24. TEACHING AND LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

23aii. Student Learning Journey

Page 12: Approved PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION(UNDERGRADUATE) 1. … · BSc Diploma of Higher Education Certificate of Higher Education Health & Social Care Studies Health & Social Care Studies

The Midwifery programme has a mandatory practice learning component and the achievement of professional proficiencies where the practice to theory ratio of each programme is required to be no less than 50 per cent practice and no less than 40 per cent theory as advocated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2009;19). The Department have opted for 50:50 ratios of theory and practice. The Department implement a strategic approach to teaching and learning and promote a shared understanding of this approach among staff, students and stakeholders. Feedback from the External Examiner, module evaluations, Staff Student Consultative Fora (SSCF), Programme Boards and placement/stakeholder, inform and develop the curriculum. The team integrate a range of teaching methods; examples include the use of role play, practical scenario simulation, quizzes and debates. The various methods employed are documented in the module specifications and students are exposed to a balance of teaching and learning styles including: - Lectures; - Seminars; - Tutorials; - Group discussions; - Student presentations; - Simulated learning using a variety of high and low fidelity equipment; - Supervised practice and practice based learning; - Virtual learning environment; - Professional Development Portfolio; - Critical enquiry and critical reflection. The Department utilise specific subject expertise within the University, such as operating department and anaesthetists, mental health, safeguarding and specialist midwives to enrich and enhance teaching and learning. To provide enhanced skills acquisition simulation with low and high fidelity, fully interactive simulators, such as Noelle (maternal) and Hal (neonatal) provides students with an opportunity to experience both physiological and obstetric emergency management in a supportive environment. The Department have expanded its scope with collaborative skills sessions involving midwifery, operating department practitioners and paramedics. The sessions provide currency, credibility and a clear link between theory and practice. In addition, knowledge and understanding of inter-professional working is enhanced, which is a key factor for employment. To support student skill development, theory is underpinned by Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) methodology, which is accepted throughout the UK in managing emergencies in the maternal and obstetric field. The standards from ALSO are embedded in the midwifery curriculum enhancing the student experience. ALSO members are revalidated every three years to ensure they remain current. One member of the Department is an experienced ALSO instructor and has facilitated taught ALSO sessions internationally. Another member has achieved instructor status and is in the process of validation to teach at the level of instructor. In addition, the team have a wealth of experience underpinned by ALSO training. The training permits a standardised approach for educating student midwives about maternal and newborn emergencies. The highly developed skill level required during maternal and neonatal emergencies is demonstrated and assessed in clinical practice. In addition, the skill base enhances employability for the student as a newly qualified midwife. Assessment strategy Assessment throughout the programme meets academic and professional requirements to ensure that students are 'fit for purpose, fit for practice'. Assessment strategies encompass a wide range of assessment methodologies to aid learning and bridge theory with practice. All assessment processes are carried out in line with the University Academic Regulations and subject benchmarks. Students will be assessed formatively and summatively through written essays, examination and seminar presentations, OSCEs and grading in practice. Since 2009, the NMC required student midwives to be graded in practice, which is the only healthcare professional programme in the UK to undertake this assessment. Grading in practice is unique to the midwifery profession and the Department are cognisant of the potential for grade inflation. In the proposed programme, the curriculum development team have driven to address this issue through the integration of theoretical and practical modules and aggregating the summative grading of clinical competencies with summative theoretical assessments. The integration of theoretical andpractical modules will also support transferability of skills. Additionally, the rubric used by mentors in practice to grade students has been strengthened, which will eliminate the potential for mentor/student bias. Practice placements are situated in a variety of community and hospital maternity services in order that students experience a culturally diverse socio-economic group of clients. Clinical skills within midwifery education have increased in priority over recent years. Following a national review of fitness for practice at the point of registration by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 2008, the introduction of the Essential Skills Clusters (ESC) was introduced.

25. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Within each module, a range of formative exercises have been included to build upon the learning experience and provide students with ongoing and constructive feedback. This will be in all theoretical and practical modules to enable students to identify strengths and develop their academic and clinical competencies.
