. Please consider filling one of the positions below. We need you on our board and would like you to set aside any reservations you may have about serving. Many people are servants in their respective professions, church or civic organiza-tion. Here are three great quotes for you to consider. We hope one of them will resonate with you while encouraging you to serve this term. - “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ―
Mahatma Gandhi.
- “Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a
heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” ― Martin Luther King, Jr.
- “Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.” ― Marian Wright Edelman. The following Chairs/Positions are:

TAHU Convention
By
Lonnie Klene, Past President
The TAHU convention is being hosted by the Ft. Worth
association this year. Ft. Worth AHU and the TAHU convention com-
mittee have put together a great line-up of speakers and CE, including our own Queen of
Long Term Care, Honey Leveen. If you are in need of your Ethics CE, don't worry, they've
included that as well as CE's on disability, fee based compensation and value based
strategies.
The activities kick off early Thursday morning, May 2, and continue through Friday
evening. Of course, you don't want to miss the Hollis Roberson Dinner Thursday
evening. It's always fun to see our colleagues all spiffed up and recognized for their hard
work and dedication.
Friday's keynote speakers are Dave Anderson, "Learn to Lead,” and Don Cooper,
"The Foundation of Consultive Benefit Plans."
Don't forget about the exhibit hall. Where else can you visit with hundreds of your
industry colleagues in one afternoon? Not to mention the great door prize
opportunities!
