INTRODUCTION

• Indonesia is one of EFL countries.• Vocabulary takes important part of

learning English.• 3rd grade is the right stage to gain

more complex vocabulary.• Word family list is the device to

validate the vocabulary items.

• Banhart (2011) “vocabulary is the daily words that used by people in general in a particular language and the list of word that defined alphabetically or like a dictionary”

• Ur (1991) “…the words we teach in the foreign language”

• According to Paul Nation (2008), vocabulary is divided into four levels based on its frequency and range. High frequency words Academic words Technical words Low frequency words

• Nation’s Fourteen 1000 word family lists consist of high and low frequency words

• Bauer & Nation (1993) proposed “Word family lists consist of baseword and all its derived and inflected forms...”

• Bastable & Dart (2003) said “… 6-11 years old students are in their middle and late childhood…”

• “Children at this developmental level are motivated to learn because of their natural curiosity and their desire to understand more about themselves…” (Whitener et al., 1998)
